  1. Especially if we arrive on scene without backup on a mentally disturbed patient and especially if we chase that person again without backup or protection. Here is the longer thread... http://www.emtcity.com/index.php/topic/17853-lodd-in-suburban-philly/page__pid__237503__st__0&#entry237503
  2. Dude...check the dates on postings...this one is over 2 years old...you saved one over 3 years earlier!
  3. I seriously think this is the oldest thread revival to date!!! Over 3 years....
  4. I have a thread on this from a couple years ago. We had a lady we went on several times for this disease. I truly thought she was BSing when she was telling me she could not move after we gained access to her house. I was thinking psych more than anything but she was prepared. Then when she told us she needed valium, I was like uh huh really you do. I called the doc and he asked how much valium we had. He said to start giving it as it usually took this lady 20-40mg injected before she started to get relief. It was weird watching her respond to the valium, how body parts slowly started coming "back to life". I will try to find the thread. Can't find it yet...but the proper name of disease is Moersch-Woltmann Syndrome
  5. Clearly, as this is the bane of man's existence...to this day we still subscribe to various mythologies simply because someone's unchallenged opinions became "fact". While you have no obligation to provide fact to support your opinions, you do have a responsibility to explain in a logical fashion why you feel the way you do. This responsibility became yours when you chose to respond to a thread and communicated. If you want credibility, if you want to be heard (which clearly you do), then you must provide fact to stand out from all the others who will chime in with unvalidated opinion as well, which in the grand scheme of the "debate" is worthless. We are entitled to our opinions, you are correct in that but no where does it say we are entitled to voice them without reprisal. Acts of reprisal (retaliatory acts) are sometimes needed to sort out random BS, to remove outdated modes of thinking, to shake the reader or poster into common sense. I am not saying I agree with all acts of reprisal, but I am saying they are needed at times and well justified...and state again, NO RULE says you will be free from "attack" or being called out simply because you preface a statement with the words "it is my opinion".
  6. Seriously?? Lone are you trying to use this as evidence for your viewpoint?? I am following this thread closely guys and both sides are expressing themselves well, but I can not believe you threw this gem in the ring. I am no animal trainer nor do I have years of experience in this realm of psychology, but you can not try to defend your position with this line of fecal matter. Do you know how orca's routinely eat? This I have had the pleasure of watching in person during my Alaska stint and I can say without a doubt, their preferred method of hunting when in "their environment" is to ride onto the beach and grab their food. Think sea lions basking in sun one minute, then orca food the next. Now I am not saying he grabbed her for dinner, but the way he grabbed her was certainly very instinctual and well within his typical environment...and since they have done such a great job of recreating his environment, then I have to ask this, does he know he is out of it? To him, it's just another spot to be in therefore there will be times when he does what he does and nothing will ever control that. We have no way to know if these animals despite all their intelligence have the ability to "think ahead". To the best of our knowledge, they simply react to the here and now. If this is the case, then his little anger outburst could have been triggered by anything in that moment and his reaction was a display of anger, but he does not know how to limit that anger when dealing with a human. We can not place anthropomorphic traits on these creatures and assume they are using rational thought with well planned actions. He is the alpha male and probably out of all those in his pod, most likely viewed the trainer as the weakest link...she is after all the slowest and worst swimmer. Anyways, you simply can not use that environment remark as proof, especially when it is already CAPTIVE in our environment, the one we created for it. As for the section I underlined, I think you have twisted words. Since I live here in Orlando, we get story after story with lots of little updates via radio, TV, newspaper, etc. Long after the national story is gone we will still hear and read about it and most updates will never see the likes of CBS or the AP. However, it is said half the trainers COULD NOT work with this whale and that was due to experience. Nothing was said about their willingness or "will not" work with it as you have implied which completely twists the original story but adds credence to your side falsely. Here is the exact quote to which you improperly referenced: "Because of his size and the previous deaths, trainers were not supposed to get into the water with Tilikum, and only about a dozen of the park's 29 trainers worked with him. Brancheau had more experience with the 30-year-old whale than most. She was one of the park's most experienced trainers overall." I love a great debate, so keep it clean and no more twisting words to fit "facts" and please use logic as there are many intelligent readers here.
  7. Yes you did and what a great job you did! Look at how well I type now too!Glad you enjoyed the visit and the fact you think I am awesome.
