2. I found an interesting article on MSN today. Granted I'm gonna end up taking some flack about it, but hey...I didn't write the article! Don't hate the messenger because you don't like the news! College Kids and Monkeys About Equal on Math[/align:34ab4ddb78] It doesn't take language to do numbers, researcher explains.[/align:34ab4ddb78] By Robert Preidt FRIDAY, Feb. 13 (HealthDay News)—Many primates are capable of basic math and pre-verbal "number sense," but it's the use of language to explain abstractions that allows humans to take math to much higher levels, says a Duke University expert. Elizabeth Brannon, an assistant professor of psychology and neuroscience at Duke, studies how human adults and infants, lemurs and monkeys think about numbers without using language. Her goal is to identify brain systems that support number sense and determine how this cognitive skill develops. "Number [sense] is one of the more abstract domains of cognition: Three coins and three loaves of bread are very different concepts," Brannon said in a Duke news release. "Yet, many studies show that babies, even in the first year of life, can tell the difference between quantities." She's found that both human infants and macaque monkeys who've seen the same number of objects repeated in different-looking sets recognize when there's a new number of objects. She also found that college students and macaque have similar speed and accuracy when doing a rough sort of math by summing sets of objects without actually counting them. It might come as no surprise that non-human primates have some fundamental sense of numbers. "There are all sorts of reasons why number [sense] would be useful for nonhuman animals in the wild," Brannon said. "In foraging situations, animals need to make decisions about how long to stay in a given patch of food and when to move on. Territorial animals may need to assess the number of individuals in their own group relative to competing groups to decide whether to stand their ground or retreat." Learning more about the biological basis of number sense might help early childhood educators, said Brannon, who's currently trying to find out how the human brain changes to accommodate symbolism as a child learns the names of numbers and starts to understand more abstract math concepts. "If the nonverbal number sense is really providing a critical foundation for math achievement, then this will suggest teaching methods that provide more grounding in the nonverbal quantity system," she said. Brannon was to appear Friday on a panel at the annual meeting of the American Association for the Advancement of Science. http://health.msn.com/health-topics/articl...&gt1=31036#
3. So far it's come to light that she's recieved somewhere near $165,000.00 in workman's comp payments over the last decade, then there's the disability money that she's been getting for 3 (need valid reference on this) children, and the 'social assistance' that she's been getting (she doesn't call it 'welfare'). All this while living at home with mom (who has been 'chipping in' as well).
4. Not only is she on welfare (whether she calls it that or not), but she's been doing pretty damn well on workman's comp payments for the last 10 years! What really gets me though is, she's pissing and moaning about how that lady that gave birth to the first set of octuplets got all this stuff donated to her, and this 'welfare cow' didn't get anything! I'm sorry, but it seems to me that if you do this INTENTIONALLY while on welfare and other 'social programs', don't expect those that are footing the bill to be too awful damn happy about it! As far as the doctor that allowed this to take place...I'm thinking sanctions, loss of priveliges, loss of license....SOMETHING has to be done to punish him and make him 'reconsider' his ethical and moral obligations!
5. Lawd he'p us! The 'future of EMS'? Now we'll NEVER get his ego through the doors! *Note to Admin* Please install larger doors, so that Dust can continue to join us! :laughing3: :laughing3: :laughing3: :laughing3: :laughing3: :laughing3:
6. This is the closest I could find for sale: Can I keep it??!??! [-o< [-o< [-o< [-o< [-o< [-o<
7. Since you live in TX, you might not recognize that 'white stuff'. That's called 'snow' and I ain't talkin cocaine! As far as the ladies go Doc, I don't think that after looking at me, the ladies wouldn't be interested even if I drove a Lamborghini! I DO get 'cool points' though for the motorcycle, (especially after I figure out how to bolt a set of those cool trailer lights on it!!). :D/ :glasses1: :glasses2: :glasses7: :laughing5: :laughing5: :wav: :laughing3:
8. Zach, Here's a picture of my vehicle. Notice that even after 15 years in the Fire Service, and 12 years in EMS, I do NOT drive a retired 'police vehicle' and also notice the lack of 'emergency lighting' (whether 'factory' or 'improvised'! It IS possible to run with a Fire Department or an EMS company WITHOUT having to 'mark your vehicle'!
