Hey Dust... loved that link.. it should be required viewing for all of the newbies!

My preference is the same now as it has been always... AAOS all the way. the Brady books are full of contradictions from chapter to chapter.... I'm currently teaching with another text (Not Mosby, not AAOS) that is MUCH, MUCH worse... After this class, if I ever have the opportunity to teach an EMT-B course again, I'll be going back to AAOS.

Awesome! Good for you.. I'm glad that you're having a good experience... get all of the ride time you can... it'll pay off in the end.

Embarrasing calls that you were the patient.

I'm not going to go into details, but Tequila + steps = Landing on the ground and being picked back up by those you've trained.... -
Was I wrong to open my mouth in this case??

Connie, I have a sneaky suspicion that there may be more of us on this forum who think that you're trying too hard to share the blame than those who think you're right. In the end all that matters is that you are the one being disciplined (fair or not) and that the other crew members aren't admitting to anything. This is beginning to sound like whining. You've already admitted that you were in the wrong. You can ony control what you did or did not do, it is not your responsibility to try to control the actions of others. If the previous crews didn't report the problem, then tough on them, they have to sleep with the fact that they let you "hang" for the infraction.... I'm a firm believer in what goes around comes around. Don't be upset when your attempts to bolster support here fail. We've all been through similiar situations and have pushed on and moved forward. I'm really not a fan of the term "buck up".. but, I'm thinking that it's time that you move past this issue. We're a supportive bunch here, but enough is enough.. Buck Up! -

Connie, if they've been around much, they won't think you're neurotic... just doing a little "CYA"... -

Dustdevil "It sounds to me like you actually disagree with James' post. What he said is that it is completely about the blame game. It's about management finding somebody to blame, and somebody accepting that blame. " Touche.... I guess I agree about 60% with James.... what I was trying to say is that Connie shouldn't be blaming or "trying to share" the blame with other staff... Buck up and take responsibility (which I realize that she says she has, but in actuality.. she's still blaming the "other" crew(s) )..... Proving anyone noticed those wires showing prior to her is going to be difficult, a more appropriate route (in my eyes) is just to "bite the bullet" and go on. As James said.. "Lesson Learned". I would lay odds that she will NEVER make that mistake again. -
Have you utilized Emergency Medical Services Magazine CME's, or JEMS? Do an online search. Visit www.fieldmedics.com (there's some free CE stuff there).... look around, the hours are there, you just have to find them.

Man... I hate it when I have to agree with James.... However, it's happening again. I agree 100% with this post. This shouldn't be about the blame game... it's time to realize that you are responsible for your actions and that is that. Do I think you should be suspended.. probably not.. do I think that there should be some remediation effort and a letter put in your file, absolutely! -
Yeah, yeah.. more like ANY girl Jake!

We have them go ahead of us as well, and ask them to use the same routes that we're using... for the same reasons as those listed above... to expedite check in (which I realize is basically automatic in some areas if you arive via ambulance... to arrive at nearly the same time... and so that we don't have to worry about watching them in the rear view mirror.. also if we "light it up".. we don't necessarily want the family getting panicked...

Learning Styles and Questions from a Newbie...

Well said Dwayne! If you really want to be a part of a study group, form one... don't wait around for one to form around you, because it will likely never happen. As an instructor, let me give you a couple of other tips.... 1. Let your instructor know your Study Group schedule. If they're like me, they'll want to try to be available by phone for any "clarification" questions that you might have. Consider this availability as a courtesy, and don't deluge them with questions that you can research and find an answer for. 2. If your Instructor doesn't care about your study group times, etc... make sure that you make a list of those questions that you're still not 100% sure of. Thinking that you'll remember when you get to class NEVER works. 3. Invite the entire class to your study groups... not just those that are in your "click"... you never know who may show up and actually need the assistance. I agree with Dwayne though.. set a standard of studying vs. Goofing off early into the groups meetings. If you have access to the internet at your study site, that could be good too, as you can always jump online to do a quick search / research .. or even log into the chat here, and pose the question.... Take assistance wherever you can find it! (When you get answers from outside sources, always clarify their validity with your instructor... it makes me CRAZY when my students come in and tell me something that they learned from an outside source that isn't test / DOT / NHTSA standards).... -
Yep... Rid beat me to it, but you can only count each class as "one"... that goes for CPR, BTLS, PHTLS, etc.....
-
I was up in Polk County... still haven't heard from some of my friends that were hit in that area.

I "think" we've discussed this on the board before..... someone had a Great idea, though I can't remember the specifics... maybe they'll post it again.

Whew... glad I wasn't the only one who noticed. Especially for an Educator.. and the spelling... well, don't get me started! -
Nuke, in my experience I have found that fire based courses typically will NOT work. The NREMT Recommended topics isn't really that difficult to understand.... For example, when you take a CE class on Childbirth Emergencies, all you really need to do is find where that was covered in your original textbook, and voila, you can count it for "Medical".... You "might" get lucky and get Confined Space Rescue to count under Special Ops... or the "Elective" section. By the way, if you are taking College level classes, if they correlate to anything EMS (ex. Anatomy & Physiology, Abnormal Psychology, etc) you can get hour for hour credit.... in fact one of my former students was told that they could take hours for every hour that they sat in the classroom..... I'd double check that information, but I do know that you can get credit for College courses. Also as a reminder.. if you add a lot of questionable "fluff" it flags you for an audit... I've had a couple of friends get audited, due to questionable hours.. so, they don't just get the forms and never look at them, they are all reviewed...

There is a GREAT Case Study based workbook out there... however, why aren't you doing more scenarios in class...?? Ah well, none of my business. I believe that the Case Study book is published by Mosby, but I don't have it in my office here, it's at home... send me an offline and I'll get the publisher for you. -
And obviously very near my neck of the woods.... We had them in Hermitage, Nixa, Pittsburg, and Flemington (I know I'm forgetting a couple).... In fact there was one gentleman just SE of me who lost a home in 2003 to a tornado, and lost another one in this storm...

I ask the following question in all of the Adult CPR classes that I teach: True or False: All Heart Attack victims have (or should) receive CPR. Of course the answer is False, and believe it or not... most of us Missouri Rednecks get it right.... but it does lead into a very interesting discussion about the difference... it's worked well for me. As has been said time and time again in this forum... education is the key!

We use the old adage here that a "Happy Trauma Patient is a Naked Trauma Patient"... I tell my students, if something happens to me, and I wake up and you're smiling at me, and I realize I'm naked... I can guarantee that I WILL NOT be happy! One of my students made me a shirt one time that said "in case of emergency, please remove all of my clothing".... yeah.... and I even passed her!
-
Hmmmm the concept of sick people looking ... ummmm... sick... go figure! I subscribe wholeheartedly to the "Don't even think about cutting my clothes off!" idea (I know all of the EMT's & Paramedics in a 4 County area..someday I'll have to tell you my fall down and go BOOM story)...