  8. Wow!! That is pure comedy gold... No report or conversation would EVER occur like that...on either end! It just would not happen, and with a 5 min response time to ER, at the end of the 3 minutes you would think you would have heard something. Anyways, for those of you familiar with this FD, do they actually call it an ambulance?? I have worked with many, many FFs over the years and I never hear them say ambulance, especially when it is a FD "ambulance". What terminology do the FFs use there? Fav quotes: We have done everything we can in the ambulance... Hopefully when we get there, the docs can umm, hopefully, its not looking good. (Yeh we pass our hopes on via radio all the time, especially when we know the outcome of most arrests. The hospital: We will have ALL docs available... (for what? A code??) And then to close out this 3 min radio report he feels the need to inform the hospital this is an "emergency situation"...LOL!!!!! NO SHIT SHERLOCK! The man is not breathing and has no pulse or in your fire speak he is in a "deep sleep, errr, coma" Classic!
  9. College level AnP I and II for starters....all the other stuff you mentioned is easy cheesy once you have laid the foundation which starts with those courses and some others.
  10. Some older member may remember my past stories...I have been through 2 county mergers (fire taking over EMS). The most recent one was a true gem...fire and ems were separate county agencies, but shared facilities. Both sides were represented by the IAFF in regards to bargaining with the county. Fire decided they wanted EMS which was an all ALS very progressive service for over 20+ years. Paramedics were united and fought, showed up at every meeting and shut down the votes. Fire called a meeting last minute and voted to throw Medics out of IAFF. Vote was successful, Medics no longer had representation. Several years battle ensued as medics became another union group and now county was bargaining with two diff unions which was headache. Medics were winning, they were holding their own as IAFF never thought medics would be successful with the other union. Fire then went another route since merger kept getting denied. Three seats on county commission were up for re election. IAFF did heavy support for 3 special candidates, one who was a family member to a firefighter. All 3 candidates were successfully elected despite not having ever done politics before. FIRST county commission meeting with new elects, guess what came up for discussion. Yep! Fire Merger... Motion was voted on and passed. IAFF wins again!! After mission accomplished, one county commissioner resigned as his job was done. Several years later, almost all career medics have been forced out due to not being able to cross train. The ones who remain are harassed. The service is now no longer all ALS...the service now has constant turnover, as fire medics are in high demand and they now use said service as a stepping stone until the "real fire jobs" come along. The collective knowledge and talent pool is extremely diminished...the place is no longer a nationally recognized leader as they once were before. Yeh, the IAFF always has everyone's best interests in mind....NOT!
  11. I personally like the staging of the photo... Gloves on to check his equipment inside his station The partially deployed LSB The jacket casually hanging with his name showing The suspenders... Propaganda at it's finest
  12. Richard...show yourself man....
  13. No it is not an issue to have licenses in multiple states. This isn't like a driver's license where you have to turn one in to get another.
  14. It has been done a couple times actually. The issue was people holding it longer than they should and the bear got lost a few times and had to be replaced as well. I know Teri had a lot of issues with the project...
  15. I am confused??? Are you thinking of this place in IRAQ??? Abu Ghraib http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Abu_Ghraib_torture_and_prisoner_abuse
  16. Your information is applicable to countries such as Saudi...it has no relevance to Dubai or Abu Dhabi and is full of misconceptions, those of one who has spent very little, if any time there and is instead grouping it with other Muslim countries and their rules/habits. As I posted, there are tons of family's there from all countries wearing normal clothes and receiving normal respect. Women drive everywhere, they are not shrouded (unless they choose) and there is no standing out or staring from the people. They do not have walled villas/compounds, they live in houses, hotels, or apartments just like in the states. I am in Dubai constantly, just incorporated a business there and have a lot of expat friends who live and work there as well. Overall good post, but wrong country.
  17. Ruffles, why you opening a year old topic??? It is going on cause you made it...
  18. 7 R's???? I guess now we will say there are 8 R's...that's right 8 rights of medication administration and this one is very important. The RIGHT to REFUSE!
  19. Never. Suppose you did "save" someone with a DNR...do you think they would be grateful or pissed off that you refused to honor their very personal decision all because you what...had hero complex or felt bad? At what point do your emotions weigh in or become more important than their decision which is supported with legal papers? Answer is...it doesn't and shouldn't. Besides, if I had a DNR and you intentionally disregarded it and resuscitated me, I would sue your ass off along with your employer...would be my one final gift to my surviving family members.
