  1. APAP, Guaifenex DM, Sudafed, sick slip.....................God I wish I could get those words out of my head!
  2. Interesting......... Most medics I work with, myself included, would much rather be over here. The pay is better, care is actually promoted through use of worldwide evidence based medicine vs. the opinion of one medical director, the perceived view of professionalism is higher, and the multi-cultural opportunities are endless. I wouldn't trade it for the world and I have no interest in returning to an ambulance or helicopter in the states. Plus with the way the dollar is trading, foreign pay is actually a decent investment in itself....................But to each their own.......... 8)
  3. Personally, I would have beat him over the head with his handcuffs. I know this goon, an absolute moron..............
  4. Nope. You will work as an EMT-B which the certification obtained from the 68W course. Depending on your assignment, you may or may not operate with an advanced scope. The benefit will be the additional education that will allow you to assess and think at a more proficient level. That benefit is priceless........
  5. uh huh...................... :sleepy4: Keep it up wiseguy! lol
  6. Wow, it is turning into a small world after all................ AK, e-mail me back, let me know when you will be in town. Dinner is on me..........
  7. Great information!! However IPhone users will come to find that these methods rarely work. The inability to remove the battery and the circuitry on board are root causes of irreversible death for these products. You would figure that Apple would be smarter than this, but I guess its yet another way for them to make more money by selling more phones!
  8. There are organizational operating policies in place for a reason. Like them or not, someone smarter and with more forethought than you and I has established them for the best interests of all parties involved. I can tell you first hand that freelancing will result in chaos. The level is directly proportionate to the level of the incident at hand. During Hurricane Rita, a few dumba$$e$ decided to do their own thing in the Beaumont area. The result was not evacuating the largest hospital in East Texas until after the storm blew in. There was no command and control from local EMS agencies or the hospital administration. It took an outside EMS agency to come in with their tactical team to restore order and complete the mission. Many lost their jobs after that one and some were criminally prosecuted....................... So to sum it up, follow your established procedures. If your agency says no to unneeded whacker lights, then don't buy them or use them. On duty EMS has a mission, let them do it. If they want your help, let them come to you. Otherwise you are more of a hinderance than help in many cases. Playing adrenaline junkie on your off time is just plain dumb, especially if you are knowingly violating your departments policy. Personally, I would have fired your a$$.
  9. It kinda reminds me of being with a woman when your drunk. At first she looks great, but after you sober up, you want to get rid of her! I have the first generation and I see distinct advantages, namely price over the contract. My monthly service fee is $10 less and that includes texting, the G3 doesn't. They also have not fixed some fundemental flaws such as not being able to text MMS messages, you have to e-mail them which is a pain in the ass and unusable by some. Plus for all who are enticed by the cheaper purchase price, don't be fooled, the $199 is only if you are not currently in a contract. If you are, they can charge you the full $399 price. Given the pros and cons, I have no reason to upgrade. Not to mention that in less than a week, I won't need it for anything else other than an IPod. JMHO.............
  10. Another interesting clip on Yahoo......................... http://cosmos.bcst.yahoo.com/up/player/pop...13&src=news
  11. Ignorance is not knowing, stupidity is a repeat offender................... You acknowledge the hazards and continue to exhibit a hazardous attitude. Fortunately for us when you get plowed over on the road for not adhering to commonly accepted safety practices (and yes the practice is more common than your assumption of what other idiots say), someone who is safety conscious can take your place. Yea for us.................. Sorry, but your post exhibits the Websters definition of stupid! [-X For your viewing pleasure........................ http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YAdAjtbpM6k...feature=related http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JVNn2WqE3eo...feature=related
  12. O.K. not necessarily a LODD, but yesterday we lost a legend........................ Dr. Michael DeBakey was the pioneer of modern Cardiovascular Surgery with notable inventions such as the LVAD and several revascularization devices currently used in PTCA procedures. He was also one of the few surgeons in the OR in his 90's. A remarkable man and surgeon, he will be missed .............................. http://www.chron.com/disp/story.mpl/front/5884576.html
  13. Floor it, the faster you hit, the more likely it is to clear the ambulance . Seriously though, many organizations have policies in place to not swerve to hit or miss wildlife. Hit it, kill it, but don't get others involved. In short, night - night Bambi!
