There's one thing that everyone seems to be forgetting here..... Emergency Response Vehicles that traditionally respond in 'hazmat areas' MUST be equipped with diesel engines. That is FEDERAL MANDATE. Since diesel engines do not have distributors, spark plugs and spark plug wires (obviously they don't require a spark for combustion), there is less chance of a diesel motor igniting vapors that have reached the 'explosive range'.

The Ultimate Wacker Kit (no Joke) 5k Spent On It
Lone Star replied to mmeronk's topic in General EMS Discussion
The main thing to remember here is that the owner of this kit has no medical training or education. If he violates the 'scope of practice' of the mulitmedia first aider, there is no 'Good Samaritan Act protection' afforded to him. The key phrase to the Good Samaritan Act is that the treatments rendered would be the same treatments used by a similarly trained individual in similar circumstances. When you start injecting morphine, lidocaine and setting IV's, you've violated the key phrasing of the Good Samaritan Act. Remember that if an EMT-B uses balms, salves or lotions, that is a violation of their 'scope of practice', even if it IS only 'OTC' stuff! It is realistically impossible for me to know all the state and local laws from around this great country, but I DO know that in MI, if you have syringes, IV starts, laryngoscopes/ETT's in your personal 'first aid kit'...you're in a world of shit! Rural medics that carry these kits tend to only use them on actual patients that have called for an ambulance. I'm sure they don't carry them around for the implied 'cool factor'. http://www.answers.com/topic/good-samaritan-doctrine -
The Ultimate Wacker Kit (no Joke) 5k Spent On It

Ideally the person with the kit WILL get the training. REALISTICALLY, the person that has the kit is carrying around controlled narcotics, and other tools that he is OBVIOUSLY NOT trained to use! I've seen some of the Zombie Squad's 'promotional videos'. I've seen NOTHING there that indicates that they're anything more than a bunch of 'Buffy the vampire slayer' wannabe's. To me, these are the same people that predicted the 'end of the world' with Y2K! You say that the pictured 'first aid kit' isnt as 'extreme as we want to make it out to be'....what would you call running around with just enough controlled narcotics (and no training to put them to use) as well as just enough 'OTC and medicine cabinet rejects'? As has been stated in many posts (by REAL Doctors), there isn't enough of anything other than the morphine to really do anything 'productive'. Endotracheal tubes with no oxygen, none of the 'basic equipment' is there. One or two bags of NS, a bag of D-50...no BGL meter.... Since Paragon has admitted that he's not trained in using a pulseoxymeter, what in the hell is he/she doing with IV starts, laryngoscopes, etts and injectible narcotics? Even the 'Good Samaritan Laws' wouldn't protect him/her because of the equipment they possess and would probably attempt to use! Furthermore, I'm sure that even Paramedics can't carry half that stuff in their own private kits, and they're EDUCATED AND TRAINED to use it! As far as I can tell, "Zombie Squad" is nothing more than a rag tag collection of anarchists with more money than brains! -

HI DOCTOR NICK!! Tell us Doc...how many times did you write precriptions for injectable morphine, just so they could stock their own ALS jump kit; or any other drug for that matter. I'm seriously doubting that you've done it at all... As far as these guys go (Zombie Hunters), I'm seriously begining to question whether they've got all their screws...I gave up on wondering how many of them were loose! -

Nah, I think I'll just leave that to the zombies, they're much better at it than I would be! -

First off, would you want YOUR name associated in any way with a group like that? Second of all, I'm thinking that once you're trained in the art of 'zombie warfare', no one can tell you ANYTHING! -

So, umm...Chris......how many, uh, 'zombies' have you hunted down and 'eliminated'? What's the best method of terminating these 'zombies'? Garlic? Silver bullets? Wait...I got it...a wooden stake through the heart! *wonders how many ZS tattoos Chris has* Could it be that education teaches us to focus more on 'quality' than on 'mass quantity'? -

You mean that amonia inhalants aren't some 'miracle cure' for unconciousness??? Isn't Levaquin used for treating malaria? (Secondary to Primaquine) -

Remember, the guy carrying around all of these CONTROLLED SUBSTANCES won't get a pulseoxymeter because he's not 'trained to use one'. Logically, how many people are allowed to carry around these kinds of drugs (and the means to administer them), that AREN'T trained to use a pulseoxymeter? Remember further, that this is some clown that calls himself a 'zombie hunter'..... Kind of reminds me of 'internet vampires' that can't stand the sight of a raw steak! -

I'd actually like to find a Doc that would actually be an advocate to something like this! I'm thinking that someone somewhere is about to lose a license for this! -

Looking at this 'first aid kit', I can see LOTS of legal charges coming from its use: Practicing medicine without a license Sale or distribution of prescription medicine without a license Possession of controlled substances with the intent of distribution Violation of any and all EMS state/local protocols I'm sure that just the sale of these 'kits' would violate federal drug laws! -
Well, it looks like there's more 'Michiganders' than I originally thought! I lived in Flint, worked in the Metro Detroit area, but am currently 'stuck' in GA.

It still amazes me how many people still look at entry to EMS is all about 'how fast can I get into an ambulance?' and cannot function past 'the book says' mentality toward patient care! Experience is good for things like HOW to administer care, but you have to know WHY you're even doing a certain procedure in the first place! Knowing what outcome to expect from a drug, or other procedure helps you deal with the 'odd case' where it 'just didn't work'. You also are ready to do 'something' before too much time elapses and it becomes 'too late to do anything'! I'm not saying we all need to eat a PDR, and memorize every page of it's contents. BUT... Knowing which major groups of drugs interact with each other (both positively and negatively), definately helps when you get a reaction! Knowing WHY you're giving the drug (or doing a speciffic procedure) in ANY situation is a MUST! The ONLY way you'll know this, is through EDUCATION! While I think there are some 'time wasting classes' in a degree program, I'm fully prepared to take them, and devote as much time to them as they deserve. However, the 'important classes' that relate directly to the reason I'm in college in the first place will be of a higher 'priority' than those b/s classes required by some collegiate board of reagents (or whomever decides which classes are needed to get a degree).

You know what, Ruffles? EVERYBODY who runs EMS has room to 'second guess themselves'. It's what you do with it that matters! Now I have a couple questions for you: 1. You stated that the family was feeding him jelly prior to your arrival, and that the pt's BGL was 82. A. Isn't 82mg/dl still within the 'acceptable average' for BGL readings? B. How long between the administering of the sugar and the BGL reading you took? C. How high does a BGL have to be to be considered a 'diabetic emergency'? D. How long does this type of 'sugar bolus' really last? E. Was his BGL meter properly calibrated? There's quite a few variables that had to be taken into consideration, and at the same time you have to act...for the benefit of the patient. That's alot of information you have to process all at the same time, and some days, it just don't matter what time of the day it is! Electronic devices are notoriously 'fragile', and you can only go off the information you have at the moment. Ultimately, you learned something, and isn't that a 'good thing'?

Let's not forget those insufferable whiners that cut across the wrist with a steak knife instead of following an artery. Ahh yes, the drama kings and queens strike again! I realize that most 'suicide attempts' are nothing more than a plea for attention, but if you're truely 'serious' about ending your life...the least you can do is DO IT RIGHT!

It's official! I'm going to refrain from making any comment on this post. The last time I did, I got called an 'ignorant redneck' for my views, and have since been treated like a paraiah. I'm not going to set myself up for that again!

Well, I just did a search on my name, and I found out that I'm everything from a 16 year old kid who's good at playing golf, to a coach, doctor, police sergeant, doctor, teacher...... I wonder how much 'bad stuff' I can post on the internet, and then blame on them? roflmao :laughing3: :laughing3: :laughing3: :laughing3: :laughing3: :laughing3: The OP stated a prime example of why I REFUSE to have 'myspace' 'facebook' or any other 'social network site account!

Well, it looks like she's now losing her 'publicist'. I mean what does a resource sucking 'welfare cow' need with a freaking publicist? It's not like she did something that should be celebrated! It's just another woman who wants to sit on her backside and suck up resources that could be better used by someone who REALLY deserves them! Why make her rich and famous for raping an already strapped system? Why is the system 'strapped'? Because of people like her that would rather sit on their lazy ass and pop out kids instead of getting a job and living within their means! I've noticed that the public is ready to do in the publicist (who is working pro bono) for making this woman a celebrity. Rather than vilify them, direct your anger toward those that truely deserve it; the doctor that allowed this travesty to happen, and her! She shouldn't be getting 'book deals', commercial opportunities; or any other welfare generating celebrity status! Since it looks like this has already been offered, I hope that the state of California does the 'right thing' by making her pay back the system for all the support that she's recieved! [align=center:b1376f5340]Octuplets mom's publicist calls it quits Public relations group steps down because of death threats, its chief says[/align:b1376f5340] LOS ANGELES - The public relations group that represented octuplets mother Nadya Suleman is stepping down because of death threats, its president said Saturday. Joann Killeen also said the mother now has an agent: Wes Yoder, the same man who arranged book and music deals for the McCaughey septuplets a decade ago and publicity for controversial pastor Rick Warren. The Killeen Furtney Group was ending its free representation after receiving at least 100 graphic e-mailed threats and swarms of nasty voicemails that went to the Los Angeles agency and even to some of its other clients, Killeen said. Some messages threatened Suleman but others were aimed at the publicists. "They'd put me in the wood chipper and throw me in the bottom of the ocean and hope I die," Killeen said. "We've gotten her through the worst part of it and now they are putting their venom and anger toward us." Word that the 33-year-old single unemployed mother was receiving public assistance to care for the 14 children she conceived through in vitro fertilization has stoked furor among many people. Police are investigating the threats. "We've never had a public reaction to us representing a client pro bono like this, ever," Killeen said. But Michael Levine, a longtime Hollywood publicist who has represented pop star Michael Jackson, said he gets about one death threat a month. "Death threats have about as much impact on my life as me saying 'Happy Valentine's' to you," said Levine, adding that he received multiple threats when he represented Jackson. Suleman, who gave birth last month, is living at an undisclosed location. She has set up a Web page to accept donations to help the octuplets, who remained hospitalized. Meanwhile, Killeen said Suleman told her that she had reached an exclusive representation deal with Yoder. His Ambassador Agency Inc. bills itself as the oldest Christian-based talent agency in the United States. Promoting multiples, Rick Warren The agency, which has a Nashville mailing address and a street address in Franklin, Tenn., promotes speaking engagements, publicity and media deals for clients. Killeen said the agreement with Yoder and her agency's decision to step down were unrelated. She had not yet contacted Yoder and was unclear on the specifics of Suleman's deal with him, Killeen added. A call and e-mail left for Yoder on Saturday were not immediately returned. A decade ago, Yoder was the spokesman and agent for Bobbi and Kenny McCaughey, the Iowa couple who had the world's first surviving septuplets on Nov. 19, 1997. They were later involved in book, music and TV commercial deals. He also has represented Rick Warren, pastor of the evangelical Saddleback Valley Community Church in Lake Forest and best-selling author of "The Purpose Driven Life." Warren gave the invocation at President Barack Obama's inauguration — a choice that drew criticism from gay activists because Warren supported last year's successful California ballot initiative that outlawed same-sex marriages.
