Actually, it is called "fist pacing" and yes documented to be effective as it can produce 0.4 joules. There is plenty of lit on it from AHA, Heart & lung. Way before there was TCP (up to mid 80's) this was routinely done if the patient crashed on you, and you could not immediately get a transvenous pacer in. R/r911

Ditto to Dust's comments. As an employer, I can assure you the Insurance company will turn you down no matter what the technical charges were. A life learning but costly experience. We have to deal with the results of drinking and driving, as well as those that understand what you do on your day off is your business but it can affect your career. One has to be responsible. The trooper was not aware of Paramedic White past when the unit was pulled over and when the confrontation occurred. Digging up the Paramedics past is irrelevant. Serious, he is NOT the one who attempted to choke down anyone. Yeah, I know about Maurice's past. I also know the services, the people, and the situation at those services. His methods may not be of my choice, and definitely do not agree 100% of everything he has done or said. I also know some people get tired after a while of the "good ole boy" attitude and when addressed to change, one may get a bad reputation. All I can say is , when attempting to develop Standards for Critical Care Paramedic, Maurics offered and was professional and alike many here on this forum prefers to want the best qualified and educated. Yeah, sometimes those thoughts also ruffles feathers and if not careful may be called a rebel raiser.... I know I have been accused of being one, but so be it. The only reason we do not see or hear about abuse of powers in some areas is that it is a usual occurrences. Guess what? There was no rioting nor the need of increasing protection, even when disasters occur, there is not. Do you want to really want to compare behavior within regions? I would not even suggest going there. Ironically, Toby Keith is NOT thought as a king, nor Vince Gill, Garth Brooks, Reba, or even Flaming Lips... Such popular personalities are not idolized as much as the local football team members. Personally I was disappointed that OKC did not throw Jessica Alba's butt in jail for recently placarding "save the sharks" poster around town. Yeah and you think us in the Mid-West are screwed up? It will be dealt with alike most of the occurrences that happens here. It will done after the line light will fade away. The reason this is such big news is that it is a rare occurrence. The trooper is toast, one way or another. Where and what they will do will be determined. One thing is certain, that this occurrence will never be tolerated again by OHP. This is quite contrary where I continue to see abuse of powers by cities and communities that have LEO fined, incarcerated but allowed to continue.

I suggest those that continue to state abandonment please read the true legal defintion of what has to occur. As of noon today, there has not been any consideration by the "higher up's" of abandonment. Sorry folks, it just not abandonment to leave your patient alone for a brief period of time. Creek Nation is unique. It is a service provided by Creek Nation Tribe. Unalike, some other tribal IHS that have EMS this tribe has an agreement to care for non-Native American Indians. They provide Paramedic level care & have a few CCP's. The Troopers are all quite aware of who, what, etc in EMS in these areas. The area is very rural and yes, is unusua for LEO to act upon EMS, and if they do they do it prperly. R/r 911