9. I'm presuming that this (or something very similar), is what the O.P. is referring to as 'trailer lights': I got to admit, that after looking at these....I want a set bolted onto MY car too! Maybe I can find a way to bolt a set onto my motorcycle too!!! [-o< [-o< [-o< [-o< [-o< [-o<      Harbor Freight
10. Ok Phil.... Time to stop suckin up the sympathy and quit layin about! Get better soon! LS
11. Ruffles, I have to tell you...if you start foaming at the mouth, the only 'humane thing' left to do is have you put down! Clearly there needs to be a Whacker Association, dedicated to finding a cure for 'whackerdom' and 'whacker-itis'. Too bad Jerry Lewis is already obligated to the MDA! Zach, Just because you're 'best buds' with the local cops in your little one horse town, does NOT excuse you from having to know state and local laws concerning decking your p.o.v. out as a 'super cop car'. Using reflector tape to spell out the words "Fire Dept" on the side and back of your car is NOT enough to qualify it as an 'emergency response vehicle', even IF it 'used to be an old cop car'! On top of all the reflector tape/decals and other 'markings' you have, the mickey mouse dollar general store approach you have to your 'emergency lighting soloution' only serves to reinforce your image as a 'wanna be junior coder'! Knowing the state and local requirements for what is and is not allowed for marking an emergency vehicle is REQUIRED! Knowing if your P.O.V. can even qualify as an 'emergency vehicle' under the motor vehicle code of your state is also a REQUIREMENT. My suggestion to you is this: Rather than spend all this money, time, and effort to try to mark your vehicle as an 'emergency response vehicle', you might be better served by furthering your education and getting into a 'real department'!
12. This is PRIME example of why they constantly drill in to your heads in EMT class: The best defense against litigation is DOCUMENT, DOCUMENT, DOCUMENT!
13. vehicle = $1,000.00 "emergency scene lights" = $5,000.00 Watching your vehicle battery implode when you turn on all the lights....PRICELESS!
14. Based on those 'values': INTELLIGENCE = 105% COMMON SENSE = 133% No wonder so many revert to attitude, bullshit and ass kissing!
15. Another case of W/N/L = We Never Looked?
16. EMS as a general rule (at least the ones that don't wear badges and other 'uniform shiny things' usually get the patient to admit more than they would to a police officer. If we start arming EMT's (of any license level), we'll lose that 'edge' that we currently possess. This can, in turn, affect patient care. Not only that, but as its been said before; there goes the public's trust. In this day and age, it's common to hear someone say "F**k the police!" or other disparaging remarks toward the police. Do we REALLY need that kind of hate/distrust in EMS? Another point against arming alot of the EMT's (again, license level not withstanding)...if we remember a few months ago, there was an EMT that killed his partner with a manual defibrillator. Is that REALLY the kind of person you want to have running around armed???
17. I agree about the 'craptastic shift'! As a Firefighter, I had to test for vehicle operations (gotta love the 'cone zone testing'! I'm pretty sure that the testing was required by the state, but aside from a copy of the test results in my personnel file (the original was sent to the State Fire Marshall's Office), there were no special licenses, certificates or other 'additional papers' I had to carry. The service in Detroit had a EVOC (in house). Upon completion, then I was allowed to drive. What was funny was that they said that the Type II van ambulances were harder to drive than a fire truck!
18. Bob Barker always said that all pets should be spayed or neutered. It's the 'responsible' thing to do!
19. HAPPY BIRTHDAY EVERYONE, EVERYWHERE! :occasion4: :occasion1: :occasion5: :occasion2: :occasion6: :icescream: :occasion7: :occasion9: :wav: I think that should just about cover it all!
20. They predict that they can put a man on the roof of a 5 story building in about 2 seconds. What they've failed to mention is that you spend the next 3 minutes falling into the basement!
