  1. The better solution with more favorable outcome for all is this...are you ready? Here goes: E D U C A T I O N Yes it is the slow and steady battle, but it is the one that will win. The OP's solution is for a quick fix which is no fix indeed. It will only create resentment and continues to allow for mediocrity within our profession. We must become better educated, become our own distinct profession, and then we can demand the higher wages. I am not sure, but I think this has been mentioned once before on this site.
  2. Interesting concept but as has been previously discussed, "Most" Americans are but 1-2 paychecks away from disaster. Yes, this is mostly for how they choose to live, I do not even want to get on that tangent at the moment; however, what would the ramifications be if they did indeed not work part time during July. How many families would suffer, homes lost or bills pile up as most people work a part time job because they need a part time job? How long would it take to recover those lost wages? Would they ever be recovered in the long run? What would the effect be on these businesses, cities, towns, etc if they suddenly had to increase everyone's wages? Would they survive? Would we have a job to return to part time after that occurred?
  3. How does one become "more dead"? I would love to be the one on trial for a case where CPR was performed and opposing council states the CPR caused it.
  4. If you were drunk at a party, say on outskirts of town, and one of your party goers fell over in cardiac arrest, and YOU were the only medically trained person there, would you withhold CPR? Is something better than nothing? I can answer my own question honestly. I have done CPR drunk. Was this wrong? If your answer to this is yes, do you wish to ask the guy who survived after the medics arrived and converted him to a perfusing rhythm with one shock? Damned if you do, damned if you don't. Too many variables to say it is black or white.

I can not believe they do not issue helmets to spectators or move them farther up in the stands. How may people must die before we take action?? How many!!?? Fire Department spokeswoman Jolene Davis told The News Tribune of Tacoma she had no details on the nature of the accident or the injuries to the boy and man. The Pierce County medical examiner's office identified the boy killed as Sabastian Hizey of Puyallup. Some spectators told the TV station they had to throw cups off the stands to get the attention of medics.   7. Absolutely one could. However, why take on new fresh problems when you may already be dealing with your own internal ones and know first hand how difficult it is? Een more reason to use the pre screen reports. Some shred it, some put it in your employment file. Despite what you think, anyone can use the net and have all your information in a matter of minutes, if not seconds. The majority of employees are honest, moral people who are not looking for your information. On the off chance that a janitor who has been scrupulous up until the second he saw your report as he was pilfering employment files, well that may happen. Hopefully there are safeguards in place and you have every right to ask what they are before submitting your information. You also have the right as you have stated and most likely done based on your comments of keep on moving and look for employment elsewhere.

  9. Interesting statement, because where I come from, you would NOT work unless you provided those things. Every government agency I have every known has always requested this. Even several private companies I have worked for have asked this. Why do you ask? It has nothing to do with their concern if you will pay bills, it is their concern that you have NOT paid bills. WHy is this an issue you ask? As much as I do not agree with the concept, as it never applied to me when I was in this situation, but applicants with poor credit scores are likely to be late or no shows for work more often. They are also more likely to be short time employees. Credit reports also reveal bankruptcies and leans or collections. The employer has a right not to saddle himself or his business with repeated visits or calls coming from collectors. A lot of jobs which involve higher security will not hire you if you have any of those issues. It indicates a lack of responsibility and possibility of you taking an alternative method down the road of paying off or removing those debts (meaning stealing from the company). As an employer, do you think it is wrong for them to use every tool available, to include probability and statistics, when selecting the proper candidate before spending precious dollars on their hiring and orientation period? As for a candidate's medical history, that is entirely relevant as well. A brick layer has two equally qualified people for a job. Both have passed his physical agility test. There is absolutely no difference between the two except medical history. Apparently one of the candidates has had numerous back surgeries. He appears fine now, passed the test, but history is there. Which one would you choose? Again, do they have the right to use tools available to assist with screening in order to choose the best candidate for the job? Even in the above situation, they may opt to go with a lesser candidate in order to avoid potential issues. Say they hire back history man and then on Day 2 he re aggravates or creates a new injury. Now the company is saddled with replacing him and still paying him while he heals if at all. Yes, it could just have easily happened to the one with no history, but statistically speaking, the odds were already against one which could have avoided many issues for all had they not chosen him.
  10. I am the employer, not the employee. Do you ask potential employers if you may run their credit when submitting your own for the hiring process?
  11. Cause this is how it all starts. Precedent is set, other states take notice, try it out as well...next thing ya know, everyone is doing it, which is exactly what we want to prevent. I am rallying for your state, your cause, cause I do not want it in mine...ever.
  12. As I said before, statistically speaking ( and I am trying to find the studies), most abuse cases (mental, sexual, physical) occur from family members or friends of the family. Want to talk about hiding it well, imagine the shock on all these people's faces over the years when they discover what their family member has been up to and they never had a clue. A criminal element would most likely avoid a service that does background checks. They would go for the ones that don't. Also, doing credit checks are not out of line either...you can learn a lot about aperson by running their credit. As others and I have said, it is an interview process. By no means would I let the 3 minutes be the only meeting before entrusting my children to them. Think of all the other important decisions you have made in your life in under 3 minutes...or impressions rather.
  13. Mate, the question was not more of questioning your intent, it was more along the lines of... If I had this information and posted it on a public forum for all to see....who is part of "the all to see". Bad guys use the internet ya know..
  14. First, your debate tactics of comparing apples to oranges is old and ineffective. By the things you keep arguing which are "similar" in your opinion are truly not. None of those situations involve you being called out to a Non-patient to do a procedure which is unwarranted. None of them. The crux of the issue is, should we be called out repeatedly to do a blood draw when there is no medical justification for our response or treatment/procedure rendered? Many of them do not already. We know this is an issue. Child abusers do not seek help unless they have some incredible story to accompany the injuries or the child quits breathing. Many abuse cases are discovered/reported via astute school employees or confidants within the child's social circle. However, having been on a number of scenes where abuse is suspected, the parents are NEVER given an indication of my thoughts. I get the child transported and then make them known to the physician. As far as the parents know, I was oblivious and the doctor noticed it. Therefore, on the surface, I have not appeared to violate the appearance of trust. If they have been caught, why do they need more evidence? It is the officer's job to obtain what he needs and that does not involve calling me out for non patients. We can take this a step further, which no one has done yet and really weave a sticky web for ourselves. If we respond, are we now obligated to MAKE this a patient? Are vitals necessary? What type of report do we have to do? That PCR will now be called into court as well, plus we may be subpoenaed to further corroborate the officer's story. Now we have just involved ourselves into a whole different realm all because we were called out for a non patient, when the PD should already have a system in palce where they do not tax other emergency response systems. They should have 1-2 officers or more trained on each shift capable of collecting the evidence and leaving EMS out of it entirely. If I ever pick up the aforementioned patients and the cops are not already on scene, why would I stay on scene waiting for them. If they need me in an EMS capacity, and they need to go to the ER, I am not sitting on scene waiting for a cop so I can rat them out. Now you have taken it to a personal argument instead of a legal one. We have no right to disclose to the parents what the child may tell us in confidence, excluding abuse cases and even then I would pass it on to the receiving physician and let him do what he is supposed to. Please give an example of this scenario. I have several in mind but none of them would I ever disclose. I want to know what your line of reasoning is here.
  15. Most mental, sexual and physical abuses are by immediate family, "close family" and long trusted friends of the family. They already know the victim, have their trust and are able to be around often enough to continue the abuse and intimidation into silence.
  16. Fiznat...glad to see you stepping up mate. As for me, I must apologize to everyone and remove myself from the planning and the trip all together. My sister called me yesterday, informed me she is getting married on March 21st and she has asked me to "give her away". I am honored to do so for her and therefore, it seems I will be heading to Alabama instead of Baltimore. Good luck with the meet up and enjoy the conference!!!

  19. Do not know what you are referring to Timmy but it is inaccurate. ALL paramedics have guidelines/protocols, it is the law. Nurses can and do initiate treatments and medications.
  20. There are other threads in regards to that and the #1 answer seems to be more education. Feel free to use the Search feature for further. If you are transporting them, someone on either the sending or receiving end deemed it necessary, the onus is on them not you, so thus be it.
  21. No different than most paramedic guidelines or protocols. By prewritten, I was implying that for certain conditions, the nurse may be authorized to request various medications/procedures up to a certain level in the algorithm. At a certain point in her autonomous decisions, she must then consult with a physician. However, allowing that much time to elapse is highly unlikely anyways as most of the transport times would be near complete in this area.
  22. But wait....if the nurse if fully trained in your service/area protocols and this is how your system operates, then I guess you would have to take orders from the nurse. I am sure the nurse has verbal or prewritten instructions from the med control and has some leeway in asking or ordering further questions or interventions. I mean if this is how they do it there and this is what you signed up for, then I guess you would take orders from a nurse or find another job. Seems to me that ethics would dictate you do the best for your patient and if that order came from a nurse, then I would be inclined to follow it...I certainly would not pick and choose which patients I was going to help because of my feelings for the licensure level of the person on the phone. I mean if they were of lower licensure level, that would be weird and most unlikely to ever occur. But since they are a higher level of care and that is the way the system is set up and you agreed to it by working in that area, then I guess you are stuck.

  24. I wondered when you would run out of steam and resort to name calling or character questioning. Knowing nothing about me and yet calling me lazy or a couch potato and implying I think there are calls beneath me. You definitely should step back, apologize and then reenter the debate. Again you have veered off topic. This has absolutely NOTHING to do with laziness, it is more of an abuse of the medics in the street. This is the first step into a grander level of abuse of our services. You wish to talk about professionalism, well running blood draws for non medical, no evaluation needed patients is not the way to do it. By the way, if you ever wish to chat offline, I would be more than happy to do it. