Paying for medic school; can't think up a creative title
DwayneEMTP replied to brentoli's topic in Education and Training
I don't know a good way...but I'll tell you my way. 5a Out of bed. 6a At the job site. 1p Home to study the flash card my wife made while I was at work. 4p Leave for school 10p Home from school 10p-11:30p read chapters for next class (Mon,Tues,Thurs,Friday classes) (For me, not being the brightest bulb on the tree, 4 1/2 hrs/day is the minimum I can study and not flounder) 12a Back to bed Wed, Sat, clinicals from 6a-2p then to work until 6p, then reading or flashcards. If I think I have a snowballs chance of being caught up then I take my family and my books to the mountains on Sunday..but not always. So far this has kept me with a 3.54gpa in medic school...not what I'd hoped for, but at least I haven't flunked out yet. I spent my years from 0-12 on a working cattle ranch and from 13-19 on a Minn cash crop farm and I can tell you this is the hardest thing I've ever done. I will truly find some way to curse the 'counsel of elders' here for it someday... I don't mean to dissuade you, just to help you get into the mind set that it might not be easy... Good luck! Dwayne (Oh yeah, and when I think it would be much better to gouge my eyes out with thistles than look at my books for one more second...I come to EMTCity..) -
nick46928, I can see where you're coming from...but let me explain where you went off into the ditch. First, amongst friends "my theory" and "a theory" hold very different meanings. Her theory needs no proof as she was sharing it with us as friends...save you're bitch slapping comments (though funny) for when she submits it to a scientific journal. Second, you made a common newbie mistake. Wanting to show everyone how smart you are, you accidently jumped on one of the smartest people on this board...Not a bad thing in and of itself, but you should have shown a little respect. Look at some of her previous posts and you'll see what I mean. Third, be glad she is not the bitch slapping sort, as she is perfectly capable of of verbally smacking the shine off of your eyeballs... You had some good points, I'm simply suggesting that before you take up a grand cause in the future that you get a feeling for the context of the post and that meant by the poster to save you looking so silly. Disclaimer...Eydawn certainly doesn't need defending by the peanut gallery...I just happened to have a few minutes and decided to butt in.. Have a great day all. Dwayne

Yeah, you won't be quite so smug next time you need your 'oil checked'...so to speak. (Oh...did I hit the ' button? I hate it when that happens, as I was obviously commenting about auto maintenance) Dwayne

That is funny!!

Clear as a bell here...I think you guys are just old! Did you try squinting? Dwayne

Ahhhhh...thread! And we've been needing a becksdad/teddy reference for a while now...Michael's been slacking! (reaching for the slacks reference) But did you miss the fact that it's Dust's party...probably no clothes allowed! Dwayne

See...that's why you're my favorite island girl in the whole entire world! You know, you are pretty dang smart for a 19 year old... I truly hope that not one single thing in the entire process is easy. This has been so much more difficult that I expected between work, school and family, I don't want to come out the other side feeling like I missed something. Or that I somehow should have come out stronger. Not exactly sure. I believe it rotates between AMR and fire in the Springs. I don't have the details yet...I'll be more specific when I can. Thanks for asking though... Grin...Yeppers. It's not really that I'm afraid, cause I'm not. I ask these questions in the same context that I would ask what the proper dress would be for the party you invited me too. I'm not afraid to show up in Jeans, but would prefer to know what is most acceptable ahead of time instead of attempting to adjust later. Know what I mean? Hmmmm...I'm guessing you mean a general "you", otherwise I'm not sure where I gave you the idea I can't handle it. On that note, I am perfectly prepared to accept that both my tutor and teacher have been jerking my chain about this whole thing..and if so...kudos to them! Absolutely nothing wrong with the new kids paying their dues. Mostly what got me thinking after they said these things were stories, some on here, about EMS pranks. People peeing in peoples boots, putting syrup in their hairbush, drugging their coffee...etc. I'm not the most sophisticated guy on the planet. If you crap in my boots it seems the world is much better off if I simply make you eat it. Not very diplomatic, but handy for stopping such behavior in the future. It's these kinds of things I most wish to avoid. I certainly hope to be questioned, tested, challenged, teased, harrassed and God willing anything else that comes from the process of becoming part of a team. It's the disrespectful, property damaging, hazing nonesense I've gotten a little old for. Thanks for your advice everyone! I'm thinking it can't be a big deal, and I really am looking forward to it! I tend to get a little nervous as a follower...but I imagine I can take it for a few hundred hours... As I'm writing this I'm thinking chaser would tell me...finish todays homework today, tomorrows exams tomorrow and the rest when it gets here.... Ok...yeah...I'm gonna do that.... Have a great night all! Dwayne Edited for spelling.

