Typical hose monkey mentality. If I am standing on the front lawn my family is going to be with me since I mad sure they were out before you jumped into your Galls outfitted POV and drove to the fire. But please feel free to try and save my porn stash for me. Peace, Marty

Woman dies in ER lobby as 911 refuses to help
Scaramedic replied to Lone Star's topic in General EMS Discussion
Ummm, how about going back to Mexico? That's probably where 175 of those 200 cases a day came from. Paz, Mario Edit: I can't spell for crap today!! -
Any one an ER Tech? EMT-P as RN Nurses?
Scaramedic replied to speedygodzilla's topic in General EMS Discussion
Let's cut the the "how do medics work in the er" or "who makes a better caregiver" and "who's education is better" debates. What it comes down to is money. Locally a Medic in the ER starts at $19, an RN starts at $30. Career advancement for a Medic in a hospital is nill yet career advancement for an RN is limitless, especially BSN's. If you want to play Nurse in the ER, get the degree and make them pay you what you deserve. Medics in the ER are seen by management as a cheap replacement for RN's plain and simple. This is the reason many Nursing unions had tantrums when Medics were introduced into the ER. The Oregon Nurses Association actually went to the state Attorney General to try and block Medics working in the ER. He shot them down and since the RN shortage is at uber levels they have not re-introduced it, yet. If you want to work in the ER as a side job thats different but if you plan on making it a career go to Nursing school, like I am. Peace, Marty -
What Path Did You Take to Become a Paramedic?
Scaramedic replied to UMSTUDENT's topic in General EMS Discussion
I was on a three day bender and I woke up in an alley with a tattoo and Paramedic license. I took a cheese grater to the tattoo which was a lot less painful than being a Paramedic! Peace, Marty -
Oh come on Dust I think of a use for this. It's a great way for Fire chiefs to blow some of that hard earned tax payers money in their over inflated budgets, you know the money that should be spent on Police or potholes. Peace, Marty

A&E Intervention: Medics can accept refusal from a drunk
Scaramedic replied to BEorP's topic in General EMS Discussion
Since I was the one who used the word Podunk I shall respond. You made my point with the sentence in red, county is not town honey. Also if that is the way your system practices medicine then I hate to tell you this but, your podunk. Waiting for ANY patient to go unresponsive who has verbalized suicidal ideation and then followed it up with popping a bottle of Trazadone is ludicrous. Every minute treatment is withheld a few million more brain cells die, five days in the hospital says enough to me. If she was promptly treated she might not have spent five days in ICU. Before you defend your system and their actions I suggest you study the physiology of an overdose. While your buddies with the county VFD stood around with their proverbial thumbs up their asses she absorbed more and more of the toxin (Trazadone). In other words she became sicker and sicker until her body failed enough that she lost consciousness. Think about it this way, if she was standing there with a .38 jammed under her chin would the FF's or LEO's wait until she pulled the trigger to try and help her. She is conscious and alert, she's just refusing treatment right? She has the right to refuse doesn't she? Obviously the answer is no, she loses her rights when she expresses or attempts to harm herself. The law is written that when someone is not mentally capable of protecting themselves then law enforcement and EMS must step in and help them. The departments in question failed to do this and deserve more than just a rip on a EMS forum. I would not be surprised to see a lawsuit coming out this, I can just see some ambulance chaser drooling while watching this play out on TV. I'm sure your system is great, but every system in open to criticism and in this case probably deserves it. Sorry if you don't want to hear it, but in my opinion someone dropped the ball on this one. No big deal, it happens all the time except this time it was on TV and it gave us something to bitch about. If your system is as good as you say then they will do something about this. If they don't, well in the words of Dust: they suck! Finally if your read my post you will see I complimented the crew that responded, my problem was with the VFD and PD. Unfortunately your system includes them also. Peace, Marty -
A&E Intervention: Medics can accept refusal from a drunk
Scaramedic replied to BEorP's topic in General EMS Discussion
Ok my wife TIVO'd this and I re-watched it and I caught a couple of things... #1. This is podunk Kansas as far as I can tell. The crew that was refusing treatment was the first responders, they had the really cool "Fire-Rescue" jackets from Galls. The transport crew showed up from AMR and were the ones that actually packaged and transported the patient. So here is my guess, what the producers of the show called "Paramedics" were volunteer Firefighters from the local VFD. They were obviously unsure how to proceed since she is telling them to leave her alone, compound the stress with TV cameras and they vapor-locked. #2. Lets be honest most LEO's look to us to decide whether or not a patient is medically unable to make their own decisions. So when the Mooseknuckle, Kansas PD shows up with TV cameras rolling and indecisive volunteers on scene they are going to assume the same "thumb in ass" posture the FD did. #3. If you notice once AMR shows up the patient is packaged and treated, yet she is still conscious. I think the whole "unconscious" symptom was added for drama and to make up for the dumbass FD & PD initial statements. Peace, Marty P.S. Am I the only one who found the subject of this intervention a spoiled brat? I have watched this show before and actually hoped the people would do well and get their lifes back. Not this one, I found myself not giving a damn about this women. I just love the fact that her family and her kept talking about how rich she was yet at the end of the show it said she is running out of money. Whats wrong princess $10,000 limo rides draining your divorce settlement? -
...from the fire, though there were many injuries prior to the fire including lacerations, candle burns and chaffed nipples. Of course it was controlled quickly, half of the FD was already on scene when the fire started. Peace, Marty

Congrats to all! :wav: Welcome to life at the poverty line! #-o Peace, Marty

Ummm being a Paramedic is working the trucks, thats what the job is. It's like asking the question what jobs are there for an electrician if he doesn't want to work with electricity anymore? Sure you can do other jobs but they are not "Paramedic" jobs. Hospital based Paramedic = Nurses bitch. Tactical Paramedic = Cops bitch. Cruise ship Paramedic = Gopher or Isaacs bitch. Fire EMS = Hose Monkey with "skills" The autonomy you have as a medic is gone once you leave the streets. Get a real job. Leave EMS entirely. Let the Fire Departments have it, the population is too high anyway. In my case go to Nursing school. Sit through a CNA course (its required for the program) with kids who weren't even born when I started in EMS. God it makes me feel old sometimes. Oh and a mental image for Dust over in Iraq. College girls are hot, I mean smoking hot. Its been warm here to, so lots of shorts and tight t-shirts. Peace, Marty

I think it was a little of both and the fact they wanted more tax money and were going to charge more for transports. I always felt it was a back door way to get more money. You know the city needs another "high angle underwater confined space hazmat infared equipped search and rescue team." You never know when a trident sub might go down in the Willamette. Peace, Marty

Oh Rid you don't know the half of it. I lost respect for the Portland Fire Bureau when Bush 1 was in office. Keep in mind this is the FD that decided on their own to take over the 911 ambulance service without a public vote. When a public outcry led to a vote they lost to AMR. They had gone as far as to buy ambulances and hire paramedics, when they lost the vote they cut the medics pay and made them firefighters. Real fair. Both the Portland Police and Fire Bureaus get away with murder (literally) all the time. Portland politics are as dirty as anything that ever came out of Tammany Hall, maybe worse. Peace, Marty

Its nice to see that AK has his own website. Peace, Marty

Any call that dispatch says "details via pager." Two calls come to mind that were dispatched liked that. #1. NH patient who won't stop masturbating, who is now bleeding from "abrasive" injury. #2. A crew coming out of hospital with a non-emergency transport reported a man standing on the corner playing with his little friend. :jerk: Two minutes later we were dispatched to that one because PD didn't want to deal with it. Peace, Marty

What country would this really hot 10 yr old be in?? I don't want to think about what they cut off in Iraq for that. Peace, Marty

"And yes, EMS is dispatched for car fires, woods fires, Activated Fire Alarms, smell of smoke, CO Alarms, etc." OK, thank you for pointing out just how poorly run your system is. Peace, Marty

Which is why I have a problem with dual service. Either your a Medic or a firefighter, too many dual roles I know want to be FF's not Medics. You know these idiots, the ones that wear their turnouts when they respond to a CP. Peace, Marty

The local press has printed what he said on MySpace and no he did not name the victim. I am not going to be food for some bottom feeding ambulance chasing piece of crap so I am not going to repost what he said. Trust me when I say it was very generic as far as has been reported. The whole "led reporters to her door" is BS since every police, fire, and ambulance call is monitored by the media. The media knew about this call way before the posting. What the suit is saying is the media took publicly available information and tied it to the post. The local media even uses the freedom of information act to get MDT transcripts from AMR. I am personally disgusted by this, the internet is the new tobacco industry for lawyers. Lawsuits are flying everywhere around the country over internet postings. As far as AMR let's be honest they are just protecting their ass. I am sure they will file to separate themselves from this suit and that is why they fired him. You are looking at the beginning of a new censorship movement for the internet. Maybe I am wrong but it seems to me the 1st amendment does not say anything about health information from private individuals. Also the fourth amendment is about goverment invading personal information, not individuals. This is just another way our individual freedoms are being destroyed. Be careful what you say, post, or even think the lawyers and facists are waiting to take you down. If the press is so worried about private healthcare information then why did they report on such things as Britneys rehab? The gory details of Anna Nicoles death were all over the news, yet a Medic mentions the neighborhood a rape happened and he is fired and sued. Sorry for the rant but this crap is getting old to someone who believes in the freedom of speech. Hence my new avatar, we are living in dark days when one can be sued for your public thoughts. Peace, Marty

The earlier post on this subject has turned out to be prophetic... MySpace posting ends in lawsuit. AMR has already fired him and he is facing a multi-million dollar suit. All I know is that the posting said "(No F'ing way I am posting what the Medic said on MySpace)" even though it has been released by the local media. NO specific details were given though as far as I have heard so far. More details will probably come out in time. Definitely a warning for everyone who posts. Peace, Anonymous EMT City poster who is in no way connected to nor carries any liability for the poster formerly known as Marty, et al.

My experience in scene safety is as follows. The scenes where you actually worry about scene safety, i.e shootings, assaults, are usually the safest scenes you go on. The scenes that you think are safe, i.e chest pains, minor MVA's, sicks, are the scenes that can turn gnarly the fastest. Self defense training is great but do not get in the mindset that only the "cool" calls can be dangerous. CP's can be psychos, MVA's can end in gunfire and sick calls can be OD's in a drug house. Also the best defense in EMS is sometimes retreating and letting the boys with guns and tasers take over. Peace, Marty P.S. Hai Karate, do you still wear polyester disco shirts also? Geezers.
