  1. Tyler : those are the joys of small town EMS. When you personally know a large percentage of the population and they know you, it will happen. We often get calls at home or have people show up on the doorstep looking for assistance. Many are concerned about the well being of an elderly neighbor , they haven't seen today, or" grandma 's just not right today" kind of worries. other times the knock on the door will be to see if I'll come and pronounce grandpa , cause he's not with us anymore.which turned out to be 92 yo severely dehydrated unconscious unresponsive and resp rate of 6 and full DNR. Called for the truck and ran a couple liters of warm saline in after talking to the Doc at the hospital. Yep thats rural EMS all the way. What I do is call dispatch on the radio and let them know that I am responding to xxxxx @ address and will let them know if further assistance is needed.
  2. When you work in a rural area, it will happen that both pt's will be transported together in the same truck with as much help as you have on scene to assist with bagging and providing care. Both Pt's would be packaged up and loaded for the long trip to the trauma center with both ALS & Bls providers on board. Ever tried to bag for a couple hours while bumping down the road? Your hands and forearms will cramp up something wicked. If one or the other tanks then you still have some crew to deal with the other PT. while your energies are occupied with the pt circling the drain. Rural EMS is WAAAAY different than ten minute transports to your choice of five hospitals. You can spend hours with a critical PT before getting them to a trauma center or even a level 2 hospital.
  3. All you need is to go to Mass and get recerted without ever being there.!!!!
  4. US Navy Seabees. 1972 -1984 Elephant Operator 2nd class when I got out. Spent 2 years at a navcomsta in Western Australia, then got stuck with mobile Battalions. Got tired of visiting some of the bigger shitholes in the world and never being home for more than a few months.
  5. Pro's: A site owner thats not afraid to let the conversations flow A great place to blow off steam, Meet fellow providers from all places of the world Interaction with some really bright minds in the business . Meeting some really smart youngsters , who might be caring for me in my old age { like next year] :=} Cons: Whacker wannnabe's and poser's
  6. After watching all of about ten minutes of the various republican wannabe's screaming at each other in the debate the other night, it would seem they are on the same course as last election. Guaranteeing the democrats a win. It doesn't matter how mad people are at the President, the repubs keep shooting themselves in the foot over and over.
  7. Of course there are times when you end up with more than one pt in the back of the bus if you are in a rural service. City dwellers have zero concept of the fact that NO the rotary wing is not flying today due to weather, and the next nearest bus is also loaded with multiple pt's. We went mutual aid to a crash a few years ago in our neighbors coverage area. Rented Lincoln towncar had not made the turn at Knights corner while doing 65-70 mph. That big old 200 year old maple tree never loses the argument. Problem was there were 9- 20 somethings returning home from a wedding rehearsal dinner in the car. None of them were from the area except the bride in the back seat. We arrived on scene as the second due truck, and walked up on a carnage of twisted metal and bodies in the Lincoln which was twisted halfway around the big ole tree. Several had been thrown clear on impact. Triage had been started and incoming trucks were assigned to transport as soon as the pt's were removed from the wreckage. Of the three thrown clear they had injuries ranging from a broken humerous and lacs, to a near amputation below the knee. We loaded the three of them and headed south for the trauma center. near amputation on the stretcher boarded & collared, humerous FX splinted and strapped in the captains seat. Abdominal injuries boarded and strapped down on the squad bench. All were properly assessed and treated enroute by two of us working in the back. Was it the ideal solution? Probably not, but the remaining Pt's all had serious crush injuries & multi systems trauma, and would need to be transported alone once they were extricated.
  8. Yes there will be lawsuits after any ambulance crash. But when you as a manager are called to the bench to testify why you ordered your crew to toss the obese patient in the back on a mattress instead of having the properly designed equipment to perform the transfer safely, where do you think the judgement is going to fall. /You will be hung out to dry by the company and it's insurer. Try explaining how you can safely transport a obese pt laying down on the floor of an ambulance without causing respiratory distress on an already over whelmed pt. You repeatedly talk about the need to respect the dignity of Obese pt's yet you at the same time recommend hauling them like cargo??????? You pretend to be a manager and promote advocacy for your patients" how about advocating for your employees safety and dignity for a change!
  9. X-ray technologist will have better pay, better hours, better benefits and better working conditions. Don't just limit your horizons there. Look into nuclear medicine as a more needy job tital. Even better pay, benefits, hours, more job openings. Either way get the collage education and expand from there.
  10. Well Your'e certainly off to a ripsnortin start young child. 15 posts and a negative 13 rating Lose the attitude, Lose the scanner Lose the EMS equipment that you shouldn't have! LOSE the avatar, you couldn't even wipe the sweat off dusty's balls. Stop Freelancing! get your punk ass back in school Mc Donalds is hiring, with your attitude you might even make fry manager by the time your 30. If you think this crowd has been tough on you, then maybe you need to be back in kindergarten before you end up killing an innocent victim!
  11. Students today are two separate groups: The middle age folks [30's & 40's ] that have already had a career and have stability, & the punk kids who know everything, have done everything and spend their lives texting . Yes the kids are more tech savvy, but they can't spell , they can't read and they don't know how to study. They want an APP for that. The older group is doing this because they want to expand their knowledge and may be changing professions. The kids are there because mommy said to go do something besides laying on the couch and burning up the gamebox.
