  1. Darn, Doc I was beginnig to get all sentimental and teary eyed. He should have known better. All EMT's are taught about supine hypotensive syndrome, eclampsia and left side transport. If the guy was a medic he most definitely should have known. I just thought the importance of positioning would more easily be lost on an EMT than a medic. ERDoc wasn’t just teaching and being nice, he was saving his butt on future calls where proper positioning would make a bigger difference.. Doctors have a pretty strong emotional effect on EMTs especially new ones. After a while a lot of EMTs could begin to feel like the Medics' bell boy. A little encouragement from the top of the food chain works wonders.
  2. That was really cool that you would take the time to explain the rationale to the EMT. I assume it was a EMT because a medic should have known. I am sure that it is a lesson he will not soon forget. It means a lot to us EMT's when a Dr. takes the opportunity to tutor us. Being at the bottom of the EMS food chain it is easy to begin to believe that our care doesn't really make that much of a difference. That you showed him respect by pointing out the error in a teaching enviroment had to have been uplifting. You might have changed the guys’ entire career perspective.

I think you are starting to look like your driver ?!?
  4. I keep my phone on the VMMMMMMM, VMMMMMMMM tone. No one else can hear it, but gives me a bump in my pocket! ;o
  5. Richard - I have the older version Kindle and some of the books have a voice reproduction feature. Most of the new ones do. I just listened to The Hunger Games while on a trip. It has a male voice and a female voice. I of course prefer to hear the female voice in my ear. Does the new version not have this feature?
  6. This argument keeps skipping between the responsibility of the provider to truthfully report and what the medical director decides to do with the Medics' Report. As a provider i will always report in a true and accurate manner. Once the Medical direction, red tape gods, or powers that be get my true and accurate report the course of action is theirs. I cannot and will not be responsible for what others do. Nor will I spend my life worrying if the next guy did the right thing. I am sure that if a patients' family wants the record they can have it. I can only be truthful and accurate. When I am the boss I will make those decisions, in the mean time ..... This whole idea of some utopist panacea of what others should be doing, that I have no control over, makes my head spin. Does anyone know what the law requires as far as patient disclosure?
  7. I can see how these guys were masterful at covering up the situation. They were so good that you are talking about it on the internet. Did they tell anyone beside you?
  8. I have a kindle and it easy to use. Too easy, A very simple reader. There really isn't a word search option and you have to leaf through the entire book to find the page you want. Also I have not found many textbooks that I can download.
  9. We are so much better when the military handles it and just lets everyone else know when it is go time. No chance for Washington to screw it up. There seems to be some speculation as to wither the Iran plot was even the real deal of just a ploy to pull the heat away from the botched Fast and Furious. Darn conspiracy theorist ... ...
  10. HERBIE1 - Do you think that the difference in relationships between Hospitals and EMS is what you mentioned about FF? At some point we have to depend on and trust our partner in some potentially dangerous situations. In hospitals it is every man for himself?
  11. Have you seen the video where they pull Kaddafi from the drain? Everybody is dancing around, giving him a beating while one guy sodomized him with what looks like a knife, all the time crying out Allāh Akbar. Praise God we are torturing and sodomizing a man in the street. I guess I will never understand. http://www.globalpost.com/dispatch/news/regions/middle-east/111024/gaddafi-sodomized-video-gaddafi-sodomy?page=1/
  12. No Kidding! Many of our most dedicated and violent enemies at one point were our allies. Saddling with bad people almost always will end bad. In religion there is no middle ground which makes it a very tough subject. By nature any religious discussion that ends in agreement demands that one party concede his/her views. Most end the way they started, with no change in the opinion of either party. Wasn’t this thread about Iran?
  13. Darn, I had to sign in to read a link that ERDoc posted as well. I guess I am still signed in.Only took a minute. I am glad the measure of a trustworthy professional is no longer wither or not he can take a joke. Some litmus they had. Evolution baby! This scenario reminds me of the abusive husband. I only smack you around because I love you. What a bunch of hooey. I agree that friendly kidding is normal and expected. Everything you described seemed OK. By bullying I was thinking more along the lines of unprofessional jealousy and wither or not there is as much in EMS as in Nursing. The article seems to indicate nurses are pretty tough on each other.
