what should i know about the life of an emt?
island emt replied to rtjackson's topic in Meet and Greet
Since you already will have a degree. Look into a 2 yr degree iRN. You will be able to travel and find work just about anywhere. The pay will be better , the benefits will be better & the work is a little less strenuous . -
Interviews/dropping off applications
island emt replied to beancurd's topic in General EMS Discussion
All depends on whether you are applying at a small service , a municipal entity, or a big corporate entity A small service might have a manager present to interview you , but usually they have a scheduled time for doing interviews. Municipal or corporate entities the process usually starts in human resources and then get passed along to management for the interview process. You should never go to the service dressed like a slob even if you are just dropping off your application, Dress professionally and look the part of trying to get employed. This is true in any business. I watched a youth show up at a restaurant applying for a job, He had on tattered jeans and a t-shirt with satanic logos on it. Do you think his app went in the round file?? -

I played Footie while I was there with the townies team. That is one brutal sport. We just figured the flies were added protein ::: and a good reason to drink more beer to wash them down.

Craig: KB & swan lager were the two that we had available to us out in Exmouth WA. Back then very few folks even in Oz knew where it was. Now it's a world class diving resort I did try many other wonderful brews when on holiday in Perth. The bugs & spiders just became part of daily life when you got to know them. The flies however were quite tasty for 5 months a year. they were everywhere. couldn't get in a meal without eating a few.

Another of the early ambulance business founders has left this life. Rest in Peace Vernon. Trevor take care of yourself & your family Ed -
When I was stationed in Western Australia, the incoming staff were given two days of intro to OZ. The bugs spiders & snake lectures basically stated that all but a couple of the snakes were poisonous or deadly, many of the spiders have nasty venom and so did many of the bugs. Stay away from them. Then there were the dangers of the different species in the ocean from great whites to sea snakes and pufferfish. The second day was spent teaching us about the grate Aussie beers and how they were much stronger than we yanks were used to. there was a test on the beers I preferred Swan lager or KB

Hold their wrist as in taking pulse. That will keep them from altering their resp rate . If they know your counting chest rise they won't breath normally.

Well said systemet: thats what led me to ask about the core temp. Hypothermia is a very under diagnosed illness . It is easy to overlook it and the subtle signs of the process. after having been bit on the arse a few times, we learned to be highly suspect when things just don't seem to fit the picture. A 65 degree day can give you a severely hypothermic Pt. even though they are dressed appropriately. and not out in the air. To you or I it seems like a day to go for a nice walk to the beach. Decreased peripheral circulation and lack of physical activity add to the problem and begin the cascade effect. I purchased a hypothermic thermometer for just this reason.

My only problem with boobage on calls is I get the chest pain pt with a 52 xl. [extra long] in a mumu. Says in my nicest pleading voice :: Excuse me Mam. Could you help me out and throw those up over your shoulder while I pit these little stickers on???? Thinks back to the old Burger King motto:: takes two hands to handle a whopper. My Bad

Every time a SHEEP walks by and shakes her stuff DAAAAADDDY!

You grab you tympanic thermometer, put the plastic cap on and take his temperature. The thermometer gives you an error, says the cap isn't on. You try again, get the same error, try one more time, same error. So you can not get a temp at this time! Thats why you shouldn't have a cheap thermometer on the truck. Those cheapie's won't function when they get a few degrees outside of normal range. We have the same units as the hospitals use. Possible hypothermia due to low circulation , probably poor nutrition, severe depression over the loss of his mother, underlying health problems. In the clinical setting they call it failure to thrive.

I've had a couple partners it might have been helpful to have on the truck for.

What is his core temp ???

You're not far up the road from me. Might run into you at the hospitals in Brunswick.

Bulged disc. maybe need a career change. Help!
island emt replied to eque_price's topic in Burnout, Stress, & Health
The best advice is to follow YOUR doctors advise , not the companies workers comp doc. Only time will tell if you might be able to return to actively working as a Paramedic for an additional 17 years. Back surgery is improving all the time and the results are sometimes miraculous. Make sure to get a second opinion before letting anyone start cutting on your back. -
The fast one is a medieval looking device that is forced into the sternum. Very brutal looking , but effective. The Pt had better be unconcious. if not they will be when they see you coming at them with it. The B.I.G. is the gun that effectively shoots the needle into the bone . EZ IO is the drill which in my personal opinion & experience is the easiest to use and be sure that you will get it correctly placed. different size and length needles. Our protocols allow the tibia or humorous for placement.

Welcome. You are just beginning a long journey through life in EMS,use the time wisely to learn every day and never stop improving your knowledge. All of what Mike said + read and learn your protocol book. Know it inside & out . Listen to what the other members of your crew have to say and how they do things. Hopefully you will have an experienced partner to learn the street smarts part of the job. Take the State AVOC course Where in Maine are you?

When I was stationed in Western Australia a LONG time ago, The mining companies up on the north west coast, had onsite medical staff that basically rotated in & out on a 30 day basis. They had a mobile home that included quarters on one end and an office / clinic on the other. The medics did all care available at the site 24 /7 for their time on location. They did emergent care, daily sick call, drug & alcohol testing ,semi annual physicals ,eye exams and pretty much anything else the company wanted. Anything they were not capable of treating required the flying doctor service to come in & take them out to Darwin or down to Perth. All housing , meals,& transportation were provided by the company contracting the services. At that time 30 something years ago it paid in the neighborhood of 75K plus all benefits & expenses.
