  1. Yeah man, I'm with you. My entire time in school I studied a minimum of 5hrs/day outside of school. Every single day. And I spent the entire time thinking, "Man..if they would just take a break for three weeks, not add anything new, I could get caught up!" But they didn't slow down, and I did catch up regardless. But yeah, one of my preceptor Docs said, "I know it's like trying to drink from a fire-hose, but keep with it." +1 to Mobey for policing and educating in one pass. Dwayne Edited to add text in bold.
  2. Yeah, man. 'Specially when I still say the same things to you!! Fortunately Mr. Bieber is smart enough that he will soon see the error of his ways and be more careful about choosing mentors in the future. Glad you're busy Yeti, but miss your posts here. Be safe man... Dwayne
  3. Outstanding review of your evening! Yeah man, slow is slow. Sometimes it sucks. As to the female comments, how did the crew deal with the patients? In a kind professional manner? Or did you see the comments reflected in patient care? If the care was good, disregard the comments. You're seeing into their own little private world, and people that spend so much time together in such close proximity often go to extremes to entertain themselves. As preceptors, based on your comments, this team sucks and you should rate them in that manner, especially as you're very able to explain their shortcomings. I would value such a review very highly if that was my crew to manage. If people are too afraid to speak, then nothing ever changes and the shithead continue to rule the kingdom. And yeah, after dissing you for most of the night, his asking you to rate him highly was a majorly pussy move, and would certainly be commented on in my review. If your instructor doesn't thank you for your thorough review, then you need to be very, very suspect as to his value as an instructor. EMS is about learning, and very often we learn from criticism. There is truly nothing more enjoyable in my professional life that honest, concise criticism, even though sometimes it forces me to admit that I'm a jackass. What level are you now? What is the purpose of your ride-outs? Great post man... Dwayne
  4. I'm willing to guess that, if all that you've expressed is true, that being to old is not the issue, but being to mature may be. EMS is often looking for young ignorance that they can run into the ground working a gazillion hour/wk and not complain when they're treated unfairly. If you are in shape, represent yourself well, did well in school and are not full of bluff and bluster then stop looking for work in a the shitty places and look for the places that have severely high standards. They will likely love you. Well, also, how many calls/mo have you been running on your volly service? Many people hiring won't like volly experience as it tends to produce a lot of false feelings of grandeur (Something that the 'doctor' in your user id leads me to believe may apply) as well as many bad habits when considered for a professional organization. Having said that, some managers are going to be afraid of hiring someone that can see through their bullshit, but other than fire I'm not aware of any really good ones that wouldn't welcome a well conditioned mature practitioner. I was 40 when I graduated medic school and the oldest member of our class was 60 and we have both been employed full time as paramedics since graduation. Good luck brother. I'm curious to see if you are going to continue here, and participate. If you don't, you'll be cheating yourself, honest to goodness. Dwayne Edited to correct spelling. No contextual changes made.
  5. Fire often gets all puffed up with their macho bullshit. Some day when you're in the fire house ask if anyone has ever saved a pt from a medic and you'll hear on idiotic story after another about how intubation is idiotic, medics are idiots, how they've taken medics drugs from them and pushed them all themselves saving the day, yadda, yadda, yadda...whatever. When you spend your entire training being told what a hero you are, how balls are what save patients, not brains, listening to how the college educated medics may be smart but they just run around scared on scene!! it tends to queer your perspective a bit. You don't know how to get their respect? You treat them with professional courtesy. They earn YOUR respect. Know how you do that? The ones that work well, that are team players..involve them in everything. Let them bag, do compression, start IVs if they're allowed. Take the same ones over and over and soon you'll see that others want to be able to play too. Ok..bonehead stunt number one....almost certainly, when you stopped while off duty you weren't the highest level of care there. That may not be true if you're in a state that has a duty to act when off duty. And if your state does have a duty to act, it's possible that you are now guilty of abandonment. Do you know what they call a paramedic on scene without a jumpbag? A spectator. If no one was seriously hurt you should have been on your way as soon as the hosemonkeys showed up. They're going to be running around with collars