21. The State of Michigan actually exempts EMT's Firefighters, Police Officers and farmers/farm workers from having to have an 'appropriate license for the weight class and/or class' of their professions. I can drive fire trucks reguardless of weight class/restrictions, ambulances (without needing a chauffers license; since people are paying for transport), as long as I am working in the capacity of that job. This provision actually worked in my favor while I was working in Detroit. It seems that management tried to get me to 'fill in' on a wheelchair transport vehicle, but I quickly informed them that while I may have been in an EMT uniform, I wasn't working as an EMT, and therfore the 'exemption' no longer applied. In addition to that, in order to LEGALLY work in the non emergency transport division, I needed a chauffers license, and at that time, I didnt have one! Further, I am exempt from having to carry certain papers on my person, as an EMT, Firefighter, Police officer, as long as I am responding to/from a call on the most direct route. I got pulled over on the way to a fire call one early morning, and no ticket was issued because I couldn't show a valid drivers license at the time. The officer surmised that since I could gain access to the fire hall, that I was indeed a member of the department. It also helped that when he 'dropped in' after the call, I was working on getting the trucks back in service....
22. If you doubted it was real, then why forward such a 'dire warning' without checking it out? It's real easy to go to www.snopes.com and check it out before posting it. Which leads back to my original question...do you post this stuff to see your name in the Top 30 posts all the time, or just to boost your 'post count' hoping that it will increase your 'credibility' in here?
23. That's what I usually do as well. I mean, if it sounds outlandish (like this one), one would have heard something about it on the news! Most people are caught up by the line 'This happened to a friend of a friend of mine', ' My friend is a laywer and she says this is for real!', or some such silly nonsense. These are along the same ilk as 'if you send this to 10 people in the next 10 minutes, your soul mate will call you, you'll hit the lottery for a billion dollars...etc' Let's not forget that Bill Gates is going to share his wealth with US!
24. First off, there is no 'criminal act' in calling a newspaper reporter. Second, when you try to get your name published in a PUBLIC FORUM, you can pretty much kiss any 'expectation of privacy' good bye! Thirdly, common sense would dictate that you don't go after the person that asked the 'right questions', but the person that divulged the 'right answers', if you want a 'secret' kept. There are no laws that I can think of that prohibit the seeking, verifying and/or authentication of information recieved. In fact, it is the 'intelligent person' that does so. Further, the act of trying to change the names of the individuals involved in the accident, to elicit sympathy could be viewed as an attempt (however unsuccessful it may be) to commit fraud.
25. I included statistical data that proves my point. Yes, ALL school shooters come from maladjusted families. I'm just showing that there are MORE 'maladjusted families' since everybody started listening to knotheads like Dr. Spock. To include people like Ted Kaczynski, Ted Bundy, Terry Nichols, Timothy McVeigh, Charles Whitman, John Wayne Gacy and Jeffery Dahmer et al is skewing the facts and ignoring the point I've established. Since the trend to move away from corporal punishment as a viable tool in the arsenal of raising children, it seems that we're doing MORE harm with the current way of thinking and dealing with our children. It was said that the reason you should give your children 'time outs' instead of spanking was because the spankings damaged the tender psyches and ids ...thereby making the child unable to live a normal, healthy life. Having grown up in a 'split family' I've seen both the abusive side of life, and I've also seen where spankings have been used as an EFFECTIVE form of discipline. I can be used to disprove that whole theory alone. I’ve never gone to prison, I don’t use illegal drugs, I don’t abuse prescription drugs and I’m not an alcoholic. I don’t abuse children, I don’t try to sleep with the family pet, and believe it or not, I actually came out of school with an EDUCATION. I wasn’t passed on from class to class because I put forth minimal effort, and I didn’t get to play on school sports teams because I showed up for practice. I actually had to EARN a spot on the team, and had to work my ass off to KEEP it! Yes, our teams got beat unmercifully in some sports, but we also returned the ‘favor’ in other sports. No parent flipped out over it, no newspaper tried to make us feel bad by showing us how we failed because we beat the other team. No, my generation wasn’t perfect….but by and large it’s turned out pretty damn well; despite what the ‘experts’ said about how we were raised! For my generation, the most commonly diagnosed (over diagnosed?) ‘problem’ was ADD/ADHD. Now the new one is that the child is ‘bipolar’ and placed on mood altering drugs, anti depressants, etc. We make up all sorts of new ‘syndromes’ to justify the child’s unacceptable behaviors.
