If it's for work, then buy a cheap plastic watch that you can wash, or don't care if it gets broken etc., make sure it has an easy read dial with a second hand.

Littman Models 3000 and 3100 Electronic Stethoscopes
irlemt replied to Christopher.Collins's topic in Equiqment and Apparatus
I've never used them , but recently heard a Doc complaining about his electronic scope. he said it was picking up unwanted bowel sounds (while listening to the Chest). It was a new scope , so maybe he wasn't using it properly. -
Thanks for adding the link, my computer illiteracy has been laid bare...

Our "Blue light " driving course is 3 weeks long, Our basic driving course is 1 week. Neither are mandatory at the moment. In the UK I believe their Blue Light driving course is done when on their Technician course and is 3 weeks also ( I am open to correction on this)

Not to knock anyone but how accurate are your ears? I recently showed someone how to take a BP with Spygh and stethoscope, they couldn't hear the systolic sounds when I heard them. Now if we were working together and were both taking BP's on a single patient we would get 2 different readings. Another point how often are your Spygh's serviced and calibrated? We have some in use that are nearly 10 years old and never serviced. It's not just machines that need to be calibrated. A few years ago I had a 24 hr blood pressure device on me ( automatic cuff inflated at reg times during the day and night) to check for Hypertension. Now my Doctors treatment decision was based on the findings of machine BP's.

While not defending this type of reckless behaviour I remember a thread a while back on driving in hazardous conditions, someone suggested driving an Ambulance in snow in an area like a parking lot to find out how it behaved. maybe they are EMTCITY members and were just following this advice!!

Who was the first Paramedic in the US or Canada ?
irlemt replied to crotchitymedic1986's topic in General EMS Discussion
The "inventor" of the first (?) portable Defibrillator was a Belfast Doctor (who passed away a few years ago). The Paramedic programme in Ireland is still in its infancy. we still have a long long way to go yet but hopefully we'll get there. Further info can be found on www.phecit.ie -
You can pick up very cheap LED strobes/flashers units on ebay. They will probably do just fine if they're for occasional use.

I remember going to a meeting with a staff member from the Risk Dept. When we said our biggest risk was driving she said that there was very little that you could do to eliminate risk when driving. When we then asked about driving in bad weather ( specifically icy road conditions) she said that if the roads were too bad she would like to see us not driving at all, clearly not going to work. Now consider this, we get very hot and heavy over scene safety, i.e not putting ourselves at risk, but if you are asked to drive in extreme weather conditions are you not, potentially, putting yourself, your partner and other road users at risk, and so, would you ever refuse to travel because it was too dangerous? Now I only ask this as Devils advocate because I know what the answer would be, but Pilots often refuse to fly because of the weather.

my AA maglite with the LED bulb upgrade from NiteIze is the business. Put them into all my AA maglites got them cheap from US ebay. Use them regularly and the batteries last for ages.

From talking to a couple of SA Paramedics who worked Jo'burg they see some serious trauma. One guy I spoke to had been to 13 gunshot patients in one shift (several different calls). And talking to some SA civvies I have no reason to doubt him.

According to a TV programme I saw ages ago this DELTA 32 gene is the same one that prevented some people catching the Black Death in the middle ages. If I remember correctly researchers discovered some evidence to suggest that if one parent passed on the D32 gene then the patient would catch the Black Death but recover, if both both parents passed on the Gene then the "patient" would never catch the Black Death. In the same programme they showed a man in San Fransisco who had lost alot of friends to AIDS and who even though he had the risks he never caught it. It showed researchers adding HIV contaminated blood to Dozens of his blood samples and the HIV never took hold.

Wexford is in IRELAND so we're not British (nothing against the British). So well done to all the crew (including the Doc and the Nurse!!) As for forthnight well that's an everyday term meaning two weeks. There was another story from Drogheda in County Louth regarding a Hungarian farm worker who was pulled from the sea following a canoe accident ( he was alone) and resuscitated for SEVERAL hours. He made a full recovery,

Need info on California suppliers ( L.A. Area)
irlemt replied to irlemt's topic in General EMS Discussion
Thanks guys for all your help, as for the free cylinders they guy going could charm the knickers off a Nun. I'll pass on all the info to him -
Hi, My colleague is going to California shortly with a party of Irish Charity cyclists. He will be working as a driver and First Responder. He would like to find a supplier of EMS equipment in the general L.A. Area as they feel that it would be cheaper to get some basic BLS gear over there than to transport it over from Ireland. He would especially like to find a supplier of D size O2 cylinders (full) for potential use (on the Team only). Can anyone out there help?

That commercial was a joint effort between Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland TV. There are two versions which are identical apart from the ROI one has Garda (Police) officers and the Northern Irish one has NI Police Service. The car number plates are changed to reflect this also
-
Ah , but only an Irish pilot could pull that off!!

I read somewhere that the stars should be towards the heart, does that make sense? (I'm not American so can't offer anyother opinion)