and board and doing their thing...how can you really help them when most of what they are going to do is pointless anyway? Was it your intention to help them board and apply oxygen? You put yourself into a situation where you were destined to fail brother. I had a new medic on my current project that was upset because he had to wear his own shirts when they ran out of EMS shirts. He wanted to know how anyone could tell if he was a medic or not if something went wrong? I gave him my shirts and explained, "If there is an emergency and anyone there has trouble figuring out what role I play, then I'm not really being a paramedic, am I?" And I believe that. When I show up on scene everything concerning any sick or injured human beings is on me and I will not allow anyone to stand in my way. I have no ax to grind, but if you have some agenda that is apart from helping out team care for pts as well and efficiently as possibly, I'm simply going to run your dumb ass over. I'll ask for help, give kind instructions, and if you want to play then the call should be really fun and/or interesting. If you want to fuck with me I will have you removed. My believing that seems to be enough to allow others to see it as I've never had to do it. You need to decide that you are the highest level of care on scene. Are you under the belief that your medic cert was some kind of a gift? Did you not work for it? Did you not sweat blood to be worthy of it? People call you because you are the most well trained and dedicated person available. When you show up and defer to Sparky the Knuckle Dragger you've shown those people that they are fools, that you didn't come to be THE medic, but came to play at being a medic. I believe that you're one of the most inspiring new medics we've had here in a while...but until you decide to be THE medic, then I'd rather have a really good basic care for my family. You need to decide what you're role is my young friend. I'm sorry you've found this part of your moral/ethical obligation to be uncomfortable and hard. Wait until you need to protect your patient from the LEOs, or when the physicians kid is hit by a car in front of their house. You are there to protect your patients against EVERYTHING. There are some firemen that you will truly be inspired by on scene.. I have learned a lot from the good ones..but when they're not? Walk your ass through them, around them, and/or over them and do your job, OK? And then create paper and burn their dumb asses down so that MY family doesn't have to suffer while they play their stupid macho games. Dwayne
  6. Yeah, that's kind of the point...we have very little here that would lead one to believe that he wasn't alive and well the vast majority of the 96 minutes. A first responder doing CPR does not an arrest make. Though I'm grateful to you for exemplifying my point. Dwayne
  7. I find the comments interesting... Island worked for them for what, a week or less and is an expert. Lone, how long did you work for them? Not being sarcastic, truly curious. And you statement that 'they move into an area, take over and soon get their privileges revokes.." Rubbish. There is not a single company in the world that can stay in business if that is your 'habit.' I always find it interesting that those that have never owned a business are always experts on how a business is run. Despite how it may sound, I'm not defending AMR. I too know many that work, and have worked for them and the vast majority report being happy with them. Personally by far the worst, and my far the best paramedic experiences that I have had have come from AMR. I'm not defending them, but I am really hating all of the "This is what they do!" as, with any other fact you should make some attempt to back up such statements. I can claim all kinds of shit, but if I'm going to do so then perhaps I should feel obligated to provide a source. Dwayne
  8. By a show of hands...how many speaking here about what bullshit this is are black?? It seems to me that when you're part of the ruling class that it's pretty easy to hate on anything that may seem unfair. Blacks didn't start at the same starting line as whites in this country. Whites had gathered wealth, started corporations etc long before the first black was allowed into a public school. For things to be fair, people have to have equal chances. If I choose to go into business I believe that I have the same tools and opportunities of any other man in my social/economical class, therefor I can compete. Now should I have to compete with Paris Hilton, then the playing field is no longer level. If it is she against myself, then I like my odds. If it is me against her and her family money...then things change pretty drastically. Without a miracle I can't realistically compete in her world simply because here family tree got too much of a head start on me. (Of course my family likely had the same chances way back when, but you see my point.) Is the relationship between blacks and whites and opportunity all fucked up? Oh yeah. Unfortunately those that have been cheated now too often want a free ride instead of increased opportunity. I believe that many that claim that they can't pass the tests more than likely also qualify for financial educational aid. And if they don't then many should. How about instead of lowering the bar we raise the candidate? Dwayne
