  1. This episode will pass , as many others in your life have before. Stay strong and don't let the Basturds get to you girl! :-} we old folks need to stick together.
  2. It's not a coincidence it's a plan by some little crap weasel you work with to get rid of you. Someone who thinks you are a threat to their job security. It's called backstabbing. In a big outfit like the empire , it's easier to just can and ask questions later, whether theres any truth to the accusations or not. Theres a reason someone invented molotov cocktails.
  3. Years ago in the mid 80's I was working in a lovely inner city hood. The inhabitants developed a new years celebration habit of firing their new UZI's and other heavy handguns up in the air. Needless to say when lead goes up , it must come down. We had all our crews park under the highway overpasses until 0015 and then we ventured out to respond to all the "Gunshot" calls" One year we brought in 26 victims of falling lead before 1 AM. Oh how I don't miss working there!
  4. It can definately happen IF you let it. Many places use system status, which places you in the truck all shift long often staged at convenience stores and fast food parking lots for the next call. I've had partners that do nothing but eat all shift long with a diet of primarily junk food. Instead of falling into that trap, bring a lunch cooler with you and fill it with fruit, veges, yogurt and other healthy snacks. When you do get a chance to sit down out of the truck for a meal make it something other than high fat & grease fast food. People get fat by not burning off more calories than they consume. Tied in with a job that can have periods of boredom it can help pack on the pounds
  5. Here , when an EMS calls comes in , the fire station door opens and we respond with an ALS transport ambulance. For MVC's and water rescue calls , we also have a heavy rescue truck which has all the same equipment as the ambulance except the stretcher. it also carries all the cribbing & extrication gear.
  6. The scary part is thats she's been allowed to reproduce more than once. The only thing missing from this story is the 1960's trailer with tires on the roof!
  7. Can't be sure , But it looks like fake blood to me from a moulage kit.
  8. it would probably be easier to go to electronic PCR reporting
  9. Everyone in our area used the hotsack warmers to keep two bags of fluids warmed at all times Makes a big difference even in warmer seasons. They are 12 volt and are plugged into an outlet in one of the cabinets. We get comments from the ER nurses all the time about how nice it is to see warmed fluids running when we deliver pt's to the hospital.
  10. No foul dwayne: I should have clarified a little better. In a facial trauma or bloody airway I take a quick look see to make the determination of type of classification with the malapatti scale When I say quick It means in & out in ten seconds or less. Do I need to go with suction at the same time as the tube to clear the airway from secretions? or are there anatomical issues that will make it a harder tube or need an alternative method of securing the airway. You ever had a pt that outwardly looked to be a 7.5 and when you got in the guy has a trachea the size of the holland tunnel ?
  11. 3 for 3 attempts at ETI this year. All first attempt. I was taught many years ago by a top shelf gas passer to take a quick look with the scope and decide how your going to proceed with the type of airway needed. There were several others that we managed with aggressive oral /nasal airways and BVM's also CPAP is a tube saver for many respiratory distress patients. We don't get many opportunities ,but we do spend time every month with the head and twice a year with stan the sim man.
  12. Don't know what it's for, but I've got the same thing Steve. Came up with the latest update.
  13. As you're sitting in the drivers seat above your left shin is the parking brake pedal. The chassis fuse block is mounted on the firewall right behind the brake mounting. There will be another fuse block in the Horton electrical system compartment, this is usually behind the drivers seat at the front of the box.
  14. But of course I voted: What do you think I am , An airheaded canuckistanian???? [just kidding]
  15. Got the word today that H1N1 vaccines are finally arriving in sufficient volume so that starting next week we will start holding clinics at local elementary schools for the kids. No mention of when we[the EMS providers] will get the vaccines for us. So you see it's not any different here south of the border.
  16. Don't know about your area but we have had several cases of EEE [eastern equine encephalitis] This year. It is a mosquito borne virus. Some of these cases are mild & some have resulted in death. There are many different viral causes such as mumps, measles, Herpes zoster, chicken pox. IT is thought that with some areas having lower immunization rates in younger children that this will cause localized outbreaks that are completely avoidable by proper immunizations. Here are a few S&S. Signs and Symptoms Symptoms in milder cases of encephalitis usually include: fever headache poor appetite loss of energy a general sick feeling In more severe cases of encephalitis, a person is more likely to experience high fever and any of a number of symptoms that relate to the central nervous system, including: severe headache nausea and vomiting stiff neck confusion disorientation personality changes convulsions (seizures) problems with speech or hearing hallucinations memory loss drowsiness coma
  17. Here in Maine, USA we have a governors proclamation that essentially makes all EMT-I's & EMTP's govt employees in regards to giving inoculations to the public. The state EMS office developed a specialized 4 hour training course to deal with influenza/h1n1 vaccines. We are able to go to clinics set up by public health agencies and local hospitals and to go to the schools and assist getting the masses vaccinated if needed. The H1N1 vaccines are just starting to arrive at this time so we will see what happens and how often we are tasked to staff public clinics.
  18. It's working fine with Safari on my Mac. The problem must be a windose thing
  19. The chevy 4500 cutaway chassis was a little over US $39000.00 with the ambulance prep package Compared to the Ford E-450 chassis we bought this year at US $ 36000.00. The chev has a wee bit more belly room ,but less leg and head room and the footwells are more cramped [narrow] compared to the Ford. The medium duty IH & freightliner chassis are just too big to maneuver down small rural roads and drive ways. Plus as I said before they ride like a dump truck even with the problematic air ride systems.
  20. I'll pass the invite along to him. He's a serious looking guy , former 82nd airborne & then state trooper. He should be back there at KAF as we got an e-mail from him today. Initials P.P.
  21. The international chassis is around US$ 63,000 for the 4300 lo-profile chassis, Freightliner is in the same neighborhood. Plus they are not a nice ride even with air ride suspension. Maybe OK in an urban paved street environment, but not on rural roads. Ford 2009 E-450 chassis was US$ 36.000 for the one we bought this year. An additional cost for next year will be new emissions requirements that are expected to add a few thousand $$ to the cost of the chassis.
  22. Keep your heads down and always check you six gang! Sounds like life over there is going to get just a little dangerous in the near future. My brother in law retired in June as a CT state trooper and a week later he E-mailed that he's working for an un-named govt contractor and on his way to the lovely tourist destination spot of Kanduhar. Something to do with teaching the local police force how to do their jobs.
  23. For 2010 the Ford ambulance prep package will be offered with the V-10 Gas motor in the E-350-450 cutaway chassis. In the F-350& 450 type 1 chassis you can get the 6.4 liter diesel. For 2011 model year , [ expected out in the spring] , Ford should have their all new 6.7 diesel, which is a completely new in-house design and manufactured by Ford. No more Navistar produced motors. If your trucks will last another year it will more than likely be worth the wait. If not some ambulance builders stocked up on diesel chassis before they stopped production. Here is a link to a Ford website that gives a lot of info on the new drivetrain package http://www.fordvehicles.com/2011Superduty/
  24. Welcome from the Midcoast ! Maine is not anywhere near as behind the times as you might think when it comes to protocols.
  25. Fat people get FAT by eating way more calories than they burn off. Ever been at a restaurant and watched a FAT person eat. They don't order a small salad and a water. They order a big deluxe triple cheeseburger and a large fry along with a desert , Oh and don't forget the 32 oz sized DIET coke! Like the quart of DIET coke will keep them from putting on weight! [ Hope you note the sarcasm ] To blame a "medical issue " as the reason they are FAT is just a crock. They eat too much, period. Yes once they get fat, they more than likely develop health problems. I treated a 5' tall 10 year old recently that outweighed me by thirty pounds. I'm 6'2" & 205 lbs, same weight as 35 years ago when I got married & 10 lbs more than when i graduated from High school.
