Calling All Old Farts --- Let's Reminisce Shall We ?
island emt replied to mikeymedic1984's topic in General EMS Discussion
I have a hand suction device that was basically a tire pump looking device with a metal canister to collect the spooge. I remember when we got radio's installed so we didn't have to go to use a payphone to call in and get our next dispatch. Boss even painted radio dispatched on the sides of the Meteor miller caddy ambulances. He also owned the local Funeral home. How many of the kids today have ever even used a payphone? -
New Jersey Reciprocity (EMT-P) HELP

As screwed up as NJ is there must be someone in the state EMS office that has a clue and can answer your questions. That or drive over to the garbage state and talk to the person responsible for hiring per diems at the hospital close by to queens. -
Welcome to the city Welcome to the world of reality, Do you have any experience in interacting with people you don't know? Often times getting out and actually doing hands on emergency care is much different from many other skillsets. When socialization is lacking it can be a hard barrier to break down. This is not one of those things that can be done by texting . At what point do you freeze? When meeting & greeting ?, Or when having to let your brain take over with what you have been trained to do in your assessment.

I'm a little confused as to what job title you are hoping to get hired for???? An industrial safety engineer position or a generalized health officer working in remote settings? There are medics working in the oil patch and offshore that have an expanded scope and generally are the sole source responder in these settings. They also do hearing testing , general physicals and drug / alcohol testing, among other duties. All depends on what you are looking to do in your new career.

respect of your peers and other healthcare professionals that you interact with is a valid thing. For the Dr's you work under to have respect in your abilities and knowledge to provide proper care without being in a " mother may I " situation . This has changed greatly over the decades. It was originally a need to call in for a consult on just about every single part of the decision making process and to proceed with interventions as ordered. Today we are very autonomous by comparrison. Why?? Because of the respect we have earned .

Seems that this is not the first time mr dirtbag has done this. Mrs dirtbag is all over the news screaming about all the fancy cars and expensive homes mr dirtbag has given away in the past paying off other former minority bimbo's he's slept with. Just another wealthy loser that can't keep his pants zipped. -

A lot of folks experience this when first starting out in EMS. Unfortunately EMT class is not good at preparing newbies for the reality of what we deal with on a daily basis. It is more concerned about getting students to pass the exams, than real life learning. I've always said it takes the average newbie a couple years to find their way and get comfortable with what we do for a profession. by then you get exposed to just about everything we deal with. The DOA: no biggie, beyond anyones help. Don't let them bother you as you will see a lot of them in your career. Be supportive to the family members and move on to the next call where you might make a difference. Everyone learns at a different pace and we all make mistakes. Just learn from them and don't repeat them. Good luck, we are here for you to vent to. -

He hires black players because he wants to win and make more $$$$ by filling the seats and selling more team crap at exorbitant prices. This is true of all sports leagues, whether it is the NFL, NBL, NHL , NBA or Motorsports. It is ALL about making money , nothing more. -

this guy is a tyrant, racist and bigot, BUT he had a girlfriend on the side who is/was a minority. The same class of folks he threw out of rental properties, and the same folks he wants to make money on the backs of without having to be seen socializing with. It was OK to get sex from a minority but did she have to be seen in public with them? Like it or not he is a very wealthy dirtbag who will get away with it because he's filthy rich. The NBA has to take this stance as they can't survive, [ read make millions of $$$$] without the minority players playing a game for millions of dollars per year. Do you see the trend here ?? People PLAYING a game and all are making millions $$$$$$$$$ per year , while those that slave away saving lives and wiping butts get squat. -

I've been told the street value of prescription narcs is $1.00 per milligram, while a 3 gram bag of heroin is less than $20.00 & as ugly has noted ,it is much purer content than in the past with a marked increase in OD deaths and near misses. State of Maine legislature passed a new law today allowing family members of abusers and LEO's & FF's to carry Narcan IN as a means of saving OD deaths. -

