Everyone else tells us how to do our jobs. Why cant we tell someone sometimes?

They only people I have ever seen humiliated and intimidated in this forum are those that make an ass clown of themselves. Which was not you Connie. The three pitfalls to EMS: Egos and sensitivity. Fragmented licensure and education systems. The inability to change due to private greed. If we can work on these three problems, we can get much accomplished. Thats the biggest problem, not everyone WANTS to be on the same page. Too many EMT's and paramedics don't care about the system. They bring home a paycheck and have a steady job, so why should they buck it?

Do you ever work on the ambulance alone? Cover overtime shifts? Give an extra hand for coverage? You just lost someones wages right there. If we had an 8 hour overtime shift in dispatch, and someone said "Hey, I'll come in and work for you guys for free, I know the job" Damn right I would be pissed off. Thats about 160 dollars that "good samaritan" lost me. No I'm not doing the job just for the money. Yes, I have to be able to pay bills and eat.

How does an EMT save a paramedic? I consider myself quite a bit more educated, than my EMT-B counterparts and I still don't I have anything to offer a paramedic. About the only good I am for him is freeing him from taking vital signs, and spiking his IV bag.

That shouldn't be your problem. Thats the thing. Police are used to dealing with these situations every day. You shouldn't be given the task of walking up to someones house that no one has seen for 2 weeks and finding out if they are ok or not. In fact I would say atleast here, 75% of those calls are nothing. And honestly I can't remember one EMS was dispatched to. One of three things happen: 1) They went on vacation and didn't tell one person 2) They died 2 weeks ago 3) That person that called just wasn't observant. Seriously Anthony, your system is setting its self up for some liabilty by going to all of these welfare checks. We don't even send an ambulance to the scene alone on an unknown lifeline alarm. They go in with PD.

Start asking for them everytime. Annoy the piss out of them.

Addendum: If it is an active suicidal with means to do it or has done it, we will put a ambulance on standby in the area usualy 1/2 to a mile away.

In this situation, our dispatch would send a police unit to the scene. Thats just doing a welfare check, and no need for EMS to even be involved. Your dispatch needs to look at their protocols a little bit better, they may need worked on. Those are actualy some dangerous situations, where PD should be the ones to check on. A suicidal person, if they want to do it, will and will take you with them if they have to. The little old lady could be DRT, and it could be a possible crime scene.
