  1. I have to agree, the handle does seem to appear to be a little more ergonomic. At least I am not the only one who heard the teeth clicking. I had to watch it a few times to be sure. The technique is exactly what we were taught NOT to do. Maybe if they used a proper technique, they would be able to visualize the airway better and not need the fancy pants lights.
  2. It looks interesting, but I really don't see how it would help all that much. Unless there is a lot blood or whatever in the airway, I don't see many benefits. ps, is it just me, or was the technique used to intubate in that video pretty crappy? Looked a lot like a fulcrum affect.
  3. How fast was that ambulance going in the crash test? Looks pretty nasty back there. No equipment laying around either me be tossed about though.
  4. That's terrible. I wonder what had happened? Non emergent transport back to a nursing home. Suddenly swerving to avoid nothing in the road..
  5. A day late... but happy bday!
  6. Great advice from everyone. Here is a site that I have found some what useful for guidance in interviewing. http://www.firecareerassist.com/html/firefighter_ems_interview.htm Most of all, stay calm. Try your best not to look nervous. I always suggest to students in the field who are on the job or even interviewing for a job, to "act like a duck". No, I don't mean quack or waddle around. I mean, act all calm on the outside, what they can see. But underwater, kicking like crazy. You can ask questions too! Wait until they are done, and ask them some things, even if you know the answer already. It shows them you were listening and taking things seriously. Bring a brief case or a fancy looking shoulder bag with you. Put a resume in there and any other certifications (copies of) you may have. Show them you came prepared. edit: forgot something. Don't overdue it with perfume or hairspray. Anything that would turn them off by an overwhelming smell. Also, fresh breath helps too. Coffee/cigarette breath.. yea, nasty! Good luck!
  7. SA isn't in SA anymore if I remember right.
  8. Was this a news article of a post apocalyptic war story? Still quite tragic that this happened, but I am sure the reporters could have been a little more tactful with their writing.
  9. If I go to your country, I have to follow your laws/regulations. You come to mine, you should do the same.
  10. Plenty of firefighters respond to nursing homes when 911 is called....
  11. Terrible news. Safe trip and return home to all the rescuers!
  12. That was hilarious! Almost a perfect depiction of a nursing home. I once had a pt at a nursing home that 'was not acting right'. Checked their chart as I was walking to their room. Noticed first that the patient was diabetic... since it was tagged on the front of the folder. Asked the nurse if they checked the BGL. They said no, but had given them water a few hours ago (it's 2am now). Checked BGL and it was 54 mg/dl (3mmol/l). I guess the water didn't work.
  13. there is also a "sparkling wiggles" video..
  14. Cops sure do stick together don't they and never forget either.
  15. Community Colleges FTW!! Many of them offer quite a bit of continuing education as well, usually at no cost, or very cheap.
  16. WOW! Did I really just see DD give positive encouragement to a whiner? Glad to see this! As often as we butt heads, I respect his opinion and expertise. That being sad, I have also heard lots of bad about this school. It is no secret. In my opinion, the school is there to cater to the firefighters that have to obtain and hold a paramedic cert. Typical assembly line education. Minimal, bare requirements, bare education. Get in, get out, go play with hoses, go lose your cert because you are a moron. Keep your mouth shut, get your pass squeezed through by shady paperwork. Open your mouth, complain, be a really huge idiot and some how manage to fail out.. go whine about it to professionals who put the real time and effort into their educations and training. Insult some of the most intelligent quality posters and providers out there when they speak their wisdom.... Am I on the right track?
  17. Sorry to hear of all the bad luck. Hope your wife keeps improving and things work out the best for you.
  18. My gym has all kinds of classes.. aerobics, pilates, yoga, etc etc.. no pole dancing though. I often thought of taking these classes just to see what all the hype is about....
  19. Very true. But every provider should know about the "kill zone". You should always approach the entry from the side, and not right in front of it. Pretty sure they still teach that. As for combines, or any other machinery/equipment. No one should attempt to mess with them unless they are familiar. Just because you are from the city, doesn't mean you are oblivious to how things work outside of a car/truck. It is mostly common sense on how to turn such equipment off. The other things, I do agree with though. Knowing your area makes it safer for everyone. There was a time when I had to transport a patient to a different hospital, and on the way, the highway was blocked off because of a house fire. The firefighters drug the 5inch across the road. Dispatch knew there was a fire, they knew we were going that way but nothing was said. Thankfully my driver knew a back way around the incident and we made it to the hospital before the patient stopped breathing and flooded the ambulance with sweat (his mostly). If there had been a different driver, we could have been screwed. No one directing traffic, no one doing the detour crap. Now with GPS for those who have it, that wouldn't have been too much of a problem other than being annoyed by other peoples ignorance. Just an example of how knowing your area will greatly benefit your patient.
  20. Pole dancing is actually quite demanding on the human body. Needs quite a bit of agility, stamina and strength to do it, well. Not to mention it is probably fun to just do it. Aside from the usual reasons of doing it. They even have competitions for pole dancing. That being said, so what? I pulled a muscle at the gym when I was lifting. Does that mean I am going to sue them? Just because she was doing something provocative every should suddenly give a damn? Get a life lady!
  21. I think the point is taking one ambulance from one area, and putting it in another area. Say ambulance A is on a long distance transport because of weather or something. Ambulance B gets called into ambulance A's area to cover a call. Ambulance C covers B. There is an accident, and 5 ambulances are needed. Now they are all coming to an area they aren't familiar with. That being said, in Pennsylvania, even if an ambulance takes a call into a different region where the scope/standing orders are different, they still act under the guidelines from which they came. They do not have to change everything just because they crossed a line.
  22. Oh, but you CAN! And yes, it does actually fly!
  23. Hello, welcome to the city
  24. Yes, but parking is a little bit more tricky.
