Guns on Campus Your Opinion Would students be Safer
DwayneEMTP replied to spenac's topic in Archives
Mike, it's not my intention to call you out as I believe your post was perfectly clear that you're not taking a stand against guns...but it reveals a common thought of the anti gun crowd. So let me ask anyone opposed to guns this, in all earnestness. How do we remove guns from our society? If you can answer this convincingly, I give you my word that tomorrow I will pound my gun into a paper weight. I hate guns, but own one. Why? Because evil people own them as well...But I would truly celebrate the day that U.S. society became unarmed if only I knew that ALL of use were unarmed. How do we make that happen? Dwayne -
You know Dust, this begs the question; Have you ever read the B. F. Skinner book, "Walden Two"? Dwayne
-
Agreed. You have to read the text Dust, and perhaps spend more time with Vivi in Cali...your usual reading material has got you only looking at the pictures! It seems like they're on the right track...I'm actually for anyone that is interested in taking a new, intelligent look at the back of the ambulance. There are plenty of improvements that could be made. And this one seems to place medic safety equal to, or above patient safety during a crash. I'm thinking perhaps, (Though I haven't really looked around the corners of this idea) this is a good thing as the risk certainly lie with the medics percentage wise, and not the patient? Dwayne

Unless I'm mistaken, at the bottom of this post you've put a link to your satisfied customers, so what is your point? Below was my concession to fairness. I'm willing to bet those not irritated with me understood the "something like that" to be my failure and not yours...though it speaks volumes about you that you chose to use it as you did. Fair enough. Could you please send me a list of files that were downloaded with my "program" because after several hours of sorting through stuff I have never found a file that didn't need to be downloaded before I could use it. I will be happy to post that list here for fairness. As well, I will be happy to do a screen capture of the screens used to access the information along with the links that they activate. I attempted to be fair with my review, but if you want to make this personal and call me a liar, then you'd better be ready to play ball as I take my honesty very seriously and am willing to get very ugly to show you as untruthful where my honesty is concerned. Could you explain how this is to my benefit? That might be where our misunderstanding lies, as I've found no benefit to having to download each item and open it before I can tell if it even interests me or not. (Surly you're not referencing the 'free' material!?!) Again, please send me a list of a 'significant' number of the parts that are not online and I will be happy to explain my misunderstanding here and make it right. I've purchased many, many learning programs for myself and my son, and at no other time have I been forced to download something with nearly every click of the mouse to make it functional. I made my displeasure obvious and purposely didn't ask for a refund. I wanted to see if it would be offered when it became obvious that I wasn't happy. It wasn't, you decided to whine instead. That's too bad. I did in fact ask for the CD version of the program to see if that would resolve the need to enter my reg code each time I opened the program but was told, "That won't help, you'll get the same thing on CD." That's fair, as I felt a little blindsided by your product and your response to my post. I guess that makes us even. I've incredibly easy to please. Sell me what you've promised, make good on the issues that I had. I did in fact offer to give you my opinion on your product before I posted this review. Had I sensed any interest then at least I might have had faith that you were interested in making it a better product. You weren't, so I posted and honest review. I would love to continue this here. If I've been unfair I will, as always, have no problem admitting I've made a mistake and make things right to the best of my ability. Just prove me wrong and I'll back you 100%. Up to the point that you called my honesty into question I've had no issues with you, and have enjoyed and learned from your posts. I've no ax to grind, I posted what I believe honest information in an attempt to help others make an educated, informed buying decision. And I don't believe that it will be missed by the many intelligent people here that when confronted by a complete picture of my impression of your product that you decide to become indignant instead of attempting to "make it right." I look forward to your response and the opportunity to clear up any misconceptions I may have created in your future customers. Dwayne

Great posts...Mateo pretty much summed it up, except for this... Make sure you have a valuable preceptor(s). If you are belittled, insulted, ignored, or in any way disrespected...complain. My first phase was a nightmare. I came out of school knowing some things...yet through 132 hours of brow beatings and insults came to believe I didn't know anything. Then wasted half of my second phase being convinced that in fact I was taught correctly and hearing "Dwayne, please stop second guessing yourself!" I stuck it out because I was told "She's a great medic, but tough!" I wanted tough...what I got was a Bozo and a bully. You've hear the phrase that goes something like, "A coward dies a thousand deaths but a hero dies but once." I'll not soon forgive myself for being a coward and allowing some of the most valuable part of my education to be wasted. I hope you'll choose differently. My Colorado Springs preceptors will always have a place in my heart for their patience and kindness, but the bottom line is I wasted a LOT of their time with the insecurities I allowed to be instilled in me from phase one. I'm hoping you'll be smarter than me...which doesn't really take much...and demand that your field education comes with respect and obvious benchmarks of your progress. If they don't...demand a change. Dwayne

And you might make sure that they knew their duties to begin with... On my first significant MVA as a student I was accused to freezing up. We showed up on scene and there were four cars involved, I climbed out of the back and what was going through my head was, "Man, the traffic is close! Is someone on top of that? The medic is going to speak to the fire captain, the basic is going to car #1, there is fire talking to the other cars..." When I heard, "You gotta move!" To where? And do what? What is more important for me to do at this time than figure out what's going on? I've come to believe that a lot of what many consider freezing is simply those in the back playing catch up with the scene. The crew in front has had information on the scene, through their windows and radios, for sometimes as much as a couple of minutes before I step out of the back and see it all for the first time. Of course this supposes a third rider. If they are up front and freezing up then you have a training problem in the vast majority of cases. When you don't have time to think you fall back on your training. If they are doing neither, then I'm guessing training is the problem. Good luck. Dwayne

I don't...but would be interested to hear your thoughts if you decide to give it a go... Dwayne

I thought you were going to say: [spoil:8e245b60f4] Estrogen...and i'm not afraid to use it! [/spoil:8e245b60f4] I'd rather face a gun... Dwayne -
Hard to say for sure. Would I buy it again...no. There is certainly a lot of information, but it's difficult to make use of in the format provided. And I'm still an NT user. I have a 2 year rule with anything that says Microsoft on it. I'm kind of selfish in that I let others work the bugs out before giving them my money. And then only after a through review of my friends and family to find out how it's working for them. That was my only real intent with the review. I have no wish to burn EMS Solutions down, he seems like a first rate guy...only to express my opinion so that others can make an educated buying decision, as I don't feel I had the information necessary to do the same. Have a great night Ruff...We really need to knock a hole in another bottle of tequila soon! Dwayne

So I ordered Turbo Medic, I don't remember what I paid for it exactly, but it wasn't a fortune. I wanted to love it, as EMS Solutions sometimes has great posts here. But I have really mixed feelings about it. First, I was way disappointed that it was sold as a program, because it's not. It's file after file after file of LINKS to resources. Each new topic you want to explore is in an additional file that must be gotten to by clicking a link, then downloading the file, and then exploring it. When I first installed it, I was shocked to find that it doesn't even create it's own shortcut. I couldn't find it! So I sent off an email, the next day got a nice response saying something to the effect, "It doesn't do that. Just do a search for the .exe file and then right click and choose, create a shortcut." or something like that. So I did so. And it worked. Though now, each time that I open it I must enter my registration code. So with the folder I've created to house my shortcut I must also have a text file with my reg code so I can cut and paste it in each time I use it. I sent an email about this as well (which I hate! I want things to work like they should!) and was told he wasn't sure what that was about, but it looked like I would just need to enter it to use it. (His answer is much more elegant, but as I'm a freak about keeping my email clean I can't quote it here.) The information is pretty eclectic, with some files being in, what seems to me, a logical order, and others having what seem to be huge gaps where obvious, logical parts of the information should have been. There are tests, but some of them are self graded, and some not. And the one test that I found that WAS self graded wouldn't allow me to mark my answers! Grrrrr. It's pretty frustrating to find that as well as not really being a program, it more or less seems to be a bunch of stuff collected and put under headings that 'kind of' make sense. Ask me where to find the path of blood through the heart and I have every faith that I now own it....but I have no faith that I could find it. That's the flip side of this. If you can find the information, and have the patience to download it and sort through it, there is a ton of it there. The author is right, it would take thousands of dollars to collect all of this information if I had to buy the books/DVDs to do so. But at least then I could find it when I wanted it and expect that it would be presented in a professional manner. So, there you have it. Would I buy it again? No. Not so much because it is very amateurish, but because I was misled to believe that it was something that it is not, a professionally conceived learning tool. I hope this helps.... Dwayne

American Fire Fighters demoted for not speaking Spanish
DwayneEMTP replied to EMT City Administrator's topic in EMS News
Because it's unrealistic with the current political climate. Should we expect it? You bet! Can we realistically expect it? No... Our forefathers learned the language because it was necessary to survive. If they wanted to work, to feed their families, to have a place to live, they needed to be able to communicate. That is no longer the case. We (Meaning our government/society) have taught immigrants that it is not necessary to learn English. If they suffer from that ignorance then we'll create a program to resolve it in a way that doesn't unfairly thrust personal responsibility on them (tongue in cheek of course) I get as indignant as anyone about this. But I get even more indignant by ignorance such as: We don't really care what pisses you off when you simply rant like a child. This is why this situation doesn't change. Too often you hear people make such comments but can't be bothered to vote, or to develop an intelligent opinion that they can productively share with others. As long as we continue to rant and cry like children the communion that is necessary to create these changes will remain beyond our grasp. So, again. Should we expect immigrants to learn English? Yes. Can we expect it any time soon? I don't believe so. Dwayne -

Ok, so perhaps you don't need his s/s, but I would like them. Hell, he's full grown, been given advice to see his doctor, which he'll take or not. After that, what makes this different than any other case study? I've read his posts, he's not an idiot. Allowing us to learn from this experience in no way that I can see is going to cause him to decide to make the logical decision to visit his doctor, or not. Why does the fact that this happened to someone we know somehow lessen it's educational value? Exactly. Which is why the logical thing to do is to explore it and learn from in. This is one of the rare occasions that we have a patient, can explore the issue, and compare our logic to that of his doctor's when/if the etiology is uncovered. How is that a bad thing? Again, what was said the would lead you to believe he's not going to follow the advice given? I've posted many personal/professional issues for opinion on the forums without ever considering allowing them to be the final word. Advice is advice. Allowing online advice to replace your doctor is idiocy. PCB has proven many times he's not an idiot. Just sayin'... Dwayne

You know, you're not very clear on the s/s before or immediately after "dropping out", but I am hearing this... Hyperventilation (Which I'm guessing is paired with tachycardia), tingling in hands and feet, confusion...and you have the very real possibility that this adds up to an anxiety attack. Maybe it is that straight forward. How do you figure? He's at the clinic half an hour after he passes out, we then have the drive home. (Which makes your post silly as, one, he's already stated he made poor decisions, and second, doesn't sound as if his decision making ability was intact anyway.), How long does it take someone to compensate for the loss of a pint of blood in your world? He should have done so long ago. There is a pathology here, whether mental or physical. Pretty interesting question. What are the odds you can give us your s/s as if you were writing your own PCR? Dwayne

I'm with Wendy. It probably wouldn't hurt to tell this story to your Doc... Also, remember that there were many variables in play before and at the time that you started to feel better. Because it happened not long after taking the sugar does not make the two related. The two events may have simply been coincidental. (For instance; any chance you (laid/layed? Hell...) became comfortably supine at home while waiting for the sugar to have an effect?) I will be interested to hear from others that may have seen this before about the possible etiology. Dwayne

Should People With Infectious Diseases Be Allowed in EMS?
DwayneEMTP replied to Lone Star's topic in General EMS Discussion
Ah, but see LS, there's the rub. It makes no difference how you feel about it. It only matters if an uneducated public would choose to be cared for by someone that had never been injured over someone that has had a serious injury in the past. That is what this thread has established above all, as it certainly hasn't established that there is any logical, mathematical, scientific reason for removing HIV/AIDS/HEP workers from the field. You pose a larger risk than I do as I've gone several decades without a serious injury, so if there is .001% chance that you are a higher risk than I am, then you are morally and ethically obligated to remove yourself from the field. Hasn't that been your argument? I mean disease is not the only danger to patients...right? And many thanks for taking my comments in the spirit intended, to be direct and accurate, not demeaning or insulting. Dwayne -
Hematoma could more accurately be thought of as an encapsulated bleed. It is a bleed, yes, but contained in a pocket created by the tissue around it. A bruise would be a contusion. Still some bleeding, but most often dispersed throughout the local tissue without creating the 'pocket' necessary to make it a hematoma. Hemorrhage, which I think most correctly simply means bleeding. As in 'internal hemorrhage' or 'uncontrolled extremity hemorrhage' etc. Bleeding as in the two examples above, but will likely need intervention to be controlled as it's not limited by tissue or 'capsule' space. Does that help? Dwayne

Should People With Infectious Diseases Be Allowed in EMS?
DwayneEMTP replied to Lone Star's topic in General EMS Discussion
LS, address this question/statement and I promise to run as far away from this conversation as possible and never come back. I've asked this at least twice, and perhaps as many as four times (No time to explore it) in this thread yet you continue to ignore it. It's a simple question really. Have you shredded your certs and moved on to another career? I have a lot of respect for your opinion on many things and am curious to see your logical answer...This is my last shot...then I'll assume you've chosen to stick to the easy questions... Dwayne -

DwayneEMTP replied to spenac's topic in Education and Training
You know, as I don't have anything productive to add to this conversation, and I'm always looking for a way to bloat my post count, I'll just say this... Wendy, I demand that you stop such postings as the one above. You're a basic, which means that in no way should you ever make me feel foolish, as I'm an 'almost' medic...Please remember your place. In the future I would appreciate it if you would include misspelling, poor grammar and some reference to medics wasting time on scene in all future posts. Failure to do so would dictate that we may need to take basics, on a case by case basis, at least somewhat seriously. And that can not be allowed...even by a basic with a BA in biology Thank you for your understanding and in this matter. I'm just sayin'.... Dwayne -
American Fire Fighters demoted for not speaking Spanish

Welcome to EMTCity where you're expected to make an intelligent and logical argument. I for one like Kaisu's analogy to 'equipment'. (Though it's me, not her, carrying the analogy forward as I doubt she would ever look at human beings as 'equipment') If you choose to work for a company that employs 85% Hispanic speaking workers...and you want to be promoted within that company, then perhaps you had better learn to 'operate the equipment'. She asked a logical, intelligent question. Why, instead of this silly verbal ejaculation, didn't you simply answer it? Am I happy with the state of immigration in the U.S.? Not even a little bit, it's one of the main reasons I moved from California. But if the U.S. is going to continue to complain about it, yet encourage it, then things are going to get a little hinky for the "English only!" crowd. I am one of those that believe that we have room for only one national language...My government feels otherwise...So what is the next productive step? How would you resolve this issue? And of course I mean logically...not some "kill the Mexicans!" crap. Dwayne
