Are you really part of EMS???
AnthonyM83 replied to Just Plain Ruff's topic in General EMS Discussion
No, because it's not your primary purposes that your company is setup for. You're not part of the county's EMS system. You're prepared for the possibility that your next transfer is an emergency since you come across them semi-often, like a police officer learns CPR & first aid, in case his next call involves an injury or critical medical problem. I really like Dust's analogy of the security guard completing a police academy....or one of my coworkers completing his FF-1 academy...they're not cops or firefighters. My college used people who had completed the full police academy as our private security service...they wanted knowledgeable people instead of whacker guards off the street so they could deal with the few emergencies that arose. Likewise your transfer service wants drivers with cross-training in emergency medicine and familiar with medical conditions. Another way of looking at is: what does a the public expect when they call 911. Someone whose main profession is emergency response and they've been educated and on-the-job trained and equipped to handle their medical emergency. Not just someone who has completed the EMT course. Not knocking transfer companies, though. I just see it as a different track than EMS. It's a fine job just like many other jobs people do. It helps pay the bills and you hopefully get something out of it. Patient contacts. Much less stressful than EMS. Probably a good place to practice assessments for the pre-EMS candidates if you really really need to, but it's a different field. -

Sings: One of these things doesn't belong here...one of these things is a lie...can you guess which one...? Hint: It's not the Afro-American one.... -
Uhh, that's a little too gay for me. I'm bailing.

Dust man (wonder how many posts have started that way), Yar missing something. Even if we get rid of all cars and all factories on Earth, we won't reverse the effect. We're not advocating reducing ozone levels to those lower of what we had before the Industrial Revolution or advent of cars, trains, and airplanes. We're never going to undo it to the point that we into an early ice age. We don't know if man will always survive...we're the only example we have and we haven't been around long enough to see how we fare.

Scandal- Does this make the organization look bad?
AnthonyM83 replied to emt12resq's topic in General EMS Discussion
I tried finding full episodes on youtube, but all I found were intros and little clips! But hey, who needs the show when you run with the real thing 8) 8) 8)  -
Dust, you brought the issue up yourself....honestly I only spent 4-6 seconds skimming that article, but I'm assuming it's about them not saving their kid in time because s/he's black. But you said it earlier concerning the avatar icon...not you, but is a FF in general, more likely to risk his life for a cute innocent helpless little girl or some ratty bratty looking kid of the same age? The former...I've seen it. So, is a white FF more likely to risk his life (even risking disciplinary action) for a white kid who reminds him of his daughter or niece or a girl of a different race who he's not that connected to....(and further away from genetically, probably, thus less of a desire to protect, if we're talking evolutionary biology here)

How do we inspire others Re: Book learnin
AnthonyM83 replied to mobey's topic in General EMS Discussion
I can relate a bit Edogs. While no one has given me grief for it (they probably assume I'm reading for school like everyone else), it does often make me feel disconnected from others when they're spending the little time we have when all the crews are in quarters at the same time socializing, while I'm just using the downtime to get through a paramedic book. I know in the end the knowledge will help, but at the same time I feel like the businessman who works for 20 years so he can relax and go have fun, but when he finally gets there, it's retirement time and his friends feel like relaxing b/c they've gotten all their partying out...know what I mean...anyone relate? -

Ah, yes, the city of Carson. Really nice medics there. They'll still send ALS patients by BLS, but good guys. They don't treat EMTs like retards. -
Anyone Willing to Answer Questions on Phone?
AnthonyM83 replied to AnthonyM83's topic in General EMS Discussion
I do ask doctors and nurses when there's time. Often there's only one doctor for an entire ER with 25 beds, plus those waiting on the gurnies for a bed, so there's not much time, if you can even find him. But usually, our questions pop up after we've cleared the hospital as we're discussing the call or while posting on a street corner discussing some topic. I do ask on EMTCity, but often I don't get home until 72 hours later, then sleep for a day, and usually forget by the next time I log on...and the discussion is long over. And really if I have the internet, I usually just end up googling it. Also, sometimes it's nice to get a pre-hospital care perspective. -

I was gonna say...that station seems a bit familiar...as if I had passed by it once or twice Never got to see the show, though...I've heard it mentioned a million times... -
I think I have some of cytokine pathways...

Sounds like a joke of a system.

The other thread where someone said the poster with grammatical errors had no hope made me think of this. Have you guys ever been in a situation where your patient was going to die, no doubt about it, and they asked you if they were going to die or how they were doing? How did you reply to that? I know for a lot of critical patients, you say stuff like "You're badly injured, but we're going to do everything we can for you and you're going to be okay"....but I'm talking imminent death. I had a friend who was once asked as a police officer by a shooting victim if he was going to die. He just said, "Yeah, man you are". His reply was "I can't di----" never finished the sentence. EMS was not on-scene yet. CONSIDERABLE blood loss.

I don't even know what those are.

I don't really know that many practicing paramedics, since my company is 99.9% EMTs and some some newly certed medics still working as EMTs. A lot of times after a call, we have questions. We try to look it up in the books we carry with us, but it's not always there or not always clear. I know it's a stretch, but wondering if anyone would be willing to be available to have me text or heck even call, but preferably text message questions here and there for educational purposes. It'd just be nice to have some professional contacts for that. If so, send me a PM. I tried getting onto here from my phone, but it doesn't really work for me...my phone's not high tech enough. Thanks.

A serious tip for this website: Use proper spelling, grammar, and punctuation. When you post one big red paragraph with misspelling and punctuation, it's hard to read, and people just skip over it, instead of sitting there trying to make sense of it. To get a better reply, I'd edit your post and retype it all nice It gives us a better impression of you, too.

Speaking of drunk.... That's a very long sentence, by the way.

Since never, but when comparable countries think something is a worthy enough cause it deems consideration. It also shows that the efforts of the other governments are doable. It's not by itself justification, though.

ballistics vests for EMS providers?
AnthonyM83 replied to courageheartx's topic in Tactical & Military Medicine
You don't necessarily need to go get yourself one. At least MY main point, is that those who claim there's a need for them shouldn't be criticized. -
What more are they asking on the personal level? The government level is different...other countries agreed to the Kyoto Treaty...they seem to think it's worth it.

I was about to say, I don't think HIV is that easy to get, even if you have micro-cuts on your skin and have them covered in blood. Yet, it'd be stupid to take the chance, huh. It'd be different if it were a deep needle stick, but in that case your gloves don't do you much good, anyway. -
No way to be sure either way!

Global Warming and Big Ambulances. An Inconvenient Truth?
AnthonyM83 replied to Scaramedic's topic in General EMS Discussion
All that room and it only has 3 gurneys? I can hold 2 supine patients, belted in, in a van ambulance. -
Ah, no more! It could be fact or fiction, but consequences if it's fact are too great to dismiss. If it ends up being fiction, then we've still done nothing but good for the earth and our progeny. Win-win!
