*bows to the Great Anthony* I'm in absolute awe! I just hope that when I grow up and start doing that kind of stuff, I'll be as cool under fire as you obviously were!! Have one on me!

I'm currently in the EMT-B/EMT-I program at Savannah Tech. I was an EMT-B in MI for 12 years. After I go through this portion of the course, I'm looking at doing My A.A.S. for Paremedic Technology at Savannah Tech as well.

Working 24 hour shifts with the opposite sex
Lone Star replied to jwraider's topic in General EMS Discussion
I've worked the 'night shift' and also 24 hour shifts with members of the opposite sex. Nothing happened between myself and my female partners, because we were both professionals. I know this has all been said before, but if there is trust issues on behalf of your spouse/mate/significant other, they need to be addressed. As far as the old adage about 'if it's offered, a man will take it' is pure BUNK! It IS possible to have a platonic relationship with a member of the opposite sex, even if it IS in a 'remote/secluded' station! Even IF your shift partner were interested in 'something more personal', it appears that you're dedicated to your spouse/mate/significant other and aren't interested in any 'extra cirricular activities'. I'm of the firm belief that no matter how 'interested' someone is in me, if I'm not 'on the market'....the 'interested person' can't have anything other than friendship. It doesn't matter how much that person wants something 'more'. My suggestion is just like most of the rational responses. Have your wife/girlfriend meet the partner and maybe then she'll realize that your shift is nothing more than two professionals doin thte job they were hired to do! Another thing you might consider, is to give her a tour of the station and point out where you are, and how your partner is in the 'other room'. -
Lights and sirens are NOT neeeded on every call. Interfacility transfers do NOT all need to 'run hot'. Transporting a patient (regardless of condition) by 'running hot' is dangerous, and in most cases unnecessary. EMS is bad for overusing lights and sirens. Remember, by the time you get the call, the 'emergency' is usually over, and the 10 seconds you've saved in response time isn't going to do much for your patient. Everytime you 'run hot' with a non-critical patient, you put yourself, your partner and the patient at unnecessary risk. If you're involved in an accident while operating lights and siren, you're automatically 'at fault'. Save the lights and sirens for the patients whose codition warrants emergency transport!

[NEWS FEED] $23 Million Won't Keep Trauma System Healthy
Lone Star replied to News's topic in Welcome / Announcements
Living near the only Level I trauma center for southeast GA, I can tell you that we're spending way too much money bailing out Wall Street, and rewarding businesses that are sending our jobs overseas, instead of taking care of the things that REALLY matter. With more and more people losing their jobs to outsourcing, the hospitals are still obligated to take care of these people, regardless of their ability to pay. When these people that have lost their sources of income, they can't pay the extremely high bills that are incurred if they get hurt or sick. I think the current administration needs to re-evaluate whats REALLY important and stop shelling out money to just anyone and everyone that holds out an empty hand. -
Tack my name on the list as well. Just PM me for the email address. I'm currently in school, but was an EMT-B for 12 years. LS

[b]Cause for Alarm Why do we need this law? Some will say the bloodborne pathogens standard of the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) is sufficient. This isn’t true, because 1) OSHA does not have jurisdiction over state and local governments in about half of the states; 2) the bloodborne pathogens standard does not provide a clearly stated post-exposure procedure to be followed and does not give clear time frames for testing and notification; and 3) OSHA does not provide the clear coverage of volunteers that the Ryan White Law provided. What If OSHA Doesn’t Apply? Another problem with the OSHA BBP standard is that it doesn’t apply to state and local governmental employees in about half of the states. State and local governmental employees are covered by federal OSHA standards only in states with occupational safety and health plans that have been approved by federal OSHA. Federal OSHA has no jurisdiction over state and local government employees in the following states/territories—which don’t have OSHA-approved plans—Alabama, Arkansas, Colorado, Delaware, Florida, Georgia, Idaho, Illinois, Kansas. Louisiana, Maine, Massachusetts, Mississippi, Missouri, Montana, Nebraska, New Hampshire, New Jersey, North Dakota, Ohio, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, South Dakota, Texas, West Virginia, Wisconsin, Washington, D.C., and Guam. http://www.jems.com/news_and_articles/arti...w_repealed.html http://www.jems.com/news_and_articles/arti...9/now_what.html

I've noticed that one way into chat is to post 2500 posts. Recently, I've noticed that my post count keeps getting smaller. I've had to break the '1,000 post count' 3 times already. What's happening to the posts? I should be somewhere around 1400 or so by now!

