  3. Rambling , rambling rambling, Keep the doggies rambling. :-}
  4. Cab hacks make better pay also. They don't have to lift & carry fat customers : : : only their luggage Their work vehicle is no uglier than ours
  5. sounds like you have a good head on your shoulders and it's screwed on straight. Let us know how the visit turns out.
  6. + 100 for that great post Clutzy Girl That may be the best post I've read all year. Good to hear from you
  7. I thought everyone knew why left lateral recumbent position in the ambulance::: So the pt pukes all over the medic in the back.
  8. Depends on your location. Some places EMT's are a dime a dozen as the mills turn out dozens every semester. Many places have limited use for Basic EMT's as they are limited in their scope of practice and beyond transport services most want advanced level providers.
  9. If you are not in physical condition to do the police academy :: then you are not in condition to be a medic, swat or otherwise. Get healthy and in condition then spend your time getting street experience . Once you have years of experience then apply to join a tactical team.
  10. nothing about 400 lb whales reproducing interests me at all..............
  11. Considering your current location Michael, it may be possible to see a much higher volume of really critical patients and that would explain somewhat higher IO usage. Plus you have several major medical centers in the area that are known worldwide.
  12. Did the EZ-IO sales folks just go through the area recently with their free drill with the purchase of the needles offer by chance?? That % seems extremely high to me. In the past 5 years, I'd guess i went IO 3 or 4 times. They were all in dead folks in arrest situations for acls meds where we didn't want to waste time trying to bring up a collapsed vein. Going back a decade when we worked at a motor racing venue where we had a lot of serious trauma calls and were using the fast one IO we used them rarely , only in case of really serious multi system traumatic injuries in life or death situations.
  13. Cadeuces: Please keep the fire going in your brain for the Medical field. Don't get discouraged by roadblocks thrown in your way at a young age. I was 16 when I first got started with advanced first aid and took CPR course, then moved on to LAA [ licensed ambulance attendant ] them EMT=B, them EMT-I. Now 4 + decades later retirement is coming soon :-} Personally I would recommend either a coursework in RN or PA for better pay, better benefits and a lot less lifting in all extremes of weather. My wife is a BSN and an EMT-I. the RN pay is way better and while working in a hospital can be mundane , the climate conditions are controlled.
  14. At my age :: I carry as little as possible. I figure to have carried a few hundred tons of Patients over the decades.
  15. You sound like the kind of partner that would get left behind at the ER trying to figure out how to explain to the boss your driving skills.
  16. The last Basic class my wife taught ended up at 180 classroom hours & 36 ride along and ER time hours . Pass rate of 98% with all but one getting licensed.
  17. The national curriculum for EMT-B is 150 hours didactic and throw in between 20-40 additional hours in some classes for hands on training days.depending on the instructor. They usually run 2 nights / week for 4-4 hrs and a few 8 hr Saturdays for the practical evolutions.
  18. thats just an average run of the mill EMT-Basic class. 150 hrs Accelerated ones are done in two weeks or less.
  19. many of you here are not old enough to remember the gasser ambulances of the 70's & 80's. They were known for vapor locking and catching fire. The Ford 460 was a great engine as long as it was running right, they could spin the tires on a 1 ton fully loaded Yes the current design fuel injected gassers are better than those of the old days. Diesels are known for lasting longer with an overall lower cost per mile and reliability. That changed about 8 years ago when ford and IH got in a pissin contest over the warrantee issues with the 6.0 liter Ford/ Navistar engine. At that point the ford E series chassis was almost 86% of the ambulance market and it has gone down ever since.
  20. Did we ever figure out if she had been double dosed at the facility ??? or was she just to the point of too much prescribed narc on board that started this whole episode of events? Great way to teach and make us use our brains a little Doc
  21. I wasn't second guessing you Mobes. Just commenting on how far out in the sticks you are. We start worrying if our patients get to the hour mark while still boarded. unfortunately they now have decided that All elderly fall patients don't meet the selective criteria & must be boarded. . We also have selective spinal immobilization protocol that started 15 years ago with the wilderness medicine folks and later involved the NEXUS study. One of the authors was our state medical director at the time.
  22. 4 hours on a board?????
  23. Anyone look at her feet for a nice plump vein , or an EJ ??? If those are out then it's probably time to think about a central line since you ER docs are so talented. :-}
  24. Make the EMS crew deal with the agitated puking PT for the next 4 hours?????? Then possibly hand them a days detention to relearn not to be stupid.
