  1. Why would the venturi masks be high flow? While we can transport these without issue, we don't use them prehospital.
  2. Actually, John the Baptist was Jewish...Christianity didn't come around for many years post Christ.
  3. Out of curiosity, in the prehospital setting, what would then constitute "high flow O2?" In southern AZ, we can transport vented pts, but not initiate vents (too bad, cause it'd free up hands during a code).
  4. It also supposedly corresponds to a bump in the amount of white blood cells in the newborn. I don't know about you guys, but several times a month, families bring in their little boys (usually around 2 years and NOT potty trained) to the ED for "swollen penis." As each case evolves, a common thread among them is a lack of education in what/how to clean properly, which leads to irritation and inflammation.
  5. Ok...so I got hold of the AZ state Fire Marshal's Office, training division, and the lady there...Molina stated "I don't know what the difference is. You'd have to look at a course." So...who knows in AZ what the difference is. I was told, however that they are no longer held separately (1 and 2) and are now held as one course, so you come out of any academy in AZ with your 1 & 2.
  6. Heard an engine sent to a "snatle rake" the other day.
  7. I was actually speaking on my preference if I was in her shoes. Suffocation is not my preference on ways to go...
  8. I do know that AZ doesn't usually have any FF1 for FF2 academys that are separate...they are typically held together.
  9. Plz keep in mind that I've been out of the business for a couple of years, however AZ used to split it up that FF1 (the inital cert) would be able to do exterior fire fighting...with the more advanced cert (FF2) being able to do the interior attacks. AZ is a strange state on many levels, so just to make sure things haven't changed-or I'm just talking out my ass, I'll get in contact with the state fire marshal's office in the AM and ask the horse itself.
  10. Where at for R/M? They are who I started with in Tucson, and made good $. I think a basic, fresh off the street starts around $32k a year...which is very livable here.
  11. Talk about a siffy...
  12. There was a case in Tucson not to long ago where a SNF (in reality, one of the NSNF--Non-skilled nursing facility), left an elderly lady in a wheel chair, on a non-rebreather mask at 2 lpm...and they left her for so long...she died.
  13. Not ment to be offensive, but it's kind of a dumb question. The difference between them is a FF1 is only able to do exterior fire attacks. FF2 is able to do searches/rescues and interior attacks. FF1 is fairly useless by itself in my oppinion.
  14. Ya...forget getting unpluged from the vent...I'll take 3ml of insulin any day instead.
  15. Good for you on your continued weight loss. I understand the idea of "fear" for doing one vs. the other (dumping syndrome, etc.etc.). Have you noticed any psych issues since surgery, if it's not getting too personal?
  16. I came off the streets FT in Oct. 06. I was 27, and had been on the streets FT for 7 years. I am currently finishing my BS in Paramedicine (mostly cause I only have 15 credits left) from NAU, and do my prereqs for med school. It was something I've been entertaining for a while, and I figured that if I'm really goanna do it, now is the time. I know work FT for University Medical Center in Tucson. It's been a great experience as it's a "true" teaching hospital. With luck, I will be in med school within 2 years, and once I graduate residency and fellowship I want to come back as a medical director somewhere.
  17. I shot the Sheriff...
  18. Ya...traumatic codes almost never survive...I've seen one survive to discharge in the last 2 years, & he was neuro intact! God bless the young and foolish.
  19. The way I mostly cope with this stuff is, I go and beat on my wife. Ok...not really, she'd kick my butt big time. Seriously though, I am fortunate that I can vent to her about this kind of stuff and she understands, as she is also a medic. It's important that you not bottle up the feelings that you have over calls like this...if you do, they tend to fester like a minor infection, then blow up at the least opportune time. The first time I really had an opportunity to "use" this ability to vent with my wife, I never took advantage of it. It was my first peds code as a medic, and of course the situation was a possible abuse/neglect issue. As it turns out, it was an infection that was being treated, but had managed to get out of control, and was really no one's fault. I was still f*cked up for over 2 weeks. Find someone whom you can talk to, even if its yourself. You can even write yourself a letter and get feelings out that way. Whatever works...keep with it. Good luck!
  20. My first call as a basic was to a minor MVA. I got all excited, because I just graduated the fire academy 2 months prior, and the captain o/s was one of my instructors. My first call as a medic...S/O involved shooting. When I finally got there (the fire district I worked for was in BFE, and this call was in BFE's BFE) found out the "victim" of the shooting, wasn't shot. He got his finger caught in the door and had a very small lac. Needless to say, as I was the only one on the engine and the box was 20 min behind me, I was a little relieved. Although I did end up needing to re-appulster the drivers seat in the engine...
  21. "Let's all extend a Loral and Hardy handshake to our new ******!" -Blazing Saddles (forgive me if I've misspelled) "Knight jumps Queen!" (History of the World, Part 1) "I'm a mog. Part man and part dog. I'm my own best friend." (Spaceballs)
  22. "Let's play chess."
  23. So there was this lady sitting on a park bench, eating lunch, when a guy came over and sat near her. He noticed that she kept sneezing, and when she did, she would have an orgasm. He finally got up the nerve and said "Wow, that's some problem you got there. What do you take for it?" She replied, "pepper."
  24. It's not paranoia if they actually are after us...
  25. Interesting. In Arizona, one of the required drugs is a multi-dose vial of atropine. As well as 3-4 bristojets.