  12. Maybe we should all sit around the campfire , hold hands and sing KUMBAYA ! The FNG knew what he did was wrong, came here hoping somebody would blow smoke up his ass and praise him for breaking the law and giving dangerous medical treatment, that he's not trained or licensed to provide. He got the necessary response from licensed professionals. Nothing more and nothing less.!!!
  13. Fair seas and following winds my friend: WOW Mongolia, Talk about going to the far ends of the Earth. You been overseas before, so you shouldn't be too surprised at what you find there. If nothing else , you will have an interesting resume when you return. Ed
  14. Mike: I can understand the frustration with dealing with these type of providers. Some folks can be just punched in on the clock & look that way. I worked with a few pigs over the years and have even turned the garden hose on one that really really needed a bath. BO that brought tears to my eyes. Of course he went whining to the boss! Boss said it was about time somebody cleaned him up. := The fact that a mere PAramedic had the audacity to raise his/her voice and question the attending's in the hospital says a lot about their system and how well they are respected. Our mission is to be a leader in meeting the present and future health care needs of the citizens and visitors in out community through a network of high quality advanced life support services, education and prevention programs which share common goals and values. Service: We are committed to help the sick and injured by providing superior service to our patients and our community with skill, concern and compassion. Quality: Because our patients are our primary concern, we will strive to achieve excellence in everything we do. People: The men and women who are our paramedics, and those associated volunteers, physicians, nurses and students are the source of our strength. They will create our success and determine our reputation. We will treat all of them with respect, dignity and courtesy. We will endeavor to create an environment in which all of us can work and learn together. Stewardship: Fulfilling our mission requires that we use our resources wisely and with accountability to our publics. Integrity: We will be honest and fair in our relationships with those who are associated with us, and other health care workers as well.
  15. You could report them" But while you're on the phone , don't forget to drop a dime on yourself for providing unlicensed care to a trauma pt you self dispatched for! In over 40 years in the business, I have never re-used the linen on the stretcher. We swap out at the hospitals on an as needed basis. All the hospitals in the state have no problem with this practice. Even the privates do this. Well maybe not the evil empire! :-] I do know of for profit services that use the paper on a roll type covering like they use at the Dr's office exam table to save costs. But thats what you get when you work for them.
  16. In reading your original post you might understand why we ALL responded the way we did. You state" you gave him two of the nitro pills that was in his pocket". You""snuck away" when someone in authority wanted to speak with you. Do not be surprised to find a knock on your door with a man offering you jewelry for your wrists. ` Coming back after the fact and changing what you wrote does not excuse your actions. Good samaritan laws will not cover your ass when you do stupid actions that are detrimental to the PT.
  17. Where to start: Your sign in name tells an awful lot about you! Are you a licensed first responder? What agency do you work for? What level of training do you have? Do you have a medical director or protocols that you operate under? First off depending on what state you reside in , you could be charged with impersonating an emergency provider which is a class C crime. Second: you self dispatched yourself to an emergency scene" FREELANCING is not acceptable behavior! Third you placed a cervical immobilization device on the pt. Did you do a proper spinal assessment before & after doing so? Do you even know how to do a proper spinal assessment? It involves a lot more than just wrapping a device around the pt's neck. fourth: You mention the pt bent the steering wheel and is suffering from chest trauma , Yet you administered a prescription medication that was probably the worst thing you could do for this pt. Do you even have a clue what the pharmacological properties of the drug are? Giving a prescription med without a license is not a good way to stay out of trouble. This is most likely the reason the assigned EMS crew asked what the hell you were doing. What if your mistaken need for an adrenaline rush caused the death of the Patient? Do you think you can afford the civil and criminal charges and lawsuits to be filed against your unwarranted actions..??? Hopefully you will take time to think very carefully and read what the folks here are telling you. There are laws and regulations to be followed in EMS. to do otherwise will only get your ass in a sling, or buy you time in jail. If you did this in my area ,you would have been placed in handcuffs and taken to jail to explain your actions to the judge . Don't assume that because" you snuck away from the scene" you will not hear further about this from someone with a badge. The possibility of a formal complaint being filed by the Licensed providers on scene is high. The state will investigate and track you down.
  18. Rest in peace Rob: You suffered long enough through a horrible disease!
  19. You're assuming that anyone really cares that a rich drug addict managed to pay people to give him a fatal overdose. The Paramedics that responded acted appropriately. They found a drug addict in cardiac arrest and worked him.
  20. Drinking Beet juice is something that left coasters do along with their granola & crunchberries. Kinda like folks down south eating fried pigs asshole and calling it chitterlins.
  21. While the sex may make for a fun relationship: and provides short term satisfaction, It takes a lot more to make a strong long lasting relationship. As seen in the OP you can get sex anywhere. We'll have been married for 37 years as of November and communication and caring are the most important things that keep us going year after year. An occasional rock the world round of gratuitous sex never hurts, but it's not the most important thing in our marriage.
  22. If you would like to advertise here : BUY AN AD !!!!
  23. I always tell new folks to try it out for 6 months to a year depending on call volume to find out if this is REALLY what they desire to spend an immense amount of energy and time attending a 2 year Paramedicine program. to say nothing about the cost. Some can go right on and start the program , and others come to realize that having a drunk driver puking all over you and the truck is not all that appealing a career.
  24. You folks need to get rid of the antique stair chairs and buy something more modern made for ergonomic lifting & carrying of patients
  25. Depends on whether you drive a silly little smart car or like me a 1 ton 15 passenger Ford van. If it's the smart car stay home, in my van row 2 center sear with both belts used, in a normal passenger car , the back seat to stay away from the airbags.
