graduation from emt/ or paramedic school
bumpus replied to thecroc's topic in Education and Training
Yes, AnatomyChick, NREMT is a cert not a license, but for Illinois, when I take the NR test, I will be sent both the NR cert and the Illinois license, that was all I meant. I understand that it's not a license from the NREMT. That was all I was getting at. So that was the only reason I was trying to figure out if Asysin2leads was directing that toward me. I'm not getting my knickers in a bunch over it. -

Hell yeah, it looks like that? That's sweet! So instead of the Jobu statue, is it a little dust action figure or what?? I'm sure he appreciates the liquor you leave him!

I just finished up EMT-B class, and we didn't do anything. Quite truthfully, most of us are waiting until we take the written NREMT test before we start too much celebrating. Yeah, we passed the class, but until we have our grubby little hands on the license, we can't do anything with the training. -
Congratulations!

What were the hands-on parts of your EMT-B class like?
bumpus replied to bumpus's topic in Education and Training
Hey Sarge. Unfortunately, I have no affiliations, and don't know anyone who is currently an EMT or medic. I'm just gonna have to tough it out. I'm good with the written tests, for the most part. I just don't feel very comfortable with hands on yet. But I guess it'll come with time and practice. -

The girls must love me. I'm the only guy in this thread so far We did have hands on, it's just that we were not shown how it should be done. We had to use the book to figure it out. I was just saying that I think our instructor should have demonstrated how to use each device. -

Thanks for the replies, everyone. It sounds like we're not being taught as well as we should be. But this isn't the first time that thought has entered my mind during this class. Kelley, your idea about requesting more time is a great one, but we're down to 4 class sessions before we're done, and at least half of those are devoted to testing. Some of us from class will be getting together to try and make sure that we all understand the splinting basics. Our class has not been run well from the beginning, and it's only gotten worse in my opinion. I should have spoken to someone earlier, but the fear of possible retribution from the instructor lingers in my head. I'm not sure what she could do to ruin my chances of passing, but I don't want to find out Ah well, thanks again guys and girls. -
Our class recently went through the splinting portion of class. We had most of one class set aside to physically work with all of the apparatus we need to understand how to use. However, when that day came, our instructor basically told us to use our books and learn how to use everything. I felt she should have demonstrated how everything worked, as opposed to having us figure it out from the book, and hope that we're doing it correctly. So is this how it's generally done??

Sorry, no advice from me, but good luck all the same!

I'm not gonna argue with you, guy. There's no sarcasm in my first post. At any rate, I'll sign off this particular thread.

I think almost all classes are required to do clinicals, whether ride time, hospital time, or more than likely, both. No one said there's anything wrong wiht putting newly learned skills to use. I don't think anyone's comments said anything in regards to that. Your post sounds like you're defending yourself, when there's nothing to defend against! Or did I miss someone's post?
-
Equivalent, you've only been in class for two weeks or so, right? I guess I'm surprised that they're having you do ride alongs already. I've been in class for a little less than a month, and we have to have certain knowledge before we're allowed to do any clinicals. That made sense to me, since we'd be wasting everyone's time if we have no idea what we're doing. Obviously your class must be different. At any rate, good luck with the ride time. Shane

We need more people too dumb to pass NREMT?
bumpus replied to DwayneEMTP's topic in General EMS Discussion
I read this in the news the other day, and was ashamed I live in Illinois. It reminded me why moving out of the state is one of my priorities. Here I am looking forward to taking the National test when I'm done with class, so that I can get easier reciprocity with other states, and Illinois is wanting to move away from that to a state test. An admittedly easier test. Geez. That's gonna help keep Illinois EMTs competitive with other states. -
Good luck, Rathbone. My EMT-B class starts tonight. I'm a little nervous and really excited, much like I assume you are.

I just wanted to thank everyone for their input. The school was unable to help with a loan for a single class. On a happy note, I was able to convince family to help me out, so I am officially enrolled in class now! Hopefully you will all start to see me around more often, as I begin to have questions once class has gotten under way. Thank you again to everyone that gave me suggestions! Shane

As much as I'd like to, I don't have the time to go to school full time. So other classes are pretty much out of the question at this point. But I do understand what everyone's saying about taking some classes that would aid me further down the road. Thanks for everyone's input!

Already in the works, Noah. But I do appreciat your response! I have an appointment next week with both an academic advisor and financial aid. I was just trying to get a leg up on the info by asking around.

Sorry r/r, I must be really tired because I'm not following you. The college I'm looking at does have Paramedic training, but I can't take those until after I have my EMT-B obviously. As far as grants/scholarships, I already applied for those, and I don't think I'll be getting anything. As far as worrying about basic, I'm definitely not:) But at the moment, I have to work full time, so I don't have time to take more than one class right now. I'm not sure whether your post confused me, or whether I confused myself!!!

Here's the story:) Over the last several months, I've decided that I would very much like to be an EMT. After weighing all of the pros and cons, the pros won out by a landslide. Anyway, I'm hoping to take the EMT-B class this coming semester at our local community college. However, I don't have the money to pay for it. I already asked Pop for some cash, and he hasn't decided yet. But if he's a no go, can you get a student loan for taking one single class like this? I hate to sound stupid, but I'm not familiar enough with college loans to know whether they apply to classes of this type. I've already applied for student aid, and it's looking like I'm not gonna get anything. So the big question is, did anyone else get a small student loan? If you did get a loan, how easy was it? I realize that my class plus books is most likely going to only be around $700 total, but like I said, I just don't have that much right now, and I already scrape by, so I can't cut out any "luxuries" to be able to afford it. Any help is much appreciated from you guys!!
