  1. What do you commonly see? people having the worst day of their lives[at least in their mind] How many of the accidents and situations do you think could have been prevented if people just used common sense? common sense in not eating ,drinking , texting, putting on makeup, talking on their phones, reading the newspaper, having carnal relations while trying to drive, or trying to impress upon their peers how stupid they really can be. What do you think are the most vulnerable ages for certain kinds of accidents? children under 18 are more likely to suffer the effects of accidental trauma How would you suggest that parents safeguard their children? lock them up in basements rooms until they reach the age of majority! just kidding, but then maybe thats why I raise Labradors.
  2. But did his wife get the LODD death benefits?
  3. You could hire Steve Berry [i'm not an ambulance driver} to come and give his presentations. He does some excellent motivational and thought provoking educational programs. He covers a wide variety of topics and is a gut busting laugh at times, as well as sure to bring the tears at others.
  4. Remember miscusi is a whacker wannabe who's worried about feeding donuts to FDNY. Wrong place to stick your nose kid! -5 if I could
  5. All I can say to you Mobey,is to take care of your head. Don't let this eat at your psyche.
  6. basically because it is written on a 10th grade comprehension level to even out the playing field.
  7. Your questions seem to make me think you are promoting cookbook medicine. Nowhere did you ask if a treatment plan was based on education or knowledge. You kept going back to " do you use a cookbook to figure out how to diagnose or treat. Believe it or not , a good prehospital practitioner does not need a cookbook to provide quality care in the field. the last time i even cracked open a cookbook was the daylong roll out of the new protocols. If you need to read the book to know what to do next, then maybe you should be in school and not on the street..
  8. When I worked in the big city and we were on the way to a known shooting , stabbing , slashing, serious MVC etc, we would pull a pair of heavy duty playtex kitchen scrubbing gloves with the long cuffs on over the latex gloves. They are much heavier and could be shucked off without exposing your hands. I still keep a couple pairs of them in the jump bag. Of course that was 10 yrs into my practicing , when all of a sudden they decided we need gloves for protection.
  9. The ONLY thing the national registry does is write & administer test so that the various states don't have to spend their own limited funds to do the same. I lied: They also collect lots of money from folks forced to kowtow to their system because it's the only game in town. they are like the utility companies: A monopoly that you can't make a choice of where to take your business. As far as the adaptive CBT , it is supposed to be intelligent and sense where your strong & weak points are, & adapt the questions you see to go after your weak points until it is happy that you either don't have a clue : or really do know the material in their questions. Like anything "done by committee" , it is a compilation of what a large group of folks think you should be tested on.
  10. Boy if that isn't the truth! +1
  11. Putting your gloves on prior to arriving on scene is an added risk in that you might puncture them getting equipment out or if the truck is harboring some hidden nasties, cross contaminating your current pt. there was a study done a few years ago where they swabbed the same twenty places in ambulances from 20 different services. The highest bacteria counts grew out from the steering wheel , the inside door handles of the box and on the microphone for the radios. Why you ask? Because the working area of the pt compartment and the equipment in the back gets lots of attention to cleaning & disinfecting, while the cab get a cursory wipe down. Besides if you put your gloves on prior to arriving you increase the likelihood of sweating and developing contact dermatitis on your hands. edited to add Just so you know, I put my gloves on once I've reached the patient and made my initial EYEBALL assessment.
  12. It's not the price difference. Many insurers of commercial vehicle fleets will NOT insure operators under 21. Risk management data shows a much higher risk with under 21 yo drivers. Guess what? If I can't get insurance to cover you as a driver , then I'm probably not going to offer a position. Just the facts!
  13. One tends to become cynical after a few decades of hearing the same bull dung and stories ! :-] Me : I was born a cynic. something about being a child of the fifties.
  14. I think it was when they were testing the Masimo waveform they found that some blood diseases would alter their results. I remember reading something about it years ago before we bought a RAD -57 monitor.
  15. I'm guessing you want the unvarnished truth : So here goes. Because he was a minor at the time AND it did not include driving he might get lucky. Be sure to report the infraction and license suspension on the application for the class. Many states will screen his license application very carefully prior to issuing an EMT license. Some will not allow him to test for class final if they will even allow him to take the class. Hope it works out for him If his record came across my desk , it would depend on what I saw when I met him in an interview on whether it went in the round file or not.
  16. Just a thought as sickle cell anemia would alter the red blood cells that the masimo rad technology uses to measure CO.
  17. History of Sickle Cell ???
  18. they're just yankin your chain Kid! Bring a box of pastry with you and a round of coffee and you'll be good.
  19. who really gives a rats arse how it's pronounced ??? Well maybe richard as he draws his retirement check from them.
  20. DO NOT ever lie to a pt or sugar coat the issue. What would you do: tell them he's just having a little indigestion and we want him to be seen at the local quack clinic?? If the patient is havinf a heart attack that could be potentially fatal , then he and his family need to be informed of that fact. Yes you explain the how & why you have diagnosed the problem and tell them you are going to a proper medical facility to handle the issue. BUT don't ever blow smoke up a pt's ass and lie to them. PERIOD!
  21. What Mike said! Also remember that a prank gone bad can get you fired or charged with harassment.
  22. My wife & I have been married 37 years and we both are in EMS as well as she is an RN. It can be done if you make the effort to stay as friends first, lovers second and partners third. We met through EMS back when we were kids. Drinking will never solve a problem :::: it can create many though.
  23. HIPAA has nothing to do with your supposed scenario. You are not a covered entity period. End of discussion. http://www.hhs.gov/ocr/privacy/hipaa/understanding/index.html Whether or not your departments privacy/confidentiality rules were violated may be another story. Seeing how you are from small town nude hampster, I'd wager a guess that everyone in town knows that one of your members was arrested for assault within 8 hours. I'm also guessing that the arrested fair haired boy is one of the chiefs" crew". It sounds like you did the correct thing in reporting the incident to your supervisor and now they want to spank you for doing the right thing. Page wolfburg has a lot of info on their website. hopefully the chief has enough smarts to walk away before going down this road. If it does happen go to the state attny generals office and file a complaint. I Know this is all hypothetical!!! PS. I would beg for them to write me up. It would be a great way to pay for a nice vacation.
  24. Love is FOREVER... An elderly lady was invited to an old friends home for dinner one evening. She was impressed by the way her lady friend preceded every request to her husband with endearing terms such as: Honey, My Love, Darling, Sweetheart, etc. The couple had been married almost 70 years and, clearly, they were still very much in love. While the husband was in the living room, her lady friend leaned over to her hostess to say, 'I think it's wonderful that, after all these years, you still call your husband all those loving names'. The elderly lady hung her head. 'I have to tell you the truth,' she said, 'his name slipped my mind about 10 years ago, and I'm scared to death to ask the cranky old asshole what his name is.' and thats how the fight began::::
