  1. Thanks for the straight answers guys. Sorry for taking so long to post back in here--college has been kicking my butt. I appreciate the support! Thanks for the straight answers guys. (Haha, see what I did there?) As a side note, sorry it took me so long to get back to you, College is kicking my butt. Thanks for the support! Very much appreciate it.
  2. I am a member of the LGBT (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender) community. Two questions: 1) How are LGBT people received/treated in EMS (in EMT or medic positions or in management positions) 2) How are LGBT people received/treated in the fire service (in any position you can speak to)? Thanks for the time. Cad, out.
  3. Bro, thanks for the advice, but I'm almost seventeen, I am in college, and I've been through a hell of a lot more stress than most kids my age. I appreciate the advice, but i am going to go with two things on deciding on doing a ride along 1) the advice that people I KNOW have years of experience and 2) if I personally feel ready for it. And I do. After more than a year since posting this thread. And it doesn't matter since I have to be 18 anyway.
  4. I wear leather gloves when I play with my cats anymore. My hands and wrists used to be so scratched up my mom actually told me I looked self-destructive.
  5. You can always check Ebay, as well.
  6. There is this article online having to do with hypoxic drive and COPD pts. http://paramedicblog.wordpress.com/2009/11/19/hypoxic-drive-theory-myth-the-why-and-how/
  7. Welcome to the city! It's a great place to learn a lot.
  8. I bet he uses it to MELT the snow in parking lots (with all those lights).
  9. Go ahead, 51!
  10. Yes as I was researching this myself I heard that the reason a lot of Emergency med physicians don't work on ambulances more often is because their malpractice insurance doesn't cover prehospital care.
  11. The city I listen too is pretty small so I'm not too surprised that the broadcast isn't further delayed.
  12. Actually I was listening this morning as the FD responded to a car wreck. Later today I heard the news that two people had been killed, and the media gave a time pretty close to when I was listening, so it seems legit.
  13. This probably won't be as cool to the people actually in EMS right now, but is was definitely cool to me to listen to the medic's and fire guys talk back and forth and with dispatch. You can search for you county or state and choose services from there. http://www.broadcastify.com/ They also do police, air craft, and rail radio scans!
  14. Welcome to the City!
  15. Good to see a lot of answers for me here, but I'm a little down in the mouth that most of them are negative. Not down on you guys at all, I need to hear it like it is. Thanks for taking the time to hash this out with me. What does it mean when you said, 'sign off on their protocols'? Not follow them, and work within an MD's scope of practice? Triemal makes a good point with the cost to the dept. to equip an ambulance with all the equipment a physician would need/use. I considered the salary issues a department might have but not that. Thanks for pointing that out. The whole 'medical director' thing sounds cool, but if I can't work directly (ha) in EMS then I'd rather not do it. ParamedicMike also made some good points that I appreciate; I guess what I was specifically looking for was whether I could work within the scope of practice of a physician on an ambulance, and even though I didn't really state that in a way I feel was clear enough you've all given me solid answers.
  16. I did a google search on it, and I realize that it's not a position fire depts. offer (at least not that I could find). But is it even slightly possible that I could send in an application saying, "I'm a doctor and I want to do this." And they would let me? As a career?
  17. Recently after talking to my parents I got the idea of becoming a physician. But I don't want to work in a hospital. I still want to be a firefighter and a paramedic, but what if I could work as a doctor on an ambulance? Would fire deptartments hire an emergency medicine physician who was also a firefighter, and had experience as a paramedic? I want to work in EMS, preferably with some sort of ground ambulance service or FD, but I started thinking about this and wanted to know if it was a possibility.
  18. Why do we watch TV?
  19. I did look back! And you were right. I've learned a lot since I've gotten on the City, but I think the thing that's really stuck with me is being aware that I don't know everything.
  20. Which would be how? I'm not trying to sound like an ass here, but I honestly want to know. I don't remember my reception and I don't usually greet newcomers. (Maybe that's the problem...)
  21. I'm here. Wheee.
  22. Honestly I don't know what's up with some of the shows on these days. It's like half the channels running low-budget shows are filler-material between the other channels running low-budget shows. We have more money to buy food.
  23. We only have Netflix....
  24. Srothig...please don't call me sir. I'm not asking because I'm a girl (I actually don't mind being called 'son' every now and then) but because I should probably be calling YOU sir. I'm a high school student. I'm the last person you should show respect to on here. (Just so you know, I was laughing while I wrote this entire reply). And then there's you, ERDoc. Maybe it's one of those shows that people in the profession just flock to to get mad about and make fun of it? Because I hadn't heard of it or watched it until it popped up here. Crap. We're actually giving them more publicity?
  25. Why don't we call out the inaccuracies of these shows on the actual sites hosting the online videos?