  14. I think it has to do with Justice and mercy and a substitutionary sacrifice. Justice demands a price be paid as all are responsible for their own actions. Mercy provides a means that removes the penalty in exchange for faith. If God is just he has to repay each according to their deeds. If he is merciful he provides a substitute that is qualified (perfect and sinless) to pay the price for the offender. The crucial point is any biblical argument is whether the participants believe in the authority of the writings. In this case the Bible . Wouldn't you think it is quite a stretch to say showing passiveness and love to the Roman torture and murder machine is suicide? Doesn't seem like your priest was very sharp. Edited to insert (perfect and sinless) Are you serious? I am sure the US gave orders for that guy to sodomize Kadafi with a knofe, or shoot him in the head after torturing him in the street. NATO helped find a vicious dictator so he could be removed from power. The psychos on the street killed him. The difference is vast. Is the US different from Iran? You should know better than anyone. In Iran homosexuality is a crime punishable by incarceration, torture and death. Heck yea we are better. Your freedom of sexual preference proves it.
  15. I was reading an article about nurses and workplace bullying. I was astounded that up to 46% had either been the victim of bullying or admitted to being the aggressors and 65% of nurses surveyed had witnessed 1 or more episodes of lateral violence between coworkers. http://www.medscape.com/viewarticle/729474 Is this as common in the pre hospital environment? Would bullying be different than “hazing the new guy”? Does the pre hospital community show more civility and solidarity than hospital environments? Why?
  16. I understand your fears amigo. Many, many people have things in their past that are less than ideal. There are many behavioral conditions that are frequent in the teen years that would not be considered relevant many years later. I would think that a clean criminal record, drug screen and a passed physical would be all they would ask for but that could differ from company to company. The only other advice is only answering the questions they ask specifically. A employer will ask the questions they are interested in having answers to. If they don’t ask it is because they are not interested in knowing. If they ask give them a truthful, specific answer. Don’t hide anything or lie. Don’t volunteer information they don’t ask for. You should be fine.
  17. flameingEMT- Do you really think you could hide tratment information if a medics action killed a patient? In the USA? With all the supervision and oversight? I don't think so.
  18. Sure you didn't mean Ru Paul? Edited to insert smiley face.
  19. AO x 4 would be good. I don't know why MCI tugs at the heartstrings. That is a good question. Many of the decisions I make outside of EMS are oriented around doing "The greater good for the most people". I guess this sentiment bleeds through while on the truck as well. I can't deny the disparity between the rules and what I think is best. I think Dwayne said it more eloquently in one of his post. Possibly it is the human suffering I know is out there. Possibly somewhere inside I want to be a hero. Possibly because in my dreams I am always Batman and never Robin. I simply don’t know. .
  20. That is why I got my CHL. Always thought I would feel dumb to reach the pearly gates having been murdered only for God to say "I made it legal for you to carry and you refused".
  21. The bus scenario makes me wonder, What if we are passing the scene of a school bus MCI and explain what we are seeing to our patient in the ambulance, try and get their consent to stop and render aid. Would patient consent reconcile the disparity between Duty to Act to our patient and the moral desire to help the many? Would this negate neglect?
  22. Dwayne, Wow, That is a wonderful story that must be painful to share. There are some events that are personal and private, events that are “just for me”, until the proper time comes to share. Thank you for using your life experience as an example to help us understand that reporting is not always black and white. In an utopist world well intentioned mistakes would be understood as such. I am assuming the Dr. was an Oncologist. Oncologist have a very low tolerance for BS. Thanks for sharing.
  23. Does it work for herpes too?
  24. Thank you, I am going to have to get busy buying them pretty soon. I have heard so much about Tintinalli I am pretty anxious to get it. .
  25. Race - I have loads of SBC buddies. Good people all. Tyler EMT - There are things that define us. our love for our families, friends and society. Our knowledge and how we use it to earn a living and help others. I think the most defining factor in my life is faith. Anything good I could ever do stems from it. Faith prepares us for life and dying. It sustains us when we feel totally alone. I don’t know who the “big man upstairs” is for you but God is always available to come to our aid. You will never hear me mack on you for mentioning religion or faith. It is too important. I congratulate you for being sensitive to what others might think but willing to say what you feel and believe as well. P.S. Some troll is going to try and give us all the blues for our comments. Just ignore them. They are entitled to not believe just as much as you we are to believe.