  14. Glad you made it out there o.k. 8) It was great meeting and getting to know you before you left. So far, so good for me, if everything stays on track, I'm looking at about 3-4 weeks. I'll let you know when and where once I know for sure. Keep it safe bro!
  15. - Fire Dept. for extrication - Maintain inline stabilization if possible during extrication - Apply spinal motion restriction - Oxygen if needed - IV NS Lock, fluid to titrate BP above 80 systolic if needed - Consideration for chemical sedation and RSI if pt. becomes uncontrollable - Transport to trauma center with consideration of air resources if significant time savings is present - Grab some starbucks and get ready for the next call................. 8)
  16. Every item, every shift................. Anything less is inexcusable!
  17. The Fire Department. Tools by definition! Never had the need for one, especially not for a saw feature. What are you cutting off, pt. extremities?!? And yes, AK, you are a weirdo...............
  18. Touche................. Call me crazy but my thought is along the lines of this................ If I am toned to a call, then I respond. If not, I don't. Buffing or jumping calls dosen't put any extra pennies in my pocket and if I'm not on duty then I am not covered under any insurance policy. Not worth the risk or my time. There is an on duty EMS crew for a reason, I have faith that they are more than capable to handle or request the appropriate resourses to do so. If I am on duty and I am the closest unit, then I will respond, otherwise another unit can respond. Since there is no competition in our district (as it should be), there is no need for any "F&B vs. Unity" type tactics....................
  19. Maybe I'm not following you here as I haven't seen your other bunker gear thread, but that jacket still looks too damn hot to wear. I see no reason why it would be needed. Gloves, goggles, and a reflective vest if needed. Anything else is too much. Maybe we are spoiled as most of our firefighters are also EMT's at the minimum. They can hold c-spine in the vehicle, control bleeding, or bag a patient. No other care should be required until the patient is extricated. Since the "cowboy intubation" that is performed inside the car, upside down, is now frowned upon, there isn't a need for much else. Please correct me if I am wrong........................
  20. Everyone should be wearing reflective vests, thats a given. But, I for one will refuse to wear any sort of bunker gear on an MVC for several reasons................ 1. They're just not needed. If extrication is required, then the firemonkeys can cut up the car to their hearts content, remove the patient, and then bring him/her to me. 2. Bunker gear tells the public that I am a firefighter, which I am not. I am the medical professional on scene, not a hose puller. My uniform clearly identifies me as such and there is no need to alter it. 3. It is already over 100 degrees outside and I am sweating my ass off, why on earth would I want to add more clothing that is not needed?!?!?
  21. I think Dust has touched on most of the subject, but I want to add a couple of things. 1. HFD sucks! Period! They are the worst EMS agency I have ever come in contact with. Most do not want to be medics as Dust pointed out, they just want their premium pay for being a Medic. Fire side isn't bad, but definately don't go there with any belief that your presence as a Paramedic will remotely be of any service. 2. If you still do to HFD, please be aware that you CANNOT work while you are in the academy. Take a job, they will terminate you. It's written in their conditional job offer paperwork. 3. There are much better places to go, most with better quality of life and better pay. North Houston also has some of the best Volunteer Fire Departments in the nation. Most also have paid duty crews. There aren't too many fulltime Fire / EMS jobs here as our communities have wised up and realize that Fire based EMS royally sucks, but here are a few you could check out.......................... http://www.villagefiredept.com/ http://www.cityofhumble.com/fire/history/index.html http://www.katyfire.com/index.shtml http://www.texas-city-tx.org/Fire.htm Good Luck!
  22. Just like the airline industry! Brand new 20ish y/o pilots within minimal training seeking out the big shiny jet jobs for a minimal amount of money. Some even PAY for the opportunity to fly a turbine aircraft. It amazes me the low levels people will stoop to just to get what they want. Professional work ethic is a dying trait.................................
  23. It was a Braun....................................... Our new delivery should be here with a few more of the mods that we discussed last week. I'll post some pics when I see it.................
  24. They should be cited..........and fired........... and liable for the damage caused all vehicles impacted! There is no excuse to not secure your ambulance! As funny as it is to read about other medic's sheer stupidity, what would have happened if this stolen ambulance would have hit a pedestrian? Maybe your child? Something to think about......................
