This is one of the reasons that EMS is a stepping stone job, and not a career. The public has no idea what goes on in the EMS community, and just want public saftey in general, and yes we are public saftey in the minds of the average citizen. Until there is a change in the trend of how the average citizen sees EMS there will be no change. Even with two year degree Paramedics private companies will pay for the cheapest labor they can get away with. Also fast programs like this + Volunteers = stepping stone JOB. I personaly don't think this trend will end anytime soon in my working years.

But like I said a LOT of it was move-ups and waiting to offload patients.

Funny you should mention that, I believe the compitetion between fire and privte make for excelent service, since niether wnat to be taken over by the other.

I am a medical professional. Opinions of we are safety is just one of our problems in EMS. R/r 911 But that's just it, currently we are not a profession, and it is not an opinion if it is true about being apart of safety, at least I can state this and be right in my part of the country. I do beleive EMS is always evolving, an example is the NREMT new catagories for providers, but it will be interesting to see how the nation grasp that change. Yes EMSA was a cook book style system.

Thank you for being sincere I really do appreciate it, not trying to start a war, but I did work in Tulsa for a while, and there wasn't much difference between Oklahoma and Cali except in $$$, I mean we still had protocols to follow written and directed by an MD. I also enjoy the medic aspect of my job, but there is only so much you can do out of hospital, especialy with short transport times, and as far as the FD's keeping EMS back I say it's the volly's who give there service away for free are doing just that, and the privates for being so cheap with all equipment and personel.

Not sure why Cali FD's suck, medics are medics everywhere at least in the US anyways. I am just stating the facts as to where I live this is a stepping stone job, not sure that it is going to change.

What are you talking about?, I guess all of the southern Cali FD's are selfish. I tell you that my family thank me for my dedication to my career, but I got to say this is a stepping stone job at least in the part of the country I live in.

This job is so easy, you can learn it fast and easy while working. this is why we are paid the small wages as opposed to other evidince based healthcare workers.

I don't get the anti fire take over here. I work as a Firefighter/paramedic and don't see what the big deal is.

Thanx for the heads I will search the fourms, but the original thread was posted as a financial issue and thats what I was getting at. As far as all these high education programs that's cool and all but I don't think people are going to go to school all that time just to find out that in some parts of the country people are still going to give there service away for free. I live work in southern Cali and unless Iam wrong or can't see into the future EMS will always be part of the fire service, so with that it is very well a stepping stone job when you can't make a living in the private world.

well we all suck to some degree I mean we just follow the protocol of an MD. but I thought MAST, and the city if Kansas City are trying a budget thing.

yes and no, LA County FD is not hurting financially and is a great model for county/city EMS, they do not charge for there services directly, and allow the private ambulance companies to bill the patient.

usually the first in engine company officer will take comand, until a battallion cheif or duty cheif shows up and relieves them. you can still give orders as a company officer, but mostly you deligate without getting to your hands dirty.

not sure what you are asking. are you asking who's in charge at the scene of an MVA? regarding the IC system.

sounds interesting, they should run it like LA County, and all MAST has to do is hire bls personnel for minium wage.

I guess there are some parts of the country were this is some concern, as for me I work for an FD in southern cali so we get PD or SO on every call along with a type 1 engine and ambulance on every call, so I guess the tax payers spot me for my safety, haven't gotten into any real dangerous situations yet. Don't need a gun either.