  9. Then you've not been paying attention. Dwayne
  10. So does screwing black hookers count?? Would I ever date an African American? I wouldn't ... if being American isn't good enough for you, if you need to separate yourself from me even down to your ridiculous title, then I have no interest in you at all. Would I date a black woman? Well, yeah! In a second! Some of the most beautiful and sexy women I've ever met have been black....(I have a really goofy story about a black prostitute that I hired in Dubai once...and no, I didn't end up sleeping with her...(see, that's what makes it a funny story)...But it was a close thing. Remind me to tell you in private) So, if I would have cheated with the black woman, that I purchased...(Ironic, right?) then I am ok in Crotchity's eyes, but having chosen not to do so makes me a racist? C'mon Crotchity...surely even you don't believe this 4th grade bullshit. You are an anchor to your cause brother. Every time you present a point you make blacks appear weak, and ignorant, and pathetic. That has not been my experience in general..I'm sorry that you would be one of their champions. As to his being banned, I am vehemently opposed to it. There is not one single person in this thread that was forced to be here. You certainly have the ability to ignore his postings..To consider banning him when he's not following folks around tormenting them is despicable in my opinion. Has he threatened anyone? Followed anyone around trying to make their lives untenable? Has he done anything else, that perhaps I'm missing, other that try and turn every topic to express his liberal opinion of the great white oppressor and the heroic but oppressed black man? I've not seen it. Even derailing this thread! He expressed his opinion, but it was the general disrespect that we've all showed for Wendy's topic that allowed this to turn into a shit storm. This has been a great learning experience. We should have stayed focused on the topic but instead chose to take the feel good Bash Crotchity path. If he should be banned for being an idiot, then the rest of us should certainly be banned for following an idiot. At least he was in the lead. To suggest that a person should be banned because they present an opinion that you dislike is the very worst possible direction that we can go here, in my opinion. Dwayne
  11. Well, there goes my last fantasy of being a cop! You are my hero..though I know that you meant "my patient, and any other potential patients." I've not ignored your previous posts... :-) I can't imagine what would make that a better answer...is there, like, an "Add 100" button here? I really, really wish that this was one of my posts... Dwayne
  12. Yeah...I give up. I've tried to give you the benefit of the doubt, but now I just think that you're an ignorant asshole. Another one of the gazillion times I would have found the truth sooner had I listened to Mike or Mobey.. Dwayne
  13. Of what? The OP, or what followed? There used to be a poster by the name of Windsong, several years ago I think...that would start these rants. Tons of people would get all shook up and the threads would never go anywhere...like debating with Crotchity except I'm pretty confident that he has a normal level of mentation and I'm positive that she doesn't. When everyone would get pissed at her she would disappear and come back under another ID, post the exact same type of post in the exact same way yet swear to the high heavens that it wasn't her when accused.... This kinda feels like that... Dwayne
  14. Yeah, right? I can't remember man of them..but the way of communicating is pretty distinct. Now, having said that, though she makes me batshit crazy, I do believe her to be mentally handicapped in some way..for those that haven't see her before you might want to keep that in mind when you reply. Dwayne
  15. Welcome back...Is it Windsong? I can't remember now for sure.... Dwayne
  16. Bless you Crotchity, but I can't for the life of me figure out where you became so perfectly qualified as a life adviser that you feel comfortable forcing people to accept help against their will? And old woman wants to stay home but based on your superman skills you are able to know what's best for her and force her into the hospital ... This isn't loving and caring brother...it's cover your ass medicine. Love says you protect her...you are only protecting yourself here. She's got nearly a century of falling down and knowing how it feels...leave her alone man.... A couple of kids get layed..you report them when they've chosen not to report themselves. Scar them now, likely scar them later, but at least you've covered your ass. This isn't loving "protect the children' medicine, as even the new, young medics see where this is going to get ugly..this is scared medicine. You preach doing good medicine, but both of the above decisions are protocol-monkey crap. You just simply can't justify them in a real world application in these scenarios as explained. I get the feeling that you are a really intelligent provider..I'm not sure if it's your "everyone should give me everything I want and do what I say because I'm black" attitude or something else...but even you are truly not smart enough to know what is best for everyone. Dwayne
