  1. Tough situation, my friend! I recently faced that when I looked into possibly moving to Mississippi. Nursing board there says no residence = no licence. Louisiana EMS board is the same way. My suggestion is to contact some prospective employers there for advice. The bigger and better agencies are already recruiting nationwide and are more than happy to consider out of state applicants. They also have experience in facilitating the reciprocity process for their applicants. If they want to hire you, they can grease the wheels, and at the very least, give you the peace of mind of knowing you DO have a job waiting for you. NC is a good choice. They are beginning to take a serious lead in educational standards. And there are several NC medics here that can help you out with more specifics. Good luck!

  4. What exactly are you saying? Why should I have any more respect for the firemonkeys than the mechanics who keep my ambo running safely? Or the clerk who makes sure I get paid correctly and on time? Or the guy who ships my supplies? Or, for that matter, the kid who bagged my french fries? They are all part of this mysterious "brotherhood." Without any one part, the whole team breaks down. The guys in that big red truck are no more important to me than any other cog in the wheel.

  7. Any medic who is so eat up with wankerism that he looks forward to EMS "entertainment" is not long for this profession. Entertainment is a way to escape from everyday reality, not to further immerse yourself into the EMS "lifestyle." In fact, those who are truly in the profession -- as opposed to volunteers and wannabes -- are much less likely to have any interest in these shows than the general population. Emergency! did indeed have a seminal impact on the profession we know today. But you can only have one seminal event. Everything after that is just show business. The inspiration behind crap like "Saved" is far, far different from what inspired Bob Cinader and Jim Page. And it shows. And yeah... as Rid said, if you think that Emergency! was chock full of mistakes, you haven't done your homework. Silly and melodramatic? Sure. Inaccurate? Nope.
  8. Absolutely agreed! Excellent point. It's just not that simple for the employer though. Providing the "benefit," while imperitive, is only half the problem. The other half is dealing with the instability this creates within your team. Who works for this employee while she feeds her maternal urge for three months? What do we do with this employee when mama decides she wants her job back? Fire the one who stepped up to help out during the shortage? Screw that. I just believe it should work both ways. The employee needs to respect the employeer as well as vice versa. If you can't afford to have a baby, don't get knocked up and moan about how society won't provide for you. Contrary to what Hillary Klinton thinks, we are responsible for our own offspring, the "village" be damned. And there is no compelling shortage of human beings in this country that we really need to encourage anybody to procreate.

  10. Uhhh... yeah, seriously dude. That's just gross, as well as grossly unprofessional. Only somebody who has never taken microbiology would even think of that. You just made the best possible argument FOR white shirts. Uniforms are like diapers. You WANT to know when they are dirty. You don't just wallow in it and hope nobody notices.
  11. Real time?? :shock: This should be interesting, if not excruciatingly boring. With real time, the one "call" of the day would be the sole focus of each episode, without any opportunity to develop the characters. No character development = no long term public interest. It's going to flop. To drag a "call" (I hate that term) out for an hour, they're going to have to do one of several really bad things. They could make every "call" a stay-and-play run where the idiots dick around on the scene forever, doing a lot of inappropriate stuff. They could spend a lot of time in a full-to-capacity ER, waiting half the show for the nurses to accept the patient (that would be realistic, but boring!). Or, more likely, every "call" will be the stereotypical, overly dramatic busload of haemophiliacs overturned at the bottom of a canyon and on fire, so the really sexy stuff (you know, all that stuff the firemonkeys do, not the medics) can take up half of the episode. I'm sure every other episode they will throw in the obligatory "tactical medic" scenario that actually occurs about once a year nationwide. I can't think of any other way to make one "call" last an hour without putting the entire audience asleep. Hell, I have a hard time staying awake on "calls" when I am the one on them! I can't imagine watching that crap for an hour. :roll:

Yes, the FAQ forum (up top) was set up for the Council to post exhaustive, comprehensive dissertations on frequently asked questions so these top-20 or so could be easily found and linked to in response to people still asking them. We've just never gotten around to taking care of business. It would be a real benefit to the community for us to do so. I mean yeah, we can keep on answering the same questions over and over. But when we do, the answers tend to be hit or miss. We need to research those topics by sitting down and spending hours on end reading previous topics and putting all that info together into one coherent and cohesive post. A few other topics would be: 8. How should I choose a paramedic school? 9. How long should I wait to go to paramedic school? 10. How long does it take to get my NR results? (or really, any other NR related question, since the answer is a link to the NR website). 11. What should I study to get a head start on paramedic school? 12. How should I prepare for my job interview? Each topic should probably be a team effort so that we assure that the final result is comprehensive and won't require a bunch of add-ons after the fact. Maybe each of us take a topic and put it together, then run it past the rest of the Council for recommendations? If we do our research thoroughly here, it should produce some of the best material available on the Internet.
  13. I disagree. Employers shouldn't have to be social workers any more than paramedics should have to be firemonkeys. A very wise bumper sticker philosopher says, "poor planning on your part does not constitute an emergency on my part." These issues should be thoroughly considered and reconciled by the prospective mother well before she gets herself knocked up. You don't just choose to have a baby at a poor time in your life and blame the inconvenience on your employer. Unless, of course, the employer is also the father.

  15. Ooops! Somehow I missed this post before. We did B[sub:71a525ae1d]12[/sub:71a525ae1d] IMs on each other in medic school. I don't think we did SQs on each other. I know we didn't do IVs on each other in medic or nursing school, just venipunctures. Although, in military medic school we did do IVs on each other.
  16. Well, we have only ourselves to blame for the lack of such a FAQ. That's exactly why Admin set the FAQ forum up. Unfortunately, the Council Of Elders has dropped the ball on submitting entries to the FAQ. It's one of those little projects on my to-do list that I never get around to. I even have a list of questions drawn up somewhere. Consequently, the FAQ forum has become a place for n00bs to prove that they don't bother to read before posting. I have never understood what would posess anybody to post a question there in the first place. I mean, think about it. If your question is truly "Frequently Asked," then you shouldn't have to ask it again. And, of course, if it is not frequently asked, then you have no business asking it in the FAQ forum, right? Not to mention the whole forum description sort of tells you that it is for ANSWERING questions, not asking them. Anyhow, your assignment, should you decided to accept it, is to start us off with a nice thorough, comprehensive "How do I get on with FDNY?" FAQ to post there. Maybe that will inspire the rest of us to get on the ball and get this thing done. Then if we could get Admin to clean-sweep and lock that forum so that ONLY the FAQ postings are there, it could be an obvious and valuable resource for all of the community.
  17. Any agency that does not have very specific, written policy forbidding responses of ANY sort with civilians in the vehicle sucks. It is in the P&P manual of any and every professionally managed agency in the U.S. You just do not do it. Fifteen years ago I attended the funeral of a six month old baby who was killed because of this sort of unprofessional wankerism. Volunteer firemonkey decided she would take the kid she was babysitting with her when her pager went off for a grass fire. She rolled the tanker truck into a tree, where it burned with them both in it. I went to the firefighter's funeral too. It was the most lightly attended fire funeral I have ever attended. Yes, and if you drop a bottle of Nitro Stat in the back of your ambulance.... never mind. :roll:

  20. Ah, fair enough. Good point, actually. But I'm not so sure that washing out the weaklings who are not sufficiently motivated to succeed is necessarily a bad thing. There is something to be said for the "sink or swim" school of training. But for those people who sink, yeah... it sucks.
