Run Run Run Faster than my bullets can ...............
DFIB replied to flamingemt2011's topic in Archives
Every time we look at a situation or a person’s actions we make a judgment as to its decency, accurateness’, veracity and agreement with the social contract that our society generally accepts and lives by. With an everything goes mentality being portrayed and promoted by so many different means the importance of family and the teaching of values in the home become even more important. Our children, even after they are young adults need and want guidance. They want us to give them advice in a calm and loving way. They want us to help bear the burden of growing up. Wither they will admit it or not they want the parents and older family members to set the standard that they can come back to. The key for me has been personal responsibility, the conviction that everyone is responsible for their own actions and the positive or negative consequences these actions may bring. As parents we draw the line in the sand and be sure to stay in the room when it is crossed. -

Are you having a childhood flashback? Dude! I hope you don't mind me calling you dude. -
The Cincinnati Stroke Scale is a fundamental diagnostic checklist to discover the suspicion of stroke and useful for the early detection of CVA/TIA. We all use it frecuently. I know I am preaching to the choir here but for context I will mention that it evaluates three major physical findings. 1. Facial droop 2. Motor arm weakness 3. Speech abnormalities . I have read that a fourth sign is a tongue deviation associated with supranuclear 7th nerve palsy and that the tongue will deviate toward the side of the weakness. Do you have experience with this sign? Do you include it in you differential evaluation of patients’ suspect of CVA/TIA?

Not an Aussie but there are several really crazy ones on this forum. Did you pick your screen name after Kinky Friedman? Welcome to the City

I would not derive an impression of presumption from any of your post. It is very obvious that you share your knowledge because you believe that it may or may not be useful to the rest of us as providers. Your post are received in the spirit that they are given. Whatever you do, please keep it up. Our flaming friend seems to enjoy posting inflammatory remarks just to see what response he can incite. I don’t know why we give him the time of day except that he makes the forums a little more entertaining.

Checking temp 'to touch.' What part of your hand do you use?
DFIB replied to DwayneEMTP's topic in General EMS Discussion
I have calluses on my hands as well as many other active people. This could cause desensitation as well. -
It is a guy thing. Simply appreciation for a friend sharing his knowledge and time when he probably had better things to do.

I agee with everything cbare wrote! This is so obviously a thread for medics but I simply can't resist. Was his chest x-ray negative? Did he have Jugular Vein Distention? Was his trachea midline? What were his lung sounds?

DFIB replied to DwayneEMTP's topic in General EMS Discussion
I think that we check the temperature by pulling our glove down and using the back of out hand because that is what the AAOS EMERGENCY Care and Transportation of the Sick and Injured Tenth Edition states as part of the Primary Patient Assessment. If it is still in the Tenth edition I could be reasonably sure that it had been included in the prior editions as well. The text reads: ”Body temperature is usually measured with a thermometer in a hospital. However, in the field, feeling the patient’s forehead with the back of your hand is usually adequate to determine whether the patient’s temperature is elevated or decreased” AAOS EMERGENCY Care and Transportation of the Sick and Injured Tenth Edition states in Chapter 8, page 273 -
I think not. Considering that your hands will be a little cold the bottle temp is probably just right.

Good thing the drinks are after the run you could get cited for RWI (Running Under the Influence). If you could slip your last meal of the day in about an hour before the run it would be perfect. Food, exercise, alcohol, sleep, sounds like an all inclusive holiday!

Chris, Dude! Wow! When I asked for your thoughts I never thought you would invest the time and effort into an explanation like this but I am appreciative that you did. Your information is precise, accurate and explained in the most practical of ways. You have just climbed to the top of my Awesomeness Scale! I already knew you were the smartest guy in the room but once again you have set the bar high. Thanks for raising the bar once again and your willingness to share with us all.

Thats what we can do ... we can invent a quicker AED in our spare time. The time I used one it seemed like it took forever!

Your Truck And Your Patient Crashes....................
DFIB replied to romneyfor2012's topic in Education and Training
I knew it was gonna be more trouble than I wanted to fool with. It can most definetely not be done without a herd of monkeys in the back or at least an extra couple of hands for the ETT guy except I am working on learning how to work a bag with my feet. Do you think it will catch on? -
The virtual dissection table that is displayed in the video looks pretty cool. No formaldahide smell here.

I bet that guy needed a lot more than a blanket to keep warm! -
A friend just sent me this link for an Anatomy Online course given by Stanford University. It appears to be a free tutorial. At first glance it seems legit. It may be of interest to some of us Basic guys. http://www.anatomy-class.org/

I think I know that guy! Not the friend of the friend but the other one!

We are in agreement. I am still a little courious as to if this theory is true or just another EMS legend.

I noted that and purposely ommited any comment on ventilating before compressions. I think it is way cool that they saved this guy. Who would be lucky enough to have a team of stud lifeguards just hanging around when you need them?

Talk about a cold shower!!

There have been suppositions and rumors about the safety of microwaving food because it heats by molecular excitement causing friction on a molecular level. Although the idea of microwaves changing the molecular composition of a compound or altering the DNA of organic compounds has been knocked around for some time now, I have not found any scholarly studies that prove this theory. I find it interesting that folks would believe that heating IV fluids would cause the container to leech toxins into the fluid. If this were true wouldn’t toxins be leeched without the microwave heating? Are IV fluids always stored in a climate controlled environment as to avoid Brownian or other molecular movements? Here is a simplistic link that shows some of the reasoning behind this idea. http://www.snopes.com/science/microwave/plants.asp I think I would like to see cbare chime in on this subject.

I agree that patient dignity is very important but the question stands; do you cover them to prevent heat loss or simply to protect their modesty? I am aware that the result is the similar in varying degrees but also think that the difference between a sheet for modesty and a blanket for temperature control are different both in intent and result .

I am not fond of initiations but I thought this was kind of funny. I wonder if the Newbie got over it. I think it touches the greater questions regarding training programs and hiring practices that allow EMTs to make it into the field without the assurance of their training. http://www.tunesbaby.com/watch/?x=724929 This one made me chuckle.
