  1. There are plenty of "combined" services that are "separate" FNDY for example. They are a fire department ambulance, but they are not firefighters. City of Allentown, is fun by the City of Allentown Police. Their dual medic ambulances are not all cops, and their cops are not all medics. It is possible to be combined and have separate duties.
  2. speaking of virgins... I just watched 18yr old virgin the other day... terrible terrible movie, but there are some great nudie scenes! also, district 9 was awesome. I need to find out a way to stream live video off my computer...
  3. Airplanes create lift because of the pressure is greater on the bottom of the wing than the top. With forwards movement and the air pushing up on the wings, they will take off. Helicopters create their own lift with the rotor blades. I won't get into details of the different types of rotors, but there are 3 different types I believe. Anyway, the rotors spin rapidly, and the blades articulate use of the collective. This will create the "lift" the helicopter needs to take off depending on which direction they move. Lift is propotional to the amount of power given to the aircraft, and the angle it is facing. Also, the blades spinning creates a lot of torque on the aircraft, which will ALWAYS make it want to spin out of control, hence the tail rotor (thanks Igor). This is counteracted by using, yes, the "anti-toruqe" pedals. Hope you enjoyed my lame tutorial on how helicopters fly
  4. cooking meat on an open fire and drinking beer in my undies
  5. I lol'd thanks Terri
  6. Wow, great post from the new person. Welcome to the city. Peer review can use useful and bad depending on how the people getting reviewed look at it. Some old timers might hate it because they have been doing it for so long and feel threatening/annoyed they have to be reviewed, some newbies might hate it because they are new and probably will feel like they are under the microscope. In my opinion, everyone should get reviewed, go through mandatory training every shift or at least once a week. A lot of the skills we perform are seldom used. This however, does not mean you don't know how to do them. It just means, skills that aren't used often, deteriorate in proficiency. The same goes with medications. The more we do to better ourselves with what little we have, the more we may get later in the future. If we prove to our medical directors we take such pride, and put forth extensive ONGOING education and training above and beyond the normal stuff to keep current with certs, the more they will think we are mature enough and capable enough for more responsibility. If one station does this, then another, then another, and it will eventually catch on all over the place. Being reviewed is a great idea to me because I would always like to know where I could improve on everything I do. Even if I do things properly, ideas on how to make them easier/safer/better are always welcome. Such things as technical rescue and medical care, to massive MI care, all the way down to just talking to the patient by keeping them calm, having some humor for them. It's pretty awkward when you don't know what to say to a patient when they are talking to you. We should always strive to better ourselves and our profession, all the way down to the new guy, all the way up to the boss. EMS is still "new" in a manor of speaking. Let's show everyone what we are about!
  7. Once again a very informative post chbare. It's always a pleasure to read what you have to say
  8. Fantastic movie, I watch that at least 2-3 times a month. Keep your schedules clear for October 30th, the sequel comes out that day.
  9. Wal-mart always gives the FF's free stuff, but never EMS! those jerks! Well anyway, people just need to stop complaining all the time and start doing their job. If they don't like it, find a new one. Complaining gets you no where, it makes you look like a child. What needs to be done is compiling the facts, statistics, financial figures or the past, present and projected outcome. Then present it to the people who can make a difference. With the proper research and information ready to back up your battle, in a professional manor, might get things done a little better than whining on a forum. Lawyers prepare greatly for their trials, we should prepare just as much to fight for a better profession.
  10. I heard that movie got really good reviews, but haven't gotten the chance to watch it yet. I'm loading up my netbook for when I am bored at work out staging someplace. Thanks for the suggestions. More are welcome. btw... "skid marks" terrible movie.. I want that time of my life back, although the chick was HOT
  11. Hope she gets well soon.
  12. Learn to read and comprehend. I am neither for or against either or the two, or three to make you happy. I was pointing out aspects from each that are good and bad. Would you like to throw in postal carriers now too? I mean, they are public service right? Those jerks didn't deliver a package of needed medical supplies because we were out on a call with the FD! OMG THE HORROR! You just want something to bitch about. It's all you do.
  13. are you trolling? seriously... stop trying to bring more into it.
  14. Being that I am a firefighter, well (was) volunteer FF with FFII and FOI certs, I know quite a deal of the fire service and enjoyed it very much. Reasoning that I left was because of EMS and the politics between the two. I don't need to get into details, but I still enjoy firefighting and miss it. I would not give up EMS for it though. I love doing EMS. I just don't understand why some people have to be to narrow minded about this. We need each other, we both have very important jobs to do. One job might be harder than the other, but it goes both ways. We have to work together in many cases, but we can't do them alone in most. An EMT/Paramedic can't run into a burning building and also be expected to give patient care. Sure, you could be a crossed trained provider, but you just can't do both at the same time. People who complain about one profession to the other need to grow up and smell the coffee. Will your ambulance service come put out your house when it's on fire with the fire extinguisher? No, I bet they won't, they can try, but it just won't work. Will a fire engine come when your mother is having a heart attack? Oh wait, yea.. they do! But they aren't there to give care, they come to help. As well as EMS should come help at a fire. It is very exhausting work, and they should be looked after and evaluated before doing more interior/over haul. Given O2 when needed, wounds cared for, and just simple assessments. Read about it too often that a FF collapses at a fire, and no one is really there to help. Medically trained personnel are a key feature in any scenario, as are the firefighters. I will not try to say one is better than the other, because they aren't. Argue all you want, but we need each other. The sooner we get along and work together, the sooner things get better for all of us. You know, there was a time when a black person had to sit in the back of the bus, and women weren't allowed to vote. Now a days, its appalling to hear such sexism and racism... Grow up!
  15. well hello... how are you?

  16. funny stuff
  17. Unless you are working in an environment that's really quiet, I don't suggest you get one. I have tried one on the ambulance before, and in patients homes. You pick up a lot of background noise. Even with using the adjustments, I just don't feel it's worth it.
  18. ah yes... the almighty pulse ox... should be the first tool you use on every patient... it's a true life saver! In fact, I just might start using two, one on each hand of the patient.
  19. what about blue... for landing lights?
  20. +1 to STAT. Great post, couldn't have said it better myself.
  21. thanks for the update... how he gets better soon!
  22. Thanks dust. I seen that miss piggy video, and that's what had me curious. Didn't know about all the complications.
  23. so who wants to recert my ACLS and PALS on yahoo im? lol jk Lots of my instructors who taught these courses were paramedics. My NRP was taught by nurses, and ITLS was a RN. Only time an MD taught a class, was for a legal lecture. This must be a regional thing where you live by a pud touching medical director.
  24. good to see you again SA
