  1. This is the best post on this thread...Something he can learn from instead of get pissed at and ignore. Follow the advice given, understand that what has happened is not a childhood prank but has real, life long consequences. Change your behavior and be an influence in the behavior of your friends and coworkers from here on out. I've done some incredibley stupid and immoral things in my life, I've gotten passed them...you do the same...Good luck...And what ever you do , DO NOT post here attempting to explain your actions. Dwayne
  2. Ruff, I don't see the issue. Unless this is a trick question, it would seem you would re-glove and carry on... Dwayne Edit: Sorry...didn't notice I was in the ALS forum.
  3. http://www.pensacolanewsjournal.com/apps/p.../611280323/1006 "Most recently, the jurisdictions of the fire district and Rural/Metro were scrutinized after an Oct. 29 dispute about whether air or ground transport was needed for a Midway-area baby. Rural/Metro ambulance service had directed that a Baptist LifeFlight helicopter was needed. Midway Fire District paramedics said only ground transport was necessary. The baby died the following Monday at Sacred Heart Hospital after being taken off life support. Medical examiners said the death was not affected by the transport time, which was 50 minutes." Would it seem that this is a private company V the fire dept? Wouldn't someone have the ultimate authority on this scene? From this piece of the article it sounds like the firemen were able to cancel the hlicopter...This confuses me... I'm not armchair quarterbacking, I guess I just don't understand the politics involved here. What was the motivation to stop the helicopter with a 50 minute ground transport time? Perhaps it would have taken longer than that to get a chopper and then turn it around? Sorry all...I guess I'm not really sure what I'm asking. I guess it's sort of a "What is wrong with this picture" (If anything) kind of question. Have a great day all. Dwayne
  4. I found that learning the parts of words previous to their combined application (They are listed in the front of each chapter in my A&P text) makes all the difference! If I was going to start over I would begin with the terminology before ANYTHING else as it applies to everything you will touch upon. Knowing that myo-=muscle, osteo=bone, cardi-=heart, -logy=the study of...and on and on....It just seemed to open the material up to me. Anyhow, it's just a thought. Most here are smarter than I am..this is just my .02. Dwayne
  5. To all EMTCity members: In the future please refrain from using AK, Dwayne, and spanked, in any combination, in any single sentence...thank you for your cooperation. Dwayne
  6. Man, I had hoped that you might actually come to have something to offer here, yet I still have been unable find a single post where you back up your mouth with evidence of any type of knowledge the involves saving people instead of killing them. And for your information, because you don't seem to be able to see it on your own, every time you attack AK you make yourself look foolish. I'm glad you are proud of your military service...I'm proud of you for it. But if that is the ony way you can define your life, if you don't need to be kind, smart, and competent as well...Well....good luck to you. B*llshit. You are going to serve your ego. You have proven that your ego is the driving force in everything you do with each and every post you have made here. Just in case I've read you wrong, could you post some links to Dust and AK's posts where they are attempting to impress people with their war stories, as opposed to medical, ethical, and political EMS knowledge. Then perhaps we can compare those posts to yours...The proof is in the pudding pal. This statement alone shows your power issues. Do a search for AK and you will see that better men than you have attempted impune his status here...Yeah, they failed too. If you want to spank AK...It's really very easy to do...Bait him into a MEDICAL discussion, and beat him down with knowledge...Make him look foolish and if he deletes your posts I will yell and scream right along with you. You will be able to kill (I use that word because I know it's your favorite) two birds with one stone. You will show everyone that AK is a faker, and you will show the City that your previous, ignorant, non-medical posts were a fluke and you should be taken seriously. Good luck with this... God bless you for your service to our country, I hope you come home safe. Dwayne
  7. I was talking to a guy in class the other night, an telling him about applying to AMR in CA for a basic position. When I took their employment exam I was told I did “exceptional”. And then on the skills section, I was one of three, out of ...I think...25 or so that made it through on our first pass. (CPR, deliver a baby, bleeding control, board and load a specified trauma vic, etc.) I have no idea how I did on the interview, though they didn't seem impressed. When I was later told by my instructor that they hired two classmates I was pretty confused. One was a nice little girl, very overweight (I think about 5 foot, maybe 150-160lbs) She was very smart, but so insecure that it was understood that she didn't get called on to do anything in front of class as she couldn't do so without getting very upset...shaking, stuttering...Even in our study groups she just listened because she couldn't answer questions with "everyone looking at her". Because of her weight she wasn't required to participate in anything physical with the rest of the class. (This was an academy, we did some push-ups and very limited marching and jogging.) The second was a little know it all jackass. Knows everyone, has an 'alternate' way of doing everything. I was told that it took him about 2 ½ hours to make it through the stations during the interview. He required additional help to complete his testing to pass the class. It's