Legal, Medical, Ethical Question - Emancipation
AnatomyChick replied to AnatomyChick's topic in General EMS Discussion
I agree..the comment that she was engaged plays no role in this.. it was just a point that one of my students wanted to clarify..and to give the full picture I added. Yes, I agree, that she is Emancipated.... Statuatory Rape has no basis on this question as it was about consent, and the "baby daddy's" age was not given..however, interesting discussion. My goal is to see what my "peers" decided....seems like the majority of us agree that if she is "with child", she is a "parent" for now anyway, and thus would be considered an Emancipated Person and able to make her own medical decisions. Thanks so much for all of the input. -
Not sure what to do....What Would You Do?
AnatomyChick replied to jnjplus6's topic in Education and Training
As an Instructor, I want people to come to me with problems, solutions or ways to make the program better. I want to know what is being done when I am not around.... I think it shows true character. With that said, I agree, that if the quiz was that important, the Instructor should not have left the room, but I can also play Devil's advocate and make a point that when you are the only instructor in the "house" that night, there are often a lot of things to get done or set up in a relatively short period of time. I think you did the right thing, and I commend your Instructor for looking into the situation. What a good discussion! -
Was your DUI a felony? If not insurance through hpso.com should not be an issue.

OK..so I posed a question to my EMT students..and WOW did it ever start a discussion. Here's the question: You are providing care for a 15 year old female who is pregnant. What type of consent would you be seeking from her? Here are some clarifying points that my students wanted to know. She is Engaged to the "Baby Daddy", She is conscious and complaining of Abdominal Pain. What say ye?

I have done temp cards in the past.... they were from the entity that I worked for...and a place holder until the "AHA/ARC" card came in. I am unable to keep stock cards in my business with the Training Satellite that I work with, so I never have the cards the "day of". Most people are ok with the wait, some aren't. I have also sent copies of the roster back with them. And because the Family & Friends course doesn't have an official card with an "expiration or recommended" renewal date on it, I used to do in house cards that were good only for our institution. It's been done...nothing wrong with it as long as it stays "in house" or the "employer" knows that it's a placeholder. AC Oh, and before the AHA folks attack that comment in droves...I was an Regional Faculty Member for years..it's legit.... just can't have the logo on it, and can't say AHA on it. As I said, it was an in house card.

I amost hesitate jumping into this discussion, however, this is what I tell my students: Read the question, and then close your eyes and answer the question in your head. Look for the correct answer in those that are listed for you There are cases in which two of the answers may seem right, but there is ALWAYS one answer that is better than all of the others presented. Remember this. YOUR SAFETY, the ABC's, and Life threats... answer in that order...if airway is a possibility in the answer, then re-read the question to see if that answer fits. Good Luck! AC

It's nice to have the bigger part of the troops out of there, but as has been said we are a LONG ways from truly "out of Iraq".

Fairly certain that this is NOT a 2011 "saying" but I'm STILL hearing it more than I'd like. "That's what she said".

Cameras are prohibited and pictures will get you fired
AnatomyChick replied to DFIB's topic in General EMS Discussion
Within the scope of my Class, I DO NOT let students take photo's of MVA's, MCI's, Patient Wounds etc. It's based solely on them being in my class though. We DO discuss that in some areas physicians might need a "look" at what kind of incident/accident/illness you found on the scene. Of course with all rules, there is a reason that I don't allow my students to take photo's. I had a student once..great kid, but didn't think about what he was doing..was showing univolved classmates, friends, family, etc pictures of the cool stuff that he got to see in the ER. How did I find out? The Director of ER called me after she found him taking a photo. Pictures have their place, and they are helpful...but not within the scope of an EMT program. Just my .02 AC -
Masticate = To Chew I hate it when people say "mute" and mean "moot"...and then use it incorrectly. Olecranon Process = process of the ulna that forms the outer bump of the elbow and fits into the fossa of the humerus when the arm is extended.

Question on NR scoring system.
AnatomyChick replied to eCamp91's topic in NREMT - National Registry of EMT's
Also, they do pass certain areas...OB, Airway, Ops, etc.... but then it is taken as a whole and averaged out as Passing, Nearly Passing or Below Passing... I miss the OLD days when we actually got scores..and a print out of exactly how we scored on each section. Ah well. Memories..... -
Oh Captain, my Captain.... I am currently in the middle of Lies My Teacher Told Me...what did you think?

How about Cap'n or Cappy?

I started on EMT City as joemt496. Jo being my name (sorta), EMT level of Licensure and 496 was my radio number. I still use that sign on in a few places. But one year, my students were really busting my chops about how in depth I was going into the Human Body Lecture..One of my students called me Anatomy Chick on break..and well..yeah. The avatar is just one that I have from eons ago (found on the web I'm sure) and thought fight my screen name.

I am finding it difficult to believe that you are a Manager of anything except maybe a topless bar. I am hopeful that the company that you "manage" for does not have the ability to view your posts here, or your "name"..or your cleavaged picture. Not much of a picture of professionalism IMHO. And what kind of manager doesn't give positive feedback when it IS possible to make substantial changes if the proper muscles are worked? WOW... To the OP, don't give up based on the advice or comments of Miss Pee Pee....If this is a job you really want, work towards it. Best of Luck! AC

tcripp..good point..and well taken...we'll be practicing that tomorrow..as I am currently teaching in a Firehouse

ERDoc..I meant to answer. I cannot say for sure if it is an issue or not. My gut reaction based on what I have read or know about AED's is that it would NOT be a problem, however, it is better to be safe than sorry, and would be good to just get it off the patient and stored safely.
-
I would remove it in the holster, transport the patient and turn it over to Security once at the Hospital. In regards to what Miss Pee Pee has said first of all, are you saying that you would delay transport of the patient to wait 15 minutes for the LEO to get there? If not what are your plans for the gun? I would agree that if you are unfamiliar with the gun or "scared of it", that you are the last person who should be handling it..maybe your partner is more confident? The OP's question was not about illicit or illegal goods being transported in your Ambulance. I'm not saying that anyone's opinion here is wrong, I'm saying that if you are going to make absolute remarks like "Never, and Period" you might want to justify your response more effectively than throwing up Cocaine or Porn. Just my .02 AC

We talk a LOT about this in the EMT class that I teach...mainly because it happened to us about 7 years ago. It is important to be able to focus on the job at hand, and provide every bit of assistance you can..but it is also IMPERATIVE to debrief afterwards...even the hard core naysayers of CISD's were appreciative that one was held when it happened to us.

My personal fave to build up the leg muscles is the Leg Press that nearly every gym has (my gym is small but we have one).... As I was told by my Personal Trainer, that machine works every muscle of the leg (Especially the Quads), so if you do only one machine, make it that one. Just my advice...I saw a DRAMATIC difference in what I could press within 2 to 3 weeks. AC

Helping a new paramedic get his foot in the door.
AnatomyChick replied to Walter Perrell's topic in General EMS Discussion
You may have to relocate...in my area of Missouri we can't get enough Paramedics to fill shifts at our local Hospital based unit. -
Welcome to the City.... this is the place to decide if EMS is for you, well here and the streets..but at least here, you have the ability to read all of our war stories and decide if it's something you'd like to be a part of.