Well, I survived the first semester of Medic school, barely. But have some questions about precptorship, though it's a while off yet. I have been told since the beginning that going from basic to medic was going to be difficult. And I've found it to be so. I've also been told that others that work in EMS will not be happy that I haven't done so. I believe I've seen that as well...not a biggie. What I'm wondering is...I hired a tutor, full time medic working on his Masters in biology to help with some things I was having problems with, and he warns that I'm going to be miserable during preceptorship do to the biases I'll see from the crews I ride with. From my tutor: "Zero to hero is unpopular to those that worked as basics. They will make it hard for you" "Paramedicine is pretty much a young man's game. They'll figure that if you didn't know you wanted to be a medic before now, you shouldn't be allowed to be one at 43." "EMS is ego driven, preceptors don't want you to be as smart as they are, and many will try to make you miserable if they think you are." He doesn't seem to share these sentiments, he was simply trying to prepare me for "The Real World." From my lead instructor: "I'm afraid you're going to find preceptorship very difficult and uncomfortable. There's not really anything I can do to help with that, you just need to try and survive it." So....Some of you may know I'm not exactly a whiner. Normally. So I'm not afraid of what may happen, I'm afraid of the consequences of my responses to what may happen. I can be teased, corrected, chided, even insulted in the right context. I don't believe I'm smarter than anyone, don't have anything to prove, and have no issues doing the grunt labor while people invest their valuable time to train me. What I won't allow is people putting their hands on me in an agressive or offensive manner, people taking, moving or damaging my property, attempts at humorous insults that involve my wife or son, or pretty much anything else I've come to believe was left behind after kicking the 5th grade bullies ass. I'm not nearly so worried (though worried is a little strong) about being employed. I've been employed, I know how to draw boundries and stand up for myself. Having been an employer I have a pretty good idea of my rights, and my options when situations become untenable. I've just never been in the student (More or less powerless) role in this context before, where standing up can mean a worse learning experience or being sent home, to move to the end of the preceptor line. What do I have to take? What can I expect that I won't like, but should tolerate simply because it's part of the process? How many people should I expect to try and cross that line? Anything else I should know? Thanks all...Have a great day! Dwayne

Serious queston. How much would that woman weigh? And why do I see the same people reading this persons posts over and over and then complaining about them? I've seen that you guys are capable of serious debate...why do you keep choosing this easy one? After the 2nd or 3rd post that wasn't my thing I just quite opening them. I only checked it out this time because I saw AK was in here before and it made me curiuos. If you look closely before you enter a thread, you'll see the name of the poster...save yourself some heartache. Dwayne

Once again, nothing would make me happier than reading the headline that says "Couple badly bruised in wiffle ball bat mugging!" North quoted the stats of other countries that have less gun violence because they have less guns...honest question...Did they have guns to begin with? Was Canada at some point over run with gun owners that were somehow convinced to give up their guns? What did you say to the crack heads, rapists, muggers, gang bangers, etc. to convince them to do so? It seems this questions is often asked..and always ignored...How do we unring the bell?? I will happily give up my gun when you convince me the people that pose a threat to my family will be unarmed as well...How do we make this happen? Not sniping (no pun) at you North, you offered very valid stats...I just wonder if they really apply when you're comparing the "have, but want to take them away" to the "Never had"s ...know what I mean? Have a great day all! Dwayne

