  1. Rather "sticky", since he does have a certification from the state, that I assume is not limited to any department or agency. The state is saying that he is qualified to render aid as an EMT. Unless he has done someting wrong to a patient I don't see how anyone can place sanctions on him for emergency care.

Is there something I am missing here?

  2. I don't know where you are located, but some agencies have counseling available for the entire team or an individual. I am sure other team members feel the way you do, so it will also benefit them, that you all go together.

As said earlier, do not hold it in, cuz it may "eat you up" later or even affect how you handle future calls.

I must admit, children are my "weak point" when it come to seeing them get seriously hurt in an accident or worse.

Please follow-up and talk it out with a pro.

  3. Great article.

I am happy getting a "Thank You" from our patients, although I don't expect it. If I ever get a hug, I'm not sure how I would handle it.

I just love what I do, and hope when I retire from my regular job, I can devote much more to being an EMT.

  4. Mike,

Great goal to go for in the long run.

Get your certs first so you can see how you feel about helping others and running the show at the same time.

My personal thought, if I had the required funding, business plan, materials, and resources, I would still prefer to work for someone else. Owning a business is great but when the responsibility of running a business takes away from the passion of what you like to do (help people), there will be problems.

Aside from what everyone else has said above, keep in mind "you are the ultimate "chief cook and bottle washer"

Not to burst your bubble, JMHO..

  5. I must admit, I looked on google for nerves controlled from the spine. I will go back and look it up. I threw that out there because it seemed so specific. let me see if I can track it down again and post it here.

It is because the symptoms were bilat, that made me look for a "common demoninator".

My Edit: There is a site called suddenlyms.com that has an illustration of what I was talking about. I tried to copy and paste the image here but for some reason couldn't get it to work.

  6. As an interviewer,I would be asking you what you have been doing to keep up your skills.

Is there anything you have done at all where you used your skills?

The online refresher suggestion sounds great, hope you give it some thought.

My apologies jbro, I should have also welcomed you to these boards, there are a lot of great people here.

  7. I don't know why, but a possible stroke (slurred speech) crosses my mind. Could the slurred speech be caused by the ETOH? When was his last drink?

Looks like most of the physical vitals are OK, I don't understand, why just from the elbows down.

Has this happened to him before?

Worst case of tennis elbow I ever heard of.

  8. "So no titration of O2 to maintain something resembling physiologic norms for a patient's pathology? Just 6 LPM or nothing?"

It was 6 lpm generally for the pt with COPD, any other pt = up to 15 lpm only as needed. Good news is that the protocols should be changing this year

  9. Has anyone had a service change its O2 protocol due to the finding that it can be harmful to patients in the long run?

I understand New York DOH is supposed to be changing their protocols later this year, to the extent of using venturi type masks, also reducing the requirements for NRMs.

  10. I just read a great post regarding the reduction of using backboards. Awhile back there was a post about reducing the over use of O2. I think both of them were by Doczilla.

Is there a way we can develop a category/library where this kind of research can be stored wthin the site. These ideas have generated discussion within my own agency, but when I go to look for the info, I forget where it was located.

It could even be a sponsor benefit.
