Dust I hate to say this but....you are wrong dude.....everyone has a place in ems dont matter if it is paid or volly. It is EMS people with the attitude you have that makes volunteers look bad..getting paid dont always mean better care.....i havent lasted 16 years in this business by not knowing my skills and as far as expirence i havent spent the last 16 years sitting on my a** doing nothing.

Here is my two cents worth on this one,,,, I have been in EMS for 16 years and all these years I have done nothing but volunteer, That is my personal choice. I love EMS cant imagine my life without it . But I do understand the points of view of those that this is their carreer. But I dont think that is fair for the carreer people to not want volunteers around....well I say in this world we all need to pull together...everyone has a place in the system either way paid or volly ... We as a system in whole are our own worst enemies We bicker back and forth between each other. Just because you are paid dont make you any smarter or better than me because I volunteer and because I volunteer that dont make me any better than you because you get paid. I had to go to the same training you did, and last time i looked the states or the National Registry just dont hand out cards to people just because they want them. And to say that because I am a volunteer that makes me unprofessional is just wrong. Professionalism is not based on my payday or volunteer status it based on my attitude. I live in a ruaral area we have both paid and volly services for rescue squads All our Fire Dept are volly unless it is a forest fire then we get paid by the forestry dept.

Cos ......To answer the Glucagon question our standing order at the NH for low BS is give it first if unresponsive ....I aggressive treat my residents because unlike some of you guys that think that Nursing home nurses are stupid and lazy I am not...I was not trained as nurse or a EMT I to not do what is needed to save a life ...I do what needs to be done when it needs to be done. I work at a boondocksville NH and honey you can bet your sweet ass that i know what cardiac arrest looks like and how to initate treatment on it.

Doc here i am gonna amend the post here is the full story I work in a long term care facality as a nursing supervisor ........i was on the phone with the md getting the orders for all the interventions when the first amp of d50 was given followed by the 500cc bolus and i was getting ready to push the second when the squad arrived to transport the patient to the ER...when they arrived on scene 20 mins later they were questioning why i gave the medications and didnt wait on them to arrive. I was wondering if anyone else would question that or not ......hope thait makes it clearer

Here is the scenario: This takes place in long term care facility, You have a hypoglycemic patient... vital signs: b/p 50/pal.... resp 10 and shallow. pulse 60 and thready.....BBS clear pulse ox 95% on RA..BS 47.. the nurse supervisor has given 1ml glycogen Im per protocol and BS is now 44 after 10 minutes... the supervisor now has an order from the patients own MD to start a line and give 1 amp of D50 and a 500 cc bolus of of D5 ...if in 10 minutes the BS is below 60 push another amp of D50...you arrive on scene and have all your als procedures done for you accept placed on a monitor and NRB ..........(you arrive on scene 20 minutes after being dispatched) and the BS on your arrival is only 54 after all the interventions above have been done.....here is the question ....do you question the 500 cc bolus of D5 being given and the second amp of D50 (which was not given).......

Our job is to take anyone anytime to the hospital when 911 is called...if you dont want to do your job...then GET THE HELL OUT......the remark stated above is not acceptable....shows 2 things 1. no compassion. and last but not least POOR PROFRESSIONALISM..... even the bs calls the patient needs to be treated with respect and dignity...to you it maybe bs to them it may be serious.....it is like always in the preception....... as always just my two cents worth Terri :angel12:

My feelings are no it does not indicate poor patient care (personally)....but it does indicate shoddy and poor doucementation on the medics part which in turn makes them look bad and unintelligent for a lack of a better word. If you dont take pride in your doucementation then yes it can make you look like you didnt take care of the patient....It is much easier to explain a clear and accurately done call sheet than it is to try to figure out what the hell you were saying when you turn in a grammarly incorrect or one that has misspelled words.....a bad lawayer can have a field day with that one....and a good lawyer will shake your hand for it...It is all in the preception.... just my two cents worth Terri :angel12:

Nope never puked yet 16 years in ems.....The thing that comes close everytime to making me puke is "snot" can handle blood, guts, brain matter, vomit and other body fluids.....but "snot" does it every time....... makes me want to puke that is T :angel12:
