  1. There was a movement years ago to give preloaded narcan to drug users and their family/ friends. It was being handed out along with a needle exchange program. Personally: I don't know how much harm nasal narcan could cause when dealing with OD's that are on the edge of death. Yes I understand all the risks and dangers of bring them up to fast or too far, but when the options are more dead folks who might have been saved??????? My personal feeling is give them all the heroin they can smoke ,snort , inject , or shove up their arse. Cleans up the gene pool . I know thats not PC , but what are ya going to do. Problem is that folks are switching to heroin because it's cheaper and easier to get your hands on than other pharmaceuticals that are commonly abused. stop the cartels that are bringing it into the country and solve the problem. I know too simplistic . Get serious about closing the borders completely and stop the afghani's and others who hate us from making billions suppling the dope. My Brother in law was murdered by an afghan intelligence officer because he was investigating afghan politicians high up in the govt food chain who are engaged in the drug trade. Besides if we didn't have drug users arrested who would fill our prison systems??????
  2. Since you title say AGAIN : I'm guessing this is at least your second attempt at the test. What did you do different after your last fail to improve your test skills? Did you take any of the online reviews and practice exams? Did you review your coursework? You might want to consider a refresher course before using your third strike at testing. Needs some answers to help understand where you are coming up short. As Mike pointed out above you obviously were in such a low percentage of correct answers that the adaptive test knew you couldn't be successful, no matter how many questions it gave you. Thats how the new testing model works.
  3. In 40 plus years in this business , I've seen one femoral artery bleed. motorcycle versus guardrail. Of course he also had a traumatic amputation of the leg so he had many more issues than just the femoral bleed which was controlled easily with a pressure dressing due to the shearing method of amputation that all but sealed of the vessels. He also had a traumatic chest trauma which caused a bilateral pneumothorax's and collapsed lung along with cardiac contusions . Now you see why knowledge of anatomy & physiology along with the other sciences are important education to have.
  4. Chris: as someone who's old enough to be his grandfather and spent many decades as a prehospital provider, I have been biting my tongue trying hard not to swat this child on the behind. He asked for advice about what education courses were needed to become a Paramedic . Then he told us he is not interested in taking those courses , because he doesn't need them to go to college and become a "paramedic" Then he came out & told us as a non licensed provider he is carrying a trauma bag that surpases what many carry on an ambulance, & tried to justify it by what if's. Yes he is 16 and a junior in high school. He wants to be the hero his father was without putting in the work to be one. I figure his next thread will be how many flashing lights he can put on his car once he's old enough to drive.
  5. whackeritus at it's finest. Same type that wears the T shirt with "we fight what you fear" on the back

  7. Seems that young Caleb must have found a red cape in the closet and is going to save the world without doing the homework required. YAY
  8. There You go folks::: Proof that It's not just New Jersey that has a supply of whackers As a 16 yo you should be doing your home work and growing up instead of playing on the computer with pipe dreams.
  9. It's all relative to how big a place is when a 25 mile ride to the nearest gas station or a hour & 1/2 trip to a large hospital is the norm. Have friends up in the county that are a two hour plus trip to a grocery store each way .3 hours to a hospital. But no matter where you are you had more info than I did on CO jobs
  10. Welcome to the city: Kate is in your area.[scubanurse] She might have some ideas on openings.
  11. Welcome to the City: every class has someone who is older and street smart. The kids look to you for answers to life that they have not lived.
  12. Wow Mike: fall asleep on the couch in the Dr's lounge last night. got up with a case of Oscar the grouch.
  13. By the way DOC: Great presentation to make us all dust off the cobwebs
  14. Welcome to the city.
  15. A couple years ago had a very close friend of our family who was entered into hospice care and given less than 2 months to live. He was a retired 3 star Air Force general who had flown fighters in Korea & Vietnam and had been a POW for a time. The stories he shared and the wisdom he gave to us all was an incredible thing. He & his wife were long time friends and customers of ours. he surprised all the doctors and lasted for 6 months longer than they had guessed. We visited with them regularly and as he started to get weaker we worked with the hospice folks to get him the assistance they needed, from a hospital bed to support counseling for her. As the time approached and we were down to a few days, we sat and talked about his wishes for the family and how things would happen. At the last day, we knew his time was near and had his wife call all the kids & grandkids to come say goodbye to gramps. He stayed with us for another 36 hours until his grandson got here and within 10 minutes of his arrival took his last couple of breaths and peacefully passed. during that time we all told stories and shared our memories about him and with him. They all knew the time was coming and tears were shed , but they were all thankful for the opportunity to say goodbye.
  16. You will need Math, Anatomy & physiology , Chemistry and English as requisites for any Paramedic college degree program.
  17. I know this may be hard to understand with your limited exposure to these types of calls. But sometime the biggest thing we can do in this situation is be there for family members and support them. Hospice care has become more of the normal than it used to be , so we have many more terminal patients going home for their final days or weeks instead of being in a cold "sterile " hospital room away from their home environments. Is there a hospice group in your area? If so they might have some literature and maybe even CEH classes to help you understand the process. As far as your boyfriend & his family not showing a lot of emotion : Everyone has a different process. Maybe they had all had many discussions of what to expect and knew that this was coming soon. They had already adjusted to this fact and were prepared. You will encounter some really incredible older folks over your career as they meet the end of their lives. Just a part of life that we all will end up with. Good luck Ed
  18. Demers makes a very nice quality ambulance up in Quebec. They are a small builder with a great reputation in the northeast. As far as the sprinter chassis, I know one company here that bought several of them 6-8 years ago and were very impressed with the roomy cab and especially the fuel mileage from them. more than double what their other rigs were getting. As far as maintenance: they are a mercedes benz chassis , so parts are not inexpensive.
  19. What part of this is bothering you? "It was peaceful, and calm, and she went surrounded by family. But I was uncomfortable the whole time. Because I knew things they didn't. I saw things they didn't. Smelled, heard, felt... you get the picture." Death is a natural process and it sounds like this lady had a fairly easy one. Did it bother you because you were being clinical and not emotional? Or because the family was not being emotional? Is this the first time you have been exposed to life slowly slipping away instead of fast violent painful death?
  20. Never too old to learn new information. My only experience with K-2 / spice was a couple of "old hippies" in their 50's who thought it would be fun to mix some in with the christmas cookies. Of course they only handed those cookies out to the "adults" after the kids had gone to bed. 2 Hours later we have a bunch of paranoid trippin old hippies laying on the floor because the word was spinning & they were heaving. weird cardiac rhythms, shakes and hallucinations.
  21. OK Doc: I know what K-2 is and that it's synthetic derivative of drugs that mimic canniboids . How did smoking that cause the rhabdo & compartment syndrome ?????
  22. These land pumpkins seem to continue their bloodlines without any skill put into it. You need to remember that it takes absolutely no training or knowledge to reproduce future generations of progeny. How would walmart survive without them??
  23. OK : going back to his IV drug use. When he was shooting up ,Where was he injecting? Necrosis from injecting in his lower extremity?? Venous infection causing the cardiac issues? Myocardium inflammation? The pain in the butt is throwing a curveball here doc ???????
  24. I worked 20 years at a large motorsports venue that hosted all sorts of racing event. AMA, SCCA , Indycar, and of course the twice a year redneck rodeo known as NASCAR. The things we saw and had to deal with were nothing short of ridiculous. The bikers couldn't hold a candle to the nascar fans & their budweiser fueled stupidity. We averaged 600-1000 pt's over the course of the week from the grandstands and camping areas and a dozen or so from drivers & crew. We decided that adding chlorine to the gene pool was our only hope for salvation. That & running a spay/ neuter clinic . We used to run a high BAC contest: the crew that brought the highest level of living drunk to the hospital won the pot. anything under 500 wasn't even in the top twenty five
  25. Whats his liver feel like on palpation?? IV drug user ???????? Hepatitis????