what the LEO's and now unfortunately" you" have on your hands is a ticking time bomb. He will be having severe withdrawal symptoms soon if he is shooting up with that frequency. I'd be curious what his baseline ETOH level is? on top of all the narcotics he has been using with the ETOH chaser. He is getting small dose , high level concentration of ETOH 8-10 x /day so toxicity levels must have "normalized in his system by now after 2 years +/- of abuse. Does the extended release agent in the Oxy dissolve faster/ better in alcohol solvent compared to water / stomach fluids???? Anecdotally in a hipaa safe world: There is a gent we know that is beyond alcoholic status. He wakes up and starts his day with a 20 oz beer fresh from the tap in his fridge. His yard contains dozens of empty full size kegs. His normal everyday functioning baseline is in excess of a 250 BAC. he has been as high as a 685 BAC and still been conscious and walking. Beer is consumed on an all day basis as some might drink water or coffee, until it is dark and time to go unconscious. 7 Days a week that is the routine. Recently he had to go to hospital for some internal organ malfunction[ imagine that ] without his almost continuous infusion of ETOH he went into withdrawal sequence within 8 hours. violent shakes , hallucinations, bugs crawling on him, NVD the whole drill. Can't say it has been seen in this area, but then who really knows what the addicts are doing to get their fix. We had a severe outbreak of opiod use/abuse a few years ago , that was scary. everyone & their mother had discovered oxy contin/codone by prescription, & the DR's were handing them out like breath mints at a church social.. we doubled the amount of Narcan we carried on the truck.. Now it is heroin that is strong as it is readily available and at low cost compared to prescription meds on the street. -
take a visit to your local fishing tackle store. There are a myriad of trays and boxes for fishing equipment that are especially suited for IV catheters and because they don't say EMS on them they are low cost.

A Newfie went hunting one day in Ontario and bagged three ducks. He put them in the bed of his pickup truck and was about to drive home when he was confronted by an ornery game warden who didn't like Newfies. The game warden ordered the Newfie to show his hunting license, and the Newfie pulled out a valid Ontario hunting license. The game warden looked at the license, then reached over and picked up one of the ducks, sniffed its butt, and said, "This duck ain't from Ontario. This is a Quebec duck. You got a Quebec huntin' license, boy?" The Newfie reached into his wallet and produced a Quebec hunting license. The game warden looked at it, then reached over and grabbed the second duck, sniffed its butt, and said "This ain't no Quebec duck. This duck's from Manitoba. You got a Manitoba license?" The Newfie reached into his wallet and produced a Manitoba hunting license. The warden then reached over and picked up the third duck, sniffed its butt, and said, "This ain't no Ontario duck. This here duck's from Nova Scotia. You got a Nova Scotia huntin' license?" Again the Newfie reached into his wallet and brought out a Nova Scotia hunting license. The game warden was extremely frustrated at this point, and he yelled at the Newfie "Just where the hell are you from?" The Newfie turned around, bent over, dropped his pants, and said, "You tell me, you're the expert." -

here's a few for the two of you: -A newfie was having a hard time attracting women at the beach, so he decided to ask his friend the lifeguard for advice. "It's dem big baggy swimming trunks, my son. Dey're years outta style. Yer best bet is to grab yeself a pair of Speedos--about two sizes too small, and drop a fist-sized potato down inside 'em. I'm telling ye, man.. .ye'll have all de babes ye wants!" The following weekend, the newfie hit the beach with his new Speedos and his fist-sized potato. Everybody he walked past immediately covered their faces and started gagging. The newfie went back to the lifeguard and said, "I did what ye said, but it's sitll not working." "Lard-Tunderin' Jeezus b'y!" said lifeguard, "the potato goes in the front!" -Two newfies are in a car enjoying a bottle of black horse, when a cop pulls them over. The newfie in the passenger seat says "He's got us now by, what are we gonna do?" The driver says they have nothing to worry about and tells him to follow his lead and say nothing. The driver peals the lable off the bottle of beer, licks the back of it, sticks it to his forehead, and puts the bottle under his seat--the passenger follows suit. The police officer approaches the drivers window and asks for his licence and registration. As the driver gives the officer his info the officer asks whether he or the passenger had been drinking at all that night, at which point the driver points to his forehead and responds, "Oh no sir, we's on da patch ya see!". -A newfie's wife passed away and he called 911. The 911 operator told him that they would send someone over right away and asked him where he lived. "At the end of Eucalyptus Drive," the newfie told her. The operator asked, "Could you please spell that for me?" After a long pause, the newfie said, "How 'bout if I drag her over to Oak Street and you pick her up there?" -

you just don't understand Newfie jokes Richard. You need to get out & try some screech at least once in your life . -
Both: There are places where EMS is hospital based & when not out on calls the EMS crew works in the Emergency department. There are other places that have Medics working alongside the staff RN's in emergency depts. Some hospitals use them as glorified bed changers , while others have them working to the full level of their scope of practice.

I think we've ALL had a patient that as soon as we make contact , You just know they are having the "big one". They present with the death pallor and you don't need any equipment other than the mark 1 eyeball to tell they are circling the drain or shortly will be.
