Congrats on a job well done.

Some of you may know Elvis medic from another website. He was there on duty working. He's been heard from & is OK. Prayers go out to all those involved and will wait for further news before saying anything else.

I know several folks who invested in stock and lost their collective assets because of early reports on the studies on polyheme and biopure. Granted it will be a golden cash cow for the researchers that do finally create a product to replace whole blood.

A new concept to me also. Thats why I asked.

Just my personal observations over the decades Doc. we had a pt that could store a two pack of twinkies in each side of her belly rolls, just in case she got stranded away from her supply system. We're on the way to the hospital one night , I'm on the phone to the ER at the front of the box & look up::: she's opening a slightly squashed package of twinkies. Now all she had on was a mumu [translates into many yards of flowery cloth shaped into a tent] and when asked where she got them , she lifted up a roll and showed me. The smell was enough to make me hurl.

always better to ask for forgiveness after the fact Doc :-} -
using that chart a 5'9" person at 200 lbs is an obese 30 bmi. A Dr. told my wife she was obese at 5'6" & 115 lbs according to her BMI . She's skin & bones. I'm talking the ones that make the 750 pound capacity power stretcher groan, that the XL straps can barely be fastened around by compressing some of the jello rolls. Think women of whalemart obese.

try different types of ear muffins for a better seal to your ears. the standard round tips are not a one size fits all.

Dwayne: I don't consider a person OBESE until their fat rolls have Fat rolls. Not talking the rolls you can hide a twinkie in :: the kind of fat rolls where they lose their Chihuahua in. Someone who can lose 150 0r 200 pounds and still be obese. When a Pt's calfs are bigger than my waist, they are obese.

I can hear just as well in the back of the truck wit a $30 sprague as with my wife's master cardio II Littman. It's an acquired skill thats takes time to learn. When you start releasing the air from the cuff, palpate at the wrist and listen at the same time. It may be a right brain skill that only lefties can do though:::

layers of fat dampen sounds and make pretty much all procedure more difficult. Your optimum choice is to place the diaphragm just firmly enough to be able to hear the low resonance sounds. background noise such as from the diesel engine make it that much harder to pick up the rumble your trying to hear.

Any medics turned RN's out there? Frustrated.
island emt replied to Riblett's topic in Burnout, Stress, & Health
Riblet: My wife went from having a masters in special education and a 20 year back ground as a teacher, along with being an EMT and Intermediate for 25 years to nursing school. She went to a highly regarded hospital based nursing school for their ADN program that is very competitive to get accepted into. She found some of the "old battle ax instructors" that had the attitude, and who spent a large percentage of their time demeaning other professions. Many of them had been "instructors for decades and came from the old school way of doing things. She was lucky in having an advisor that understood she wasn't about to buy into the BS line and having spent 20 yrs as a teacher & in EMS she had more experience and education than the "instructors". Her advice was to do the work and get through the semester, put it behind her, and move forward. My wife put up with it and ended up graduating with a 3.9 GPA. That was 7 years ago. She has since gone on and completed her BSN with honors. My advice to you is keep your head on straight and keep looking forward to your ultimate goals. Don't let the pettiness derail your plans. Yes they had to wear the silly white scrub dresses and the little "old school" dixie cup nursing hat during their clinicals, It's just tradition. Pants were not allowed. Now that she's an RN the hospital she works at has a much more liberal interpretation of what dress code is. tonight she went to work with scrubs with labradors puppies on them. -
Just off the top of my head: Lets check BG 70 yo morbidly obese,CHF, COPD gotta be diabetic also. Any hx of afib.? blood thinners? what meds is she on and why? What is she being rehabbed from? really quality healthcare facility " Staff says they think she was okay yesterday, but they're not sure." How long has she been gorked without them noticing? Pupils? responsive to light & accommodation? If your having that much trouble palpating a pulse better get a long IV catheter and get ready to go fishing for peripheral access or look to see if you can get a feel for the EJ. Call for the hose apes for lifting Get the bariatric truck enroute. Hey Mobey: what do you think of the X series????? Inquiring minds want to know. How about a review in another thread

First thing: Sit Shamu up and put her on some O's Then do your assessment and send someone to track down her medical records. Then call for a Hoyer crane to put her on your oversized stretcher. Hope the dump has an elevator big enough to safely take shamu to the ground floor.

My apologies for thinking you were young. From one old fart to another: You probably have not got the recovery potential in your back to continue in EMS. As I approach 58 this year with 40 + years in EMS, & retirement coming soon, my back is letting me know every day that it is no longer young. This is a very strenuous career for your back and the customers are NOT getting any lighter. In a population where 300 pounders are common and 4-500 pounders are becoming that way, how do you want to spend your retirement years? Even with the power lift stretchers with their 500 & 750 pound rating they groan a little with some patients. Reality is: an EMT or Paramedic with a bad back is a liability for a company to hire and even though many of us have acquired back problems because of the job it would be hard to get through a hiring physical with the conditions you have.

Fourth attempt at NREMT....ugghh
island emt replied to ColinW's topic in NREMT - National Registry of EMT's
From anecdotal observations of students taking the adaptive testing, It seems that YES you need to know the subject matter, & you need to read carefully the questions and answer choices offered. Where some students run into issues is when they try and read into the questions or look for an answer that fits what they think it should be. We all know that multiple choice questions are sometimes written in a way to partially confuse you, and can have several answer choices that are almost correct. Picking the correct answer they want is sometimes elusive and may not be what the student is taught given the question. We tell students not to over analyze the questions and to go with the most logical after reading all the answers, -
I'm guessing that since you said you missed spring semester, you are young & in school. The fall you had has nothing to do with your underlying osteoporosis. The problem is long term the stresses subjected on your spine in this business will certainly cause more issues down the road. Back problems are oe of the leading reasons for EMS providers to either retire of move to a less strenuous employment. Talk to your DR and ask him/her what they think about long term repetitive lifting carrying of heavy weights including up & down stairs, and over uneven terrain.
