  1. Excellent work Mari: Make an appointment to talk with the schools financial aid office and find out if there is a scholarship you can get for the Paramedicine program. Often times there are ways of getting assistance in paying for the program costs or at least covering part of it. If you can get that then the squad would have to pick up a smaller portion of the cost. We do that here in exchange for a commitment to provide service for a couple years as a way of paying back our investment. If you are older & returning to the workforce their are pell grants & other funding sources available. Not meaning to say you are old, you just come across as mature.
  2. What we do when teaching is to write the names of all the bones on little tags with a string on them. Then we lay out our 5 ft 2 dimensional skeleton that we got at a close out at the bookstore for ten $$ we have the students reach into the pile and pull a bone tag and place it on the proper bone on the skeleton. Helps to reinforce the placement. Start with the major long bones and then move to the rest of the extremities and on to the thoracic structure.
  3. don't hold back Clutzy: It's been a while since we had your wit ! I'm not saying if it's coming on the ambulance we can't take a look see. I'm talking about in their home or in their car.
  4. The odds of finding any of them still working in the field from 1984 are slim. I would start with the local police to see who handled the call and go from there. You have slim odds but it's worth a try.
  5. It was sub zero with 40 mph winds last week. Yesterday is the first time in 10 days it got above freezing.
  6. Actually I did serve in uniform from 1972- 88, and my brother in law wore the maroon beanie. He was killed in Afghanistan last year. He would have never been as disrespectful as you have been here. Go back and read the comment that got your knickers in a bunch. Then start over.
  7. he's young enough to be a grandkid :-}
  8. Hi Tami:glad you found us. I still go to the village , but it's like having conversations with my self some weeks. A lot of us have been old timers on both of these sites for many years. Glad to hear you are still your stubborn self and keeping the dino attitude we loved so much. It's been pretty friggin cold here for the past ten days also. Think Kat left the freezer door open again. Today it's 53 and raining so can't complain. Sending a big Huggggg your way from Maine.
  9. as a supervisor you should know better. As you get older and move up the food chain , you will understand why.
  10. who knew there were good looking women in NJ
  11. another thing I've noticed in testing EMT-B & I classes is: They are teaching to pass the nr exam, instead of teaching them to be clinicians. I can't tell you how many come through with all their cute little acronyms that the don't have a clue what they mean in reality/ If I hear a student spout off the DECAPBTLS at the trauma assessment station line one more time, I'm going to go postal. It would be fine if they understood what it stands for, but they don't get taught that part of the equation.
  12. Over the course of 4 decades in EMS, I've been kicked, punched, bit, spit on , puked on , had bullets come down a hallway about a foot over our heads and had shots fired at our ambulance. It does happen when you least expect it. The shooting occurred after 4 cops had entered the apartment ahead of us responding for a stabbing. They cleared us in. While walking down a long hallway a closet door at the end opened with a gangbanger holding a mac10. He proceeded to empty the large capacity magazine over our heads . Only thing that saved my partner & I was the fact that the closest cop knocked us down in his scramble to get out of the way. That & the fact that the banger with the gun didn't know how to control the muzzle climb. So YES it does happen and fairly often. New years eve , and a couple select ethnic holidays , we would all take cover under the overpasses as the boyz in the hood would randomly fire up into the air. What goes up must come down and lots of folks were struck by bullets returning back to earth. Still enough force to kill a person if struck in the head. Boy am I glad to be out of the big city! don't miss it one bit. spelling correction
  13. TIMEOUT called in the sandbox.
  14. fried with back bacon:: Poached are for poofters
  15. Welcome to the city Dave: you make a couple of very good points in your first post. yes there is always a demand for entry level EMT's. As soon as folks figure out how much work is required for little pay, they tend to go elsewhere and make the same money for a lot less work. I would wager a guess that less than 10 % survive to make it to 5 years in the field. This is from someone who has 40+ years in EMS. I just don't know when to retire.
  16. Besides which he owns the company and all the trucks
  17. An excellent first post to boot !
  18. Wilson: maybe if you actually read what Richard wrote you wouldn't spout off in an uneducated way. He stated that while PR is not a state it is an American territory and not a third world nation state. Just sayin! Maybe your red beanie is just a little too tight.
  19. If you don't get past the state review, you will not be licensed so you cannot get hired. Here you fill out the paperwork prior to starting the EMT_B class. I've had students pulled from class by the state due to prior history that would not allow them to be licensed.
  20. An Arson conviction is an Arson conviction. Dosen't matter whether it was a trash can or your neighbors cat you set on fire. At the very least in most states any criminal convictions will get a review at the state office of EMS and investigations board before allowing licensing. That includes motor vehicle infractions and juvie crime.
  21. Iowa is a lot more lenient than most states.
  22. As I said above: In this state and several others I've worked in, a person with a diagnosis of Epilepsy or a seizure disorder cannot hold a driver license . Can't hold a commercial drivers license either. PS I don't make the laws
  23. I'd be sure to include the jaywalking ticket on my application with all the details. It will give the reviewers a good laugh. Also shows you are not hiding anything. Nah who am I kidding::: It will give them a good laugh.
  24. future EMT student??? That would lead me to believe living in mommy's basement and going to high school.