Franks (the driver) owns a local convience gas station/store. All the local LEO etc, come there to get a free cola. If you notice the Trooper even calls him by first name in the video. From all accounts, that is definitely NOT his nature or they way the trooper accounts that he stuck out his hand and flipped him off. The family denies such, and truthfully; it is doubtful that such a man of this would take the risks of doing so (yes, most of us here really do respect OHP), being witnessed by the family and attempting to make a curve. He did raise his hands up as .... What? As in, what did you want? Gesture. There is one criteria for dismissal to all State employees. Embarassment, and unbecoming representation of the State. He meets that criteria. Period. Many of us had felt at one time possible psychological etc... but; when pictures of "old bruising" and attempts to slander the Paramedic; this makes it personal. Even if the Paramedic has or had a bad past..... So what? He did not know that or was the reason of attempting to "choke" him down. He f*cked up, he knows it. Time to take be a big man and as one poster describes put his big girl panties on and resign. There is NO chance that OHP wants to allow him to make another traffic stop; as he wil be labeled forever. No District Troop Commander wants to have to monitor him and the potential litigation (real or not) will always be there for the State. Again, a high risk and reason for dismissal. Sorry, he only had two years worth of service. A hometown hero that lost everything in a matter of a few seconds. His reputation and ability to find LEO will be hard to with over a million hits of YouTube. If nothing more, this could prove as a good example to all of us to be sure to check our own attitude and performance. Aplogizing for attempted choking is a little far fetch isn't it? C'mon, what charges would you had placed on a medic if he had attempted to "choke down" a fellow officer? Yeah, let's play and think fair. Sorry, their job is to enforce not create the law. They interviewed CLEET/OHP Academy Training Officers and demonstrated the two approved "choke holds" neither was from the anterior approach and definitely NOT a pressure against the crich/trach as the Trooper performed. Again, against policy enough for dismissal. There has been NO proof of the driver "flipping" him off, as well. The trooper is the only one describing this. As the family was in the front w/EMT driver. Even the Troopers wife ( who was in the Trooper car) will not testify.....hmmm? Touching or interfering with a Medic is also illegal. So the Trooper actually commited the crime first, as well exiting the vehicle using profanity is just unexcusable. The trooper knew the driver quite well, and realizes different. If one studies the video, you can see the "ahh-haa" moment. When the Trooper realizes it being video recorded. Yeah, the ahh-haa my career is over. There are too many with the Wyatt Earp syndrome out there. Not actually. He is really surprised by the + comments and attitudes. There have been nurses and some other health care professional willing to donate for legal funds. I don't believe he is accepting anything. Maurice has been known to rock the boat, as one that is a pro-patient and EMS profession advocate which many do not like. Personally, if he does decide to get on a circuit. Good. I talked to some of the Paramedic co-workers yesterday. Mr. White (Maurice) will never be a rich man from this. There is a limitation which is nominal (especially after attorneys fee) and truthfully would be less than most Paramedics yearly salary. If he settles out with a no trial, it would be about $ 30,000. So no, if he does pursue it; it would never be for the money or any financial gains. This of course has been the buzz especially in the areas that this occurred. Now, attempts to tarnish the Paramedics reputation and rumors of his past (work, etc) is trying to be brought up to discount the event. In reality, no matter the past, the incident should not had ever occurred. Period. What we are hoping is a learning point to have happened. Introduction of behavior modifications of how OHP academy teaches, (as it is known to be one of the roughest) and behavior and attitude of all LEO and EMS personnell. Something both sides can learn from. That both sides really should have only one goal but allow and respect each others position and role. This has at least awakened some of the public to the dangers within our profession. Unfortunately, one would never had thought it would come from the law enforcement side. R/r 911

Since when did "Emergency Care" become an legal authority? Seriously, Emergency Care.. surely you could cite something a little more detail than a basic textbook (at least a decent one). I have discussed this with the "authorities" that do govern the license of the Paramedic and of this time, no instance or grounds of abandonment has been considered.

I would like to add that the Trooper had his wife with him at the time. One of the reasons Paramedic White, initially jumped out of the unit. It is not unusual in these rural areas for LEO and Troopers to have an injured/ill person and stop or summon an EMS unit. The Trooper has scheduled himself for a press conference Monday and a decision has not yet been made by Troop Commander. This has reached all branches of the government level including past the Governor to Senator level. Unfortunately, OHP just asked for a pay to prevent furloughs to occur. I am sure there is some heated discussions behind closed doors. The only good thing I see coming from the horrible event is we (EMS) have been lobbying and promoting EMS bills heavy for the past year, with minimal outcomes. This has at least put us in the "light" and recognition of legislatures. Maybe, they will pay attention to us now. Ironically, one of the newest bills (has not taken affect yet) is a Felony rating of touching, interfering or obstructing EMS personnel. .... R/r 911

I believe we will see a new OHP by this fall. Apperantly, this is not the only problems that has occured. Currently there is another investigation regarding the air divison as well for usage of aircraft not associated with duties and exchange of parts and monies. I know it has sparked the interest of lawmakers. I have to say I am proud of Maurice White (the CCP) demeanor and composer during this event, he definitely has represented EMS very well as a professional. R/r 911

Here's the deal. Your a kid. Go get the education and maturity for the health profession. No one (respectable) is going to hire you until you are over 18 at the least and more than likely 21 to 23 years of age. Study about the profession to see if this is really what you want to do until then. It is nothing alike on television. If you still decide to be in EMS, and you have completed an accredited Paramedic program, you will be of legal age and the chances of being employed then. Until then, be happy being a kid, have fun and if need get a job for life experience. Sorry, you won't find one in EMS. R/r 911

The kid does not even know how old they are. Just barely into high school and we want to encourage EMS?....Kidding right? Most respectable EMS will do a criminal back ground if they so happen to make it through the course and pass the EMT (of course they will probably lie about their age to take the test). Most respectable EMS will require the minimum age of 18, many will require 21 to 23 years of age for the insurance carriers rules. Again, propaganda spread to an eager person to sit in a EMS unit, when the real life will point out the best they might do is be able to tech a w/c van. R/r911

It was announced today that the District Attorney will NOT be placing charges upon any of those involved and informed all parties that they should all get along. Case closed at least for the legal part, except the tribal Chiefs are investigating possibility of violation and now let the civil suits begin. R/r 911

Yeah. I met with many of the State EMS leaders today. Of course this was a hot topic. I am glad to say that it has cooled down a bit and we all feel it will be dealt with appropriately both legal and civil. One of the State EMS officials did cite something we were not aware of that not only interfering with a medic (or medical person) while attempting to perform duties is wrong but to touch or interfere while doing duty is also illegal. Hence.. Trooper interfered and touched Paramedic.. thus violating law too. I did discuss the "abandonment" and as of right now, there appears to be NO abandonment. Could he hear and respond to the patient (if the trooper did not have him restrained? Yes. Also, some questions are now being brought up since this was a Federal vehicle and yes, that makes a difference. I just to point out; alike out profession there are several hundred OHP that are the best and most professional and one or two does not represent their profession in general. Also, I would hate to see the videos that could be produced by many following the majority of EMS within the U.S. We as well would be ashamed upon something. R/r 911

Yeah, its old news. Nothing is being done except internal investigation. I do doubt that abandonment will ever be brought up as it is ludicorous to even imply that being within 15 feet of your patient is abandoning them. The door was open and the husband entered the unit while the fiasco occurred. I do know that the DA of Okfuskee Co. described he is reviewing the dash cam as the reports from the trooper(s) described. He is as well emphasized that this case has no urgency over any other case. The Paramedic does have an attorney, and I believe one will see a civil law suit and OHP is probably preparing to see how much it will costs. This is not the first incidence between the OHP and the EMS. Hopefully, new troopers and new resolution will occur. R/r 911

I have employees that work at that EMS and know the Paramedic. I am sure I will hear more as it occurs and it is a neighboring EMS. I have several friends that are "brown shirt" but this was crossing the line. I too may not have completely pulled over as well. The road is narrow and truthfully, I know the speed of most OHP when they are responding to "assist another officer". Enough troubled that they actually turned around and pursued the EMS unit to stop it to give a citation. Amazing, no question to either of the EMS personnel about the patients condition or interest to the patients welfare was made from OHP. I have heard more rumors that I will not nor can discuss. There is NO reason to restrain or "choke hold" the medic. They know he was unarmed and what threat? They knew exactly where they were going and transporting as it is the ONLY hospital (which one of my EMS is stationed). So, yes they should had handle it there. Unfortunately, they did as they continued to discuss it again (I'll use that term loosely) at the hospital. Yes, we did not see the occurrence but if the officer entered the patient area as described, he was out of line and had no business doing so. The Paramedic should not had resisted arrest but allowed it to occur and delt with it legally. Call for another EMS unit and allow the system to determine if interference and delay of care could be charged to OHP. Some EMS have recently had "attitude" problems with OHP. Even myself, in which I always maintained a great working relationship and friends with many but have seen recent problems at scenes. Not all are bad, as many are great in assisting and performing their job. I believe this will not be dropped as many think. OHP is now investigating the trooper that did the choke hold & all are still working without changes. The paramedics are as well. The tribe is also investigating. In other words, they potentially opened a can of worms. Hmm... Native Indian EMS, black medic and patient, family .. white troopers. Unfortunately, this may be attempted to be resolved and swept away but I do hope some positive changes will occur. Also, a new career for a trooper or at least placed in the panhandle and suffer penitence. I will probably hear more tomorrow as some will be working there, and the news media is keeping people abreast. It will be interesting to see what the D.A. will do. R/r 911
