Fella's. Everyone has had their say on the Fire vs. EMS issue. Why can't we get back on track and talk about the issue at hand with the man who died. That started this conversation. There has been some interesting articles come out talking about the response of the public works department to this storm, and inadequate planning by prior administrations that bastardized the response. I encourage you to search those out and continue the discussion from there. There still might be something we can all learn from this.

With no knowlege of Austailian geography, in some of the bigger cities here in the states, you can travel 3 miles on the same road and cross though 5 or 6 cities. In Indianapolis there are even whole cities surrounded by the city of Indianapolis itself. The Indianapolis Motor Speedway (home of the Indy 500) is a prime example. It is located in the town of Speedway, which is completely surrounded by the city of Indianapolis, but still its own governing body..

Spen, normally you have some good thinking points. This is not one of them. How many "normal: jobs work 24 hour shifts? You are asking these guys to bring the stock of a kitchen into work with them every 3rd day? What if this was a 3rd service EMS, with no set station, caught at McDonalds between calls, 6 blocks from their post? Not making the fire/ems argument, God knows thats been hashed out enough, I just would like to hear your response. Bushy, I researched this when the story broke, the store they go to is just a couple of blocks outside the city limits, but about 1/4 the distance to the closest store in town.

I would disobey if its a bad order yes. Wouldn't you? I don't think this was a MCI either. It was a failure to plan. This snow storm didn't exactly sneak up on them. Even with 12 hours lead time, you can increase staffing and get things in place for operation. Where was the inter-agency coordination? Why was there no plows working to clear the street? No 4x4s available with the agency, the FD, or the city? No firemen available to help carry? I know some of that is addressed in the article, but its all questions we need to think about. Like I said, they need to issue an official report, and release the details, due to the publicity of it.

No. The caller was in too much pain to walk to the ambulance so it was canceled. I haven't read who canceled it but that shouldn't matter. Thats a red flag. The crew should not have accepted the cancelation. No excuses.

I don't see how anyone can try and absolve or justify EMS response. I know you can't base your facts off the media, but it sure sounds like a case of a medic not wanting to get his feet wet. I have been in a stuck ambulance before... I hiked the 1/3 of a mile to assess the paitent and situation while they worked on the ambulance. Why didn't these workers? Even more so if the house was in sight?!? I hope a report is made, and avialable for review. Sounds like it will be a good training document.

Hey guys. Does anyone have power points or other material you use for EVOC and driver training? I am looking for things discussing legal issues, liability, traffic patterns, and first aid for a non-certified driver. I promise I will not rip your stuff off, and use as my own. I am trying to develop a program, and am starting from scratch. I had a good bank of resources to dig through and lost a hard drive. Assuming you are dispatched by radio you need this first: Federal Signal Informer Or a similar product. Once you get that installed, and programmed to your frequency and alert tones, you (or someone with electrical knowledge) will need to set up a system with relays and transformers to activate your lights. You can actually do quite a bit with it as long as you know what you are doing. It would be fairly easy to set it up to turn on bunk lights, flash a strobe in high noise areas (day rooms, work out rooms, bays) and even open the garage door. One solution to the bright light effect, would be to set up some can celing lights with low lumen and possibly red colored bulbs, to make the light softer. I should note too... thats the basic of basic options. You can get more elabroate systems but there would be cost involved and your dispatch would have to be involved in it too. Just do a quick google search of "Fire Station Alerting" and you can see some of the options out there.

Unfortunately, too many uneducated people won't take a look beyond the reports of his religion either and use this to further spread hatred. If it is a terroristic act, then that will come out in the investigation, and hopefully any associates and himself will be punished. Sadly, most of the time the investigation comes out months afterwards and, if its not exciting enough, gets relegated to page D4 and the 11pm Saturday news.

Facebook came to mind because it is so popular. I remember about 2 or 3 sites ago (;D) there was a collection of banners we could use to promote. I would love to have a PDF file we could print off and put up in breakrooms, or a couple of images we could put on our blogs/websites ect. Thats more of what I was getting at. Don't get me wrong, there isn't anything wrong with who is here, but, you can only preach to the chior so long, no? Phil, and Ruff, can only get into so many arguements!!! I do love the way the site has become over the last year, its a bit more drastic to me, since I was gone for a while, but none the less it has improved for the better. Take pride in what you have helped to create!

Seems a touch elitist? I think we as a community do a very good job of policing ourselves, no? If we want to spread education, how can we do it without being inviting to newcomers? Obviously there are the good and the bad, but historically look at how long the bad stick around, or, take to be converted?

Sorry Admin, I don't know if or where I should post this at. Can we get more tools to work with to promote the website to our friends and co-workers? Maybe a Facebook Fan Page, some PDF flyers we can print and put on bulletin boards.... an option to E-Mail links to friends? It seems like things have slowed down a little bit, maybe we could all help to drive some new blood and thoughts/ideas/education in here?

When our service transitioned from volly to part time coverage, the town attorney told us the above. If anyone wanted to work part time they had to completely resign from the volly side and could only run calls during scheduled hours.

Ill clarify spen. You can't put in 8 hours at 10/hr and then the next 2 at 0/hr for the same company.

Just as a side note, there are state and federal laws against volunteering time for your company. If you were to come in on your day off, and do patient education in the name of your company for free, you would be setting them up for a wage and labor lawsuit.

I nominate this for the "EMTcity Understatement of 2009" I came in on the tail end of this and would have to agree is was very civil, realitive to the surroundings. It seems like every debate here ends with everyone agreeing to disagree, until they don't agree again. Not many will admit it, but even the staunchest defenders of a position leave these debates learning something.

Can anyone more versed in homeland security, than myself, explain what the significance is of this? What benefits will it offer public health?
