  1. I feel for ya, really. Our Medical Director isn't that bad. He's approachable and always willing to at least listen to you.
  2. That is almost what the law says. SLEEPING TIME AND CERTAIN OTHER ACTIVITIES:An employee who is required to be on duty for less than 24 hours is working even though he/she is permitted to sleep or engage in other personal activities when not busy. An employee required to be on duty for 24 hours or more may agree with the employer to exclude from hours worked bona fide regularly scheduled sleeping periods of not more than 8 hours, provided adequate sleeping facilities are provided by the employer and the employee can usually enjoy an uninterrupted night's sleep. No reduction is permitted unless at least 5 hours of sleep is taken. I highlighted some key words for you. Source; US Department of Labour Employment Standards Administration Wage and Hour Division Fact Sheet #22
  3. You are correct Sir, on both accounts. " Unit XXX, respond to the Zippy mart in reference to a man down forthwith"
  4. I'm sure you would agree, it only takes 30 sec to obtain a BGL. I can get it when I start an IV eliminating an extra "stick" of the patient. I've been watching this thread and finding it hard to add something and be objective, as we are all ALS. I've had EMT-Bs hand me a strip and place it in the glucometer for me and relay the number. Then it can help me with my assessment.
  5. After the last patient we just dropped off a the ED, my new theme song for the day is " Fat bottom Girls" by Queen. Prior to that though, it was " Baton Rouge"- Garth Brooks
  6. You my friend, are getting hosed. Regardless if you get called out after midnight or not, the mere fact that you are there and available to take calls, means you get paid for the entire 24. When I work 24's, I get paid for all of it. Even if we get 0 calls.
  7. firedoc5, wasn't that Billy Idol? " All by Myself"- Eric Carmen
  8. Not really since we are run by the D.O.T. I like the 24hr shifts also. Lately though, I have been working more 12's and quite frankly, I'm learning to like those better.
  9. Ruff brings up a couple of important points. There is the obvious one of negligence. Through sleep deprivation, it is inevitable that errors in patient care will be made. The law firm of Dewey, Screwum and Howe will have a field day with you in court. Secondly, yeah, how professional will your appearance be if you've been working 48hrs straight? If you don't have time to sleep, then you won't have time to shower either.
  10. I don't know if I like this. How safe is it for you, your crew member and your patient? Not to mention the lay public who, unbeknownst to them, I have possibly been up for 48 hours? http://www.defrance.org/artman/publish/article_2012.shtml One of the providers mentions in the article that they had 4hrs sleep in 48. What they don't mention is if that was 4hrs straight or 1/2hr here and there. Not that it matters. I think it is a terrible idea. Quite frankly, I think it is down right dangerous.
  11. " Runnin' with the Devil" - Van Halen
  12. Sorry firedoc5. Tim Hortons ( Timmys for short) is a coffee shop chain in Canada. The best IMHO.
  13. Our medical director is an employee of the hospital. He oversees all EMS for the County and you must pass his oral boards to function. He answers to no one when it comes to the delivery of Medical services to the citizens.
  14. Have you ever seen any really masculine guys order a coffee like this? Not that there's anything wrong with that, I'm just sayin'. Give me my extra large Timmy's double/double anyday. Amen. Didn't we have a discussion not that long ago about this very topic?
  15. Here's one in Reno NV. http://www.remsa-cf.com/ There is a member here from Las Vegas. Hopefully, she'll see your post and respond.
  16. I was thinking about this the other day. Put me down as attending. Hey Dustdevil, I need accommodations!
  17. I glanced at the article on Friday and couldn't get back to it. I will read it tomorrow and post something.
  18. Try this. http://students.med.nyu.edu/erclub/ekghome.html Also, the Dubin book has an accompanying website.
  19. I didn't. I'm saying if it still effects someone after 3 years, and being a teenager, they shouldn't be on an ambulance period. Don't get so defensive.
  20. Maybe, just maybe, this is one of the reasons for not having teenagers on the ambulance. Asysin2leads is just emphasizing the fact that we as adults and EMS in general have to deal with this sort of thing. While it isn't pleasant, it is the job. If you can't handle it, find another career path while they're still young enough to do it. There was a seasoned medic of 10 years in the next County that is an acquaintance of mine. He ran 3 pedi codes in 2 weeks and turned in his stuff. He couldn't deal with it anymore. How can we expect teenagers to cope with it?
  21. "This is the song that never ends" The Muppets BTW, good call on the Bobby Goldsboro Richard =D>