  17. I sent 11/10 and email explaining that a ton of the people that cause me to keep coming back to the City posted in this thread...I would be flattered if I had all of you jumping on my opinion!! I hope he comes to see it the same... Excellent thread everyone. We maybe could have walked a little softer...but he didn't need it. He'll be back here, and I think he's going to be worthwhile... Dwayne
  18. I know that for myself that I am hoping that you're going to open your eyes and begin to see that no one is jumping your case at all. People are trying to tell you that some folks have fed you a line of shit, and you've fallen for it. That doesn't mean that your program is bad, nor that you will be a bad provider someday, but only that there are a ton of smart folks her trying to guide you but you keep responding with 'Why does everyone keep picking on me?" You have explained what it means to be a good medic to me, a half assed medic that has had the privilege to work with some really good medics, when you are not yet a medic. You explained to me the value of a college education when, I have one, you don't. I have done medicine on the streets, in Afghanistan, in the hospital, and now remote medicine on the oil spill in the gulf. And yet you want to tell me that my logic and attitude are substandard. Good on you, but be ready to back it up. The 'old guy' mentality I bring? I've been a medic for...say...5-6 years...I don't remember. No old guy shit here brother. Just guy shit. You explain your superior program and yet your skin is so thin that you can't see that you're not being attacked, but given advice, and you need it. There is no one in this thread that hasn't stood me on my head intellectually, and some have knocked my dick so far down into the dirt that I had to scrub for weeks to get the mud off, before I 'got it.' Mike, in just the last several days has called me out twice...once I agreed with him, once I didn't...but I promise you that nowhere in my response to the posts that I didn't agree with will you find the sentiment, "Mike, why are you so mean?" And you know why? Not because I don't care what he thinks..I very much care what he thinks of me and my opinions. But because it would never occur to me that he was calling me out simply to be an asshole. In fact everyone in this thread, including you, have have made me better with their arguments, not by whining. And it will be my privileged to lose arguments to you too if you stay long enough. And lastly, as I need to quit screwing around so that I can go to bed and get back up in a couple of hours..I thought that it was obvious that my comments were directed at your supporting another posters possible path of going to a nooner patch factory instead of a two year college. That was then, if I remember right, followed by you explaining that you intended to take the shortest, least educational route to being an RN. I didn't insult your school, as we hadn't even spoken of your school yet. But the attitude you have brought, up until your last two or three posts had wannabe whacker written all over it. I hope that I am completely off in the ditch as nothing would make me happier than to see you become a rockstar medic and make me eat shit every single day. Also, your last few posts showed some fire! And some actual debate! (Until you puked on your last one...but still, it's movement in the right direction!) You think that I think I'm Mr. Supersmart Medic? Go to my profile, jump back to my first posts and see what a complete whacker moron I was before these fine folks did for me what they're trying to do for you. I like to think that I'm no longer a whacker... But...you need to toughen up princess!! (See, a lesson disguised as an insult?) No one here is attacking you. They are teaching...you just seem to want to be coddled. You've been a basic plenty long enough to know that mentally, emotionally, and sometimes physically, EMS is a contact sport. So don't hold your breath waiting for the velvet gloves to come out, as no one here with any significant value is going to baby you. But if you trip and fall? Every single one of them, yeah, me too, will do everything in their power to make sure that you never hit the ground. It's what I love about EMTCity, and what I love, when it's there, about EMS. Have a good day brother. I'm truly grateful that you've decide to stay and have your say instead of running away like so many do after their first skinned knee. I have a feeling that you will be really good at this, and that you will have a lot to offer, and I look forward to learning from you. Dwayne Note. My apologies for errors. It's late, and I'm really really tired, but am afraid that this thread will be locked and wanted this to go out into the ozone so I didn't proof read.