  20. What was your first half-arrest?
  21. People are on a roll... Another 2 year old thread revived....
  22. Ruffles, I have spent a LOT of time in Dubai/Abu Dubai simply because they are both connected and I often do not know which one I am in when I get out of the taxi. I am getting ready to spend 7 days in Dubai again very soon for some other business development. I say this....If you have the chance, jump on it! You will not be unhappy or disappointed and it will be a great experience. I know you home school or used to but I certianly encourage you to check out the local private schools because that would be a heck of an experience for any child and it is a fair mix of expats. The emirates(Dubai and Abu) you are looking at are very progressive and quite liberal. From here on out I will say Dubai because both are similar. Keep in mind, the ratio of foreigners to people from Dubai is 6:1. There are tons of expats, expats are what make Dubai succeed. People from all over the world are present in Dubai and it is basically a cultural extravaganza. Answers 1: How are Christians treated? Unless you are running around with Jesus Saves on your car, tshirts referencing such or jewelry...no one will know or really care. Yes, you are proud of your faith, but there is no need to advertise it or talk about it while there. I am pretty sure you can keep the faith within your family at home where it belongs. As a business man, get used to hearing enshallah or "as god/Allah wills". Do not take offense because this is their country and their beliefs. DO not try to convert, you will get in trouble. Also you will hear Salam or sala a lakim (sp?) and the usual reply is A Lakim a salam. Here is the funny thing, unlike Christianity, most people will never ask you about religion. AT most, someone will ask you if you are Muslim. All you have to do is say "No I am not". Guess what? That will be the end of the conversation and they will move on to next topic with no offense taken or given. Do NOT expand on this topic, do not push this topic. Be prepared once you a close Muslim friend for them to ask you why you are not Muslim since the gods are one in the same, Jesus is one of the dividing factors...this is the time you simply say I believe what I believe and respect your beliefs as well and I really enjoy our friendship. Again this is not the time regardless of your feelings about the friendship to say anything that suggests they are wrong or to convert. As for churches, I never looked for one and I have NEVER seen one. If they exist, they are discreet and you will find out about them by networking with other expats. You will not see a cathedral or church proclaiming Jesus is savior or crosses in the air.... In short, people treat people like humans. They asses you for who you are not what your beliefs are. 2. Your women and children are safe to venture out, they do not need escorts this is not Saudi Arabia. When you go to the mall, you will see women in head to toe burqas, you will see women with only head coverings, you will see women in shorts, skirts, and very short skirts. It truly is the culture mix there. Your best bet is to use common sense anda hint of modesty. The kids are free to run around in whatever, shorts, tanks, they get a free pass until they reach older ages. The majority of my time is spent in shorts and sandals in Dubai. Do not wear slogan tshirts, do not wear American proud shirts, clothing items, it is simply best to avoid these things. You will not see people wearing hats so leave those at home as well. 3. There are TONS of fast food restraunts...McDs, Baskin Robins, KFC, Burger King, you name it, it is here. There are also plenty of other rests as well from many different countries. Lebanese, Persian,Russian, Japanese, Italian, Indian...very very good food. You can buy pork at grocery stores and some restraunts serve it as well. Just do not expect to see it in most places you go or they will serve a beef bacon in its place. You are going to be introduced to many new fruits and veggies...I like this. 4. As for driving, you can drive there but man it is insane!!! The cabbies rule the road and they drive very fast and very crazy. I would look at hiring a FT driver or taking a taxi. Taxis are very cheap in Dubai and very reliable. Anything else, just ask and I will find an answer for you. A very close friend of mine, former flight medic coworker lives and works in Dubai for a hospital as a medical case manager.
  23. I never wore a patch until I was employed and then I followed my employer's guidelines. Go to Wal Mart, buy a nice frame holder for your certificate and insert the patch in there. Congrats on passing!
  24. It calls for SOF Medics but if you have prior military and/or weapons/security experience you will be considered. ADS Medical Support Team International is looking for additional SOF medics to provide both med/security for transportation and also for clinical/hospital work. Possible 10 days on 10 off type scenarios. Any interested personnel please send resumes and certifications to Chris "The Brit" Whittall; adsmedicalsupport.com