hard for me to imagine him being responsible for anything, much less EMS things. I was telling this guy from class that I couldn't understand what it is they were looking for based on these hiring decisions. He was telling me that he ran across an article on the net about poor hiring practices in place as people do not want to hire people that will A) Someday take their jobs, or Expect to work in an environment that requires more effort to maintain that what is currently being put out. He claimed that in studends followed by whoever created this paper, that a "C" student has a much better shot at employment than an "A" student. I just have a hard time with this theory. Though I can't really reconcile their decisions with the decisions I might have made faced with the same applicants, this just seems so petty as to be unbelievable. So was he right? Or is there something going on here that I don't understand? Thanks for your time everyone...Have a great day!! Dwayne
  8. Timmy, It's important that you understand that this is not just an 'ooops' in general terms. It's an issue that can define your character. Claiming someone else's work as your own (which I absolutely do not believe you did) show a complete lack of character. I would never again associate with someone that did this, there is just no point, as they have proven to be a thief and a liar all in one fell swoop. Not only do you not want to do it, you don't want to allow the appearance of having done it...be careful. Using someone elses work, though not claiming it as yours, without giving them credit is hugely disrespectful. Take the time to find out who's work it is...every time! If I couldn't site the source I wouldn't use their work, with few exceptions. (There are times I have used a funny quote found floating around the internet without an authors reference. If I couldn't find them through a search I would put "author unknown" to make it clear I am not claiming it as my own thought) You show promise for creating many bright new thoughts of your own, don't allow the waters to become cloudy with doubt as to their origin. Timmy, your contribution with this article is great!! I'm not trying to bust your chops...I just thought this info might help you in the future. aussiephil, what's up with chastising Timmy with a post that looks like a text message? Dwayne
  9. aussiephil. fair enough...I believed your issue was with cutting and pasting in general. You make very valid points, thanks. Dwayne
  10. "Vitals P-88-132 irreg strong" Is this showing a range for the pulse rate? I'm not criticizing, I've just not see a pulse rate described like this before. Dwayne
  11. aussiephil, Other than failing to reference his work (which is a HUGE deal Timmy) Why was the cut and paste inappropriate? Dwayne
  12. Good God, first becksdad in a teddy, and now you being spanked by a 300# EMT...I'm really starting to wish I didn't have such a vivid imagination.... Dwayne
  13. =D> Great post...If you can live without her...you should.
  14. Wow Asys, what a brave, honest response. It seems the answer to this question might be found in the way that we decide the value of human life. Having an autistic son I have given this some thought at one time or another. How do we value people? Why do we keep people alive that appear to have no realistic chance of contributing to society at any time in the future? A man in the grocery store once asked me why my son is different (which is a kindness to people with special needs kids), after explaining autism to him he said "Man, it's too bad you didn't know before he was born." (While abortion was a possibility) Yeah...I wanted to knock him out, but if I try and view it without emotion I can see his point of view. There is an almost 100% chance by boy will not be the next president, a doctor, scientist, a leader of industry, hell, he may never even have a job. How do I define my son's value to him and explain that the world is better off because he is alive? I would gladly slaughter half the people in my town to protect him...But I'm unable to explain, scientifically, why they should be happy he is alive or make any effort to keep him that way. How do we decide the value of the premie based simply on it being a human life, and what do we lose if we chose to devalue his/her life based on statistics? I have no idea what the answers are. On this subject emotion is such a driving force that I pretty much remove myself from logical discussion and leave it to those of you here much smarter than I.... Have a great day all! Dwayne
  15. PuzzlePiece, I'm not sure how to say this so you won't misunderstand and be offended...but I think you're hurting yourself with your attitude. I can't, and have no desire, to remember "crap". I assume you're talking about your skill sheets. So do you have another month to learn them before you test? I can tell you my formula, for what it's worth.... Grab a partner, or more than one, and start running down your skill sheets. Go until you make a mistake, have someone tell you what the next step is, and then start over from the beginning. Once you can do one subject completely, (they have a lot in common) switch to the next. Once you can do that one, redo the first...continue until you know them all, or have to vomit...Then vomit and start again. I think the first time I sat down with them I spent 9 hours with a buddy...I was hating it...but I hated not knowing it worse. Many people are smarter than I am and have their ways, I have to learn most of these thing the hard way...But I do think that until you decide it's important, it's not going to stick. (And I do believe you see them as "crap" as you have chosen not to learn them yet) Once you get them in your head it will become much easier (if you're like me) to start to understand that each step requires individual thought. It's difficult to pay attention to any one step when you're worried about the order of the next 3. Also, I'm not positive, but I do think that doing almost any step out of order is a critical fail when you test. Good luck! And if you're not busy on your ride alongs I'll bet they will be happy to help. Dwayne
  16. I read a book written by an ER doc. The only really good one I've ever read by a doc, EMT, or Paramedic. (If someone knows this story feel free to straighten it out...otherwise I'll tell it the best I remember...I can't find the book) Baby delivered in the ambulance, mom rushed to maternity (haven't worked in a hospital so I'll do the best I can with names and places) Baby is given to the ER doc. He calls neonatal (?), I can't remember what they did to stabilize the baby...and the Babydoc asks the baby's weight. The ERdoc tells him 450g (or there about), Baby doc says to let him go, babies are not viable below 500g. ERdoc (not ours) says the baby seems to be moving a lot, breathing well....hell...I don't know....he's making the arguement the baby is viable anyway...whatever that would take... Babydoc refuses....Long story short...the ERdoc is forced to leave the baby die in one of the rooms....He says nurses, paramedics, students etc, spend the DAY going in and out...holding it's hand...crying...until, hours later it dies and is taken away.... I don't know the answer to Ruff's question...but if this is what we're talking about...Well...I don't like it...It seems better to go whole hog, or end the suffering... By the way...I'm not claiming this story is true, only that I read it in a non-fiction book...and yes, I'll find it if it's important to verify to anyone I didn't make it up... Have a great day all... Dwayne
  17. The kind of folks that offer up this type of theory as scientific evidence tend to miss the obvious I think... Dwayne
  18. See..now why didn't I notice that...How does he explain an apple I wonder? http://www.nothingtoxic.com/media/11460509..._God_Via_Banana Dwayne
  19. Man, I hope you're at home right now.... Dwayne
  20. I'm not sure if this is funny...but it's pretty amazing. http://www.i-am-bored.com/bored_link.cfm?link_id=17367 The doctor seems to be saying that though the face is hollow, your brain refuses to see it as such based on your previous knowledge that faces are never hollow. Guess I'm gonna have to hit the library.... Have a great day all! Dwayne
  21. http://ap.lancasteronline.com/4/pa_aids_emt_lawsuit Philly, AIDS patient settle suit over EMT responders Published: Nov 13, 2006 7:11 PM EST PHILADELPHIA (AP) - The city settled a lawsuit Monday that accused Philadelphia officials of failing to comply with an earlier settlement over the treatment of AIDS patients . In September 2004, the Justice Department intervened in a lawsuit filed by an AIDS patient alleging that emergency medical technicians employed by the city refused to give him proper care. The suit charged that two paramedics failed to help John Gill Smith, then 38, when they responded to a call in February 2001 that Smith was having severe chest pains. Smith's partner told the emergency workers that Smith had AIDS so they would know his health history. One paramedic left the house with her shirt collar pulled over her face and did not return, while the other shouted at Smith, "Cover your face, or I'm not going to help you! If you cough on me, I can get AIDS," according to a statement from the AIDS Law Project of Pennsylvania, a nonprofit group that first filed suit over the issue in 1993. Under the terms of Monday's settlement, pending approval by a federal court, Philadelphia will pay Smith $50,000 in damages and provide city-employed paramedics with ongoing training on infection control and HIV and AIDS transmission. The city "thought that a settlement made sense" and did not admit any liability in the case, city solicitor Romulo L. Diaz Jr. said Monday. In the 1993 case, city officials agreed to pay $10,000, issue an apology and retrain workers on proper responses to people with AIDS. "Anyone who calls 911 needs to feel confident that the emergency personnel understand infection control," said Ronda Goldfein, executive director of the advocacy group. "We hope that today's settlement ensures that all of the city's EMT personnel are properly trained and are not afraid of sick people who need their help." Wan J. Kim, who heads the Justice Department's civil rights programs, said that vital emergency medical services must be provided in a nondiscriminatory manner to everyone who needs help. "The Justice Department is committed to ensuring that cities carry out this important function responsibly and in accordance with federal law," Kim said. Didn't this have to be just mean spirited? And even if they believed they were in danger, this is how they chose to respond? I just don't get it....(My opinion from the outside looking in) Dwayne
  22. It reminds me of a thread on Student Doctor Network... If you're up on a ladder, changing a lightbulb in the nude, please be sure there are no eggplants, vibrators, spare lightbulbs, etc, laying around, because you could fall..... Dwayne
  23. When I was a kid (maybe 17) I found my grandmother after she had died...The first dead body I had ever seen. When I called 911 I said "I think my grandma is dead...can you send an ambulance?!?!" He kept asking, "how old is she?", What is her name?" etc. In between questions I was saying "I don't know! She's always just been grandma! Can't we talk after you send an ambulance?!" He said "perhaps you should call back when you calm down!" and hung up! The ambulance showed up about 30 seconds later...I was probably freaking out...(can't remember, I haven't seen 17 in a while) But I'm thinking hanging up is probably not SOP. No point...just a story... Dwayne
  24. If I gave this answer at an interview and they said "your hired!" I'd have to say, "I'm sorry, I can't work for you, I have to go home and try to figure out what the hell I'm talking about." Dwayne