  19. Agree completely. I stand corrected. And I think that I did avoid the trap...sort of. When I tagged this as liberal it was based on Crotchity's long history here as a liberal champion. It wasn't my intention to label the act of reporting as liberal so much as anything that Crotchity does as a liberal act, if that makes sense. I'm grateful for the clarification as it not my intention, no matter how misguided they may be, to imply that our liberal brothers and sisters would let their politics dictate the level to which they would protect their patients any more than the more well informed conservatives would. I'm playing of course, but I truly am grateful for the correction. That would have been a really ignorant, childish and petty political shot to take...and even I have some standards. Thanks again Mike. I would have hated to let that stand. Dwayne
  20. Hey man! Miss you here.... Dwayne
  21. You know..I struck the comment instead of deleting it in case someone had already replied before I got rid of it. I didn't want to make them look silly if they had. What I find interesting is that I edited it at noon, you replied at 1330, and yet there is not strikeout in your post? Why would you remove that?? You make the point brother that you don't have any money, want want to take the quickest class and believe that that is good enough if you can pass 'the test' and are ALREADY planning on taking the easiest, laziest way possible to RN in a couple of years, right? Do I follow you around watching you get a hardon when you drive lights and sirens? Of course not. But I don't have to. You've told us, plain and clear that you are not here to be a good provider. You don't want to be a superior provider. You just want to get shit done as fast, and cheap as possible. Are you really proud of that approach to your paramedic career? Are you suprised that I didn't jump on board to support someone that simply wants to pollute my career with more ignorance? Unfortunately you decided to follow spenac's lead and bitch and complain instead of taking a moment and creating an intelligent argument concerning how you felt about my post and why you felt it was unfair. That's too bad. Based on our other posts I'm confident that there is more to you than that. Did you notice that he even attempted to imply that I gave his post a negative, though I certainly didn't. It's what he does...you are following a really bad example. You post on patient care was stellar, and as I busted your balls here a little bit, if you click on the + in that thread you'll see that it came from me as well. Or did you just decide to be pissed before reading that thread? I want nothing more than to see you succeed and I will do everything I can to help you do so if you want to. But to pretend that taking every shortcut is a good idea, to support you when you throw tantrums instead of debate...that is not support brother. That is feel good bullshit that will make you feel good today yet make you cry when you try and support your family someday. This isn't a hobby man. You don't win because you get to ride an ambulance. It's medicine. I think that you likely have the ability to help people. But the attitude that you've shown in this thread is not a healthy way to go and I won't actively help you fail. In the future it's really pretty simple. If you don't like my posts, ignore them, if they have no value, hit the - button, if they're wrong, then step up to the friggin' plate and explain why. Cryin' don't get it done. Dwayne
  22. Not very...it never does. This will be followed by maybe one more post here, and then a few status updates about how life would be glorious if people just didn't attack other people for no reason...sniff sniff....That will be about it. But what the hell...popcorn is good for you, right? Dwayne
  23. Holy shit! The exact sentence that I posted in one of your threads, right? Man...that is beyond pitiful. Good God..you are such a cry baby!! You said that it would be better to get a degree because it would transfer over, and that is true enough. But you said that after you mentioned that if you can get your degree by sucking someones' dick then you might as well do that because you can't do anything anyway. What bullshit! There are tons of services that do real prehospital medicine. The have long transport times, little access to flight, and their services have actual standards for the men and women that work there. So because you think EMS sucks, your advice to those coming behind you is that you might as well suck too, so that you fit in right from the start? Bullshit again. When you are done wiping your tears from the horrible beating you seem to believe that I have given you (See, I'm convinced that the chicks here represent the major backbone of EMS. I can't think of a single one that would have blinked at the offending post, much less wept over it) perhaps you will be able to see that your post did in fact represent the very worst of the attitudes that exist in EMS. Dwayne And what was the thing about me kissing my own ass? I don't know what that means....
  24. Heh...yeah, thanks for the correction.. Awesome message, awesome attitude, grammar correction! I wish I could give it more than one point! Dwayne
  25. This attitude is exactly why you shouldn't take this kind of immature advice. "If I can pass the test then I'm as good as everyone else, right?" No man, you're not. You've managed to pass the very minimum requirements to be allowed to call yourself a paramedic. And you should be ashamed of that. Spenac following the whole "what do you call a man that graduated at the very bottom of his class at medical school? Doctor!" shit is just that, it's shit. It's what's holds EMS back as a profession and keeps people from getting paid. You'll find if you're here a few days that spenac loves to brag about how rich he's getting as a medic, what a superior education he has, how sage he is for the noobs, and yet you won't find him posting more than just a few lines in any forum that requires intelligent thought. Just keep that in mind. If, like 11outof10, your goals don't extend beyond getting to giggle while running lights and sirens around town in your ambulance, then yeah, follow his advice. If you want to make EMS your career, truly want to be a professional and do more than play 'mother may I' in the back of your fancy truck, really want to do medicine, then get a real education. At the VERY MINIMUM you need college level A&P. People will tell you it doesn't matter...but I've got to do some pretty friggin' cool things...most of them due to akflightmedic being my friend and opening doors...just take your 100 day medic cert to him and see how far that gets you. Good luck to you...I would love to know what you decide. Trust me, the National Registry Medic test? Most of us could have passed it straight out of basic class with the addition of a little A&P. It's simple, stupid, and a completely worthless way to judge the value of a paramedic education. Dwayne Edited to correct a formatting error. No other changes made. Edited again to cross out the sentence above as after reading his next post I realized that I was being a way bigger shithead than necessary.