The course I'm in right now is a combination of EMT-B and EMT-I. I have the option to test at the EMT-B level (complete with the NR testing), but since I don't plan on stopping there, I've elected to bypass the EMT-B level testing and only test at EMT-I. Once that's done, I'll be taking the Associates degree course for medic. Yes, I'll be testing for the NR at that level too. While I was in MI, I wasn't required to test for the NR and didn't. Unfortunately, that ended up working against me in New Orleans, and again when I decided to get back into EMS in GA. Yeah, the NREMT-B looks cool after your name, but having the NR certification just opens many more doors than not having it. My reccommendation would be to go ahead and test for it and keep it current. You never know what the future will hold in store for you, and it could come in handy! Not only that, but if your state doesn't require it, just simply having it would tell your employer (or future employers) that you're not satisfied to 'get by with the bare minimum of training and education. We need more 'go getters' in EMS in order to show that we're not 'just a drone', but professionals!

Well, it's official! Mike's admitted that she's not his daughter! We already knew that just by looking at the pictures!

Welcome Back! Glad to see you've come to your senses and returned to the fold!

I think that the current 'rating system' supports a claim of 'false advertising'! I smell CLASS ACTION'! When they hit that stage, it kind of makes you wonder what goes on inside their little bodies! Somehow between the 'in time' and the 'out time'; the amount of food you've put in seems to have somehow doubled or tripled in volume!

Hear that gurgling sucking sound? You know, the one that reminds you of someone trying to get the last drops of a McDonalds shake? Thats the sound of your program sucking on my EMPTY bank account! Life sucks, don't it?

I asked mike if his wife ended up stretching his bottom lip over the back of his head, and his only reply was "I didn't know she was THAT strong!" As far as a 'frilly dressed girl with a firearm', isn't that why they made .32 ACP and garters?

I just got off the phone with Canadianmedic, and found out that his wife just had their first child! Baby Rachel was born at 1607 hours MST. She weighed in at 7 pounds, 6 ounces and is 20 inches long. Aside from some minor 'setbacks', mom and baby are resting and doing fine! Dad's spending the night at the hospital. Hopefully we'll see pictures of the new bundle of joy soon! Best of luck to you and Mrs. Canadianmedic, and Rachel as well!

I'm thinking the concept is the same, regardless of the language......

When a child gets their ears pierced on the whim of the parent, if the child decides that they don't want their ears pierced, they just let the holes close up, leaving a small tell-tale scar that will eventually fade. What if the male decides that he didn't want to be circumsised? Will they be able to revert back to their preoperative condition? Of course not! I've noticed that the biggest proponents of male circumsision are FEMALE! Look, this country is more than willing to fork over tons of food, medical care, etc without getting a dime in reimbursement, but yet they can't pass out condoms? Give me a break! Good hygine habits and safe sex will also cut down the transmission of STD's, including those listed in the article! Disfiguring a males genitals isn't the ONLY answer! Of course we're 'protective' of our penises! It's no different that women being protective of parts of their bodies! Roe V Wade gave women absolute control over their bodies, and the decisions that they make in regards to what happens to them. Are men not accorded the same 'protections' and 'rights'? To summarilly dismiss forcing males (even in this country alone), to conform to some 'cookie cutter mentality' of what is 'proper' and what isn't, is more than just 'bovine excrement'. The removal of tonsils and appendix was done prophylactically, because they were determined to be of little or no value. Today's doctor's hesitate to simply remove them as a matter of 'standard procedure', because they've come to the realization that removal of healthy tissue is against moral and ethical standards. The same should apply to an infants foreskin as well! Yes, there have been studies done to determine sensitivity issues between circumcised and uncircumcised males. Those studies have determined that there IS a 'loss of sensitivity' in the circumcised males. Not to mention that there ARE reports of 'botched circumcisions' that result in forced gender reassignment. In a study released by the Canadian Paediatric Society (Revised 02/2008), it clearly states that with religious and personal values were not included in the assessment, the panel concluded that "Circumcision of newborns should not be routinely performed." http://www.cps.ca/english/statements/FN/fn96-01.htm Validation: This recommendation is in keeping with previous statements on neonatal circumcision by the Canadian Paediatric Society and the American Academy of Pediatrics. The statement was reviewed by the Infectious Disease Committee of the Canadian Paediatric Society. The Board of Directors of the Canadian Paediatric Society has reviewed its content and approved it for publication. In 1971 and 1975 the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) took a stand against the routine circumcision of newborns on the basis that there are no valid medical indications for circumcision in the neonatal period. Ultimately, the conclusion of the report is this: "The overall evidence of the benefits and harms of circumcision is so evenly balanced that it does not support recommending circumcision as a routine procedure for newborns."

You're assuming that the only reason they were being chased is because they were here illegally; Fact not in evidence. I know this is going to come off as jaded, cold, hard hearted (or whatever other term you feel like inserting at this point), but when the officer ordered them to halt, they should have STOPPED running! EVERYBODY knows that when you run, it only makes a bad situation worse. It's not a difficult concept to follow!

Let's hope the kid didn't have beans and cornbread for supper the night before!

Only if they're in this country LEGALLY!