Hey all, I have a'sort of' assignment to find as many valid street names for the drugs below as possible. It's for a running contest we have in class, so the more that I can get the better. Also, if you should happen to blindly guess, or slip in some invalid names or purpose (not that anyone at the City would find that amusing! ), I will look like an even bigger idiot than usual when I try and defend my submission in front of the class...I'm just sayin'... Thanks for the help! Heroin Methadone Cocaine Crack Cocaine Methamphetamine GHB LSD Marijuana Oxycodone PCP Thanks again all, Dwayne.

Perhaps I missed it, my apologies if I did... Now that everyone and their ugly sister has a weapon, how do we unring the bell? Nothing would make me happier than to beat my gun into a paperweight in a gun free country. All I need is an intelligent explaination as to how we disarm the country without leaving the scariest people the only ones with guns.... I don't believe those of us that have been victims of violent, life altering crimes will consider the gunless options until this question is answered. Dwayne

This discussion is not meant to make people think, it's only design is to give him the opportunity to restate his monthly "Christians are idiots" crap. It's the same discussion, with the same shallow arguments, all over again. It has no more purpose than his icon...to be rude and draw attention to himself without doing anything intelligent to earn it. At no point that I'm aware of was I made spokesman for the world council of Christians. Come on PRPG, what has that got to do with this question? Or, are you stating that Christians, as a group, are violent and dangerous so he is doing a public service with his non-stop childish attacks? Wow. Because there was religious injustice we now “owe” him his petty, childish grandstanding? Ridiculous. Not so long ago when my opinion was in oposition to another EMS site, you found it very offensive, and were very much opposed to my stating what you felt were inaccuracies on the subject. Yet somehow peoples feelings about their religion are less important than your feelings about that website? Many, I think, will find that logic faulty. Besides, go back through his threads and you'll see that when I was newer I sincerely participated, and even supported him on occasion, in quite a few of these discussion. Now that I've been here a few days I understand he has no interest in discussing, only preaching and attempting to upset. He's not sharing his opinion because there is no one here that is unfamiliar with his opinion on the subject of Christianity or American EMS, the only subjects he seems comfortable discussing at length. Your point here is invalid. Christians believe in Jesus, and God. Most of us find peace and joy in this belief. Most of us believe that we are unable to prove that these beliefs are valid so don't claim them as scientific fact. None of the Christians on EMTCity (to my knowledge) have publicly attempted to convert vs-eh? or have tormented him with their religious beliefs, so my question stands. Speaking of tolerance, what about my question was unfair? Why did you quote it and then not bother to answer it? I feel it is absolutely valid. Is it possible you were intolerant of my question simply because it came from a Christian? I hadn't noticed you taking offense to any of vs-eh?'s questions above. Why the joy in attempting to dissuade people away from their life long, cherished beliefs? Where do you find happiness in damaging peoples lives? Have a great day! Dwayne
-
It seems as though that statement alone should explain most of the issue Doc. If you write a book that convinces thousands of people to follow you, worship according to your beliefs, and is still the subject of worldwide scholarly studies 2,000 years from now...I'd be willing to bet people will take a good, hard, long look to see if it has something to offer them personally and/or add to their lives. (not trying to convince you the bible is valid, simply attempting to answer your question) But, once again...this whole thread was just vs-eh?'s way of regurgitating his tired old lines on religion...I almost took his original question serious for a second...psych!! Since this thread is already so far off in the ditch...I have a question for vs-eh? Let's assume the majority of Christians are similar to those that have expressed opinions in this thread. Tolerant, kind, have a strong sense of self and community. They find peace and joy in the knowledge that doing right today pleases their God, and also that he has prepared a place for them to languish in peace with those that they love after their death. This is a communion that they enjoy for themselves, yet enjoy sharing with other like minded people even more. What kind of damaged person finds so much happiness in attempting to steal that from them that he can seem to think of almost nothing else? You once trumpeted your victory over the faith of one of the most intelligent people on the board by sharing a private conversation you had had with them...Not only were you shallow enough to betray the faith they had in you to keep it private, you started a thread to gloat about how you had destroyed her faith in God! How you, being so strong, and so smart, were able to remove all of the above things from her life! You couldn't wait to tell the world! (of course non of it was true and she made you look like a monkey) So I ask you hotshot, you've asked the motivations of Christians about 100 times on the City alone...what motives you to do this? Why does attempting to damage peoples lives bring you such joy? Dwayne

