  2. Well, that's what one gets when they shoot so many pictures of Chuck Norris. No one shoots at Chuck Norris and gets away with it.
  3. Where exactly in the back was it? Midline? Both sides? Close to flanks? OPQRST? SAMPLE??
  4. Perforation of some kind....aortic? kidneys? reproductive system somewhere?
  5. Well, I think the cot is what #6 is referring to.... And 7 is true, but the fastest undressers I've ever seen are ER nurses, even in noncritical situations.
  6. After spending my day in Malibu getting my ass kicked by waves trying to body surf, I have decided I would NOT make a good lifeguard. Too bad.
  7. Uh...most doctors and nurses don't walk around with barrier devices. I've seen some who carry mini ones on their keychains, but vast majority don't. It's a very valid thing to include in the article and I didn't take it negatively. The point is that it's currently a reason even health care professionals might not want to do CPR and the new method overcomes it.
  8. Good point in that all this hero/Ricky Rescue stuff isn't filtered out during EMT school, so I wouldn't always blame EMTs who act that way, because they don't know better. They're simply acting how they see everyone else act. No good role models. I worked in public safety before, so got my whackerish tendencies mostly out back then, but otherwise I'd be running around like everyone.
  9. Does anyone have access this journal and article?
  10. Same here Brent. None of the pictures, even those posted previously, are loading.
  11. I guess is an image mismatch, between the public perception of a public safety hero and a medical professional. It of course looks bad when our defense is scene-safety and protocols, when FD arrives and goes right in. I can see how witnessing that incident would be appalling to someone from the public, though....but if we start the pattern of not waiting for PD, then we're going to end up losing our jobs/lives and not be around to respond to the next call...but in a way, I think the public sometimes expects us to take that risk, thus the appalled letter the writer sent in.
  12. While I don't think your post in anyway makes you less qualified to be in EMS, since compassion can be given out discriminately based on situation, I do think it's a good enough reason to get together just to mourn/feel emotions/bond. The physical acts are just physical acts, the date is just a date, even exact number dead is just a number, and doesn't mean much without the effects of the them, which in our case was mainly emotional (with good reason). THOUGH, I still understand what you're saying...I personally don't get into the whole "We Will Never Forget" thing, b/c everyone started clinging way too soon after the attack to that semi-vindictive slogan, instead of concentrating on grief and political meaning of events, almost a defensive mechanism. BUT it's not fair to judge people based on whether they remember dates if that's not what they value...they probably couldn't remember the date Britney married that guy, either. As military/public service/medical personnel, we place more value on facts/dates, etc.
  13. I think it gives you about the same knowledge to "go out and save lives" as a 6 month course. EMT-Basic level doesn't do that much.... The original poster will hear it again and again on this site. EMT is basically an advanced first aid course and surface introduction to some diseases/disorders you'll encounter in the field.
  14. I'd say it depends on the school. Comparing my two quarter community college EMT course versus the 3 week (full-time) UCLA course, I'd prefer the 3 week course (judging from the ride-alongs we have from there). Really depends on the schools you're comparing, though.
  15. No, but I own a pair of those.... (It was for a dress up Valentine's Day party!)
  16. See, the thing is, that guy's right. He CAN go to work, spray morphine, and not really know much about it or why he's really doing it. The certification levels and EMS systems have are setup so that it's possible for people like him to be treating the public. :-/
  17. WTH is THAT all about!? Fine, I'll have to carry on the tradition for you...sigh
  18. When I rode with them a couple times last year, they had 1-Medic/FF and 1-EMT/FF in the SFFD ambulance...(BTW, one of those medics was the worst ride-along I've had...he was great to me, but verbally abused patients and slammed a homeless post-ictal guy against the ambulance b/c he couldn't answer the A/O3 questions right....among other things). PS Gas is expensive here, too...
  19. That was the reason I posted my reply. I comprehended that you didn't care much for the job...but the reputation you leave at a company can follow you for awhile, not through references necessarily, but through word of mouth. Even if the "stick it" is a generalization, the advice given is the same...I wager the posters DID understand you didn't say that specific phrase, but felt the advice was equally as valid.