help with diferential/provisional diagnosis please :)
DwayneEMTP replied to icekayak's topic in Education and Training
See..My point exactly!! icekayak, for future reference. One of the few things that will make you look more foolish than being unable to form a proper sentence, with all that that entails, is lecturing to someone else...and then being unable to form a proper sentence with all that that entails. So, after proofreading my previous post, and those that followed, paying special attention to the correct use of capitalization, I would like to thank my City friends for giving me Hell to help assure that I will do a better job tomorrow than I did today. As my previous post didn't go far in regards to teaching the proper use of grammar, I would now like to change my focus to the teaching of the proper use of criticism. I'll attempt to do so by thanking my betters for taking the time to correct not only my post, but my attitude as well! I hope now you will understand what I meant above by the statement "no offense intended." Have a great day all!! Dwayne Note: This post meant in all sincerity. Although my grammar is often far from perfect, I'm grateful to Michael, Chick and others like them for helping to keep our board from taking on the appearance of a teenage chat room. -

help with diferential/provisional diagnosis please :)

What are you looking for? The definition of the terms? How they relate? When each applies? I googled and found a bit of info pretty quicky...I'll bet you could too! No offense intended. It's simply that students are gladly helped, but are expected to help themselves first and then ask specific questions. Also, if you'd like people to take your questions seriously you should use capitaliziation, and proof read you sentences. It's simply a matter of respect and will get you many more, serious responses. Check google and type in "differential diagnosis", follow the first link...and go from there...good luck! Welcome to EMTCtiy! Good to have another student! Dwayne -
Were we supposed to find some semblance of coherence or rationality in that ridiculous rant? Where? (In the future, please turn off Jerry Springer while posting...thanks.) Dwayne

Hopefully, as medic001918, implied, everyone has gone back to their neutral corners and it can continue in the spirit intended... Dwayne

I'm torn on the subject. I have nothing against gays in general. Though I have strongly disliked some gay individuals. I'm not comfortable making the moral judgment, yet I don't want them sharing their opinions of their sexual lifestyle with my son...at any time before he's been well laid a few times at least. The thought of gay sex makes my skin crawl...But they aren't asking me to have sex with them...and there may be a few things that happen in my bedroom they would not be so wild about either... I also believe it can be biological. I can't prove it, but can tell you with certainty, having trained animals for 20+ years, there are examples of all species that will only mate (attempt to mate) with the same sex. Believe me or don't...it's true. For me it boils down to this. If you believe there's a God, then he made gays (if he made everything). So he either intended that there be gays...Or he made a mistake. (The free choice argument really doesn't hold up either if you've ever had the opportunity to discuss the subject with an intelligent, educated gay person that knew they were gay in the 40's and 50's.) I choose not to choose. I'll treat them as any other neighbor. I'll be happy for them to teach at my school...if they're good teachers, go to my church, if they share my beliefs (and if I went to church), live next door and barrow my lawn mower...I won't bow to them because they're different...and won't treat them different until I see the need. I'm unwilling to judge what I don't understand. I have no idea what it means to be gay...or black...or female. So until I get struck with some type of divine knowledge, I guess I'll just have to treat everyone the same...with respect and dignity, until they prove to deserve otherwise. Have a great day all! Dwayne NOTE: I have to choose: None of the above.
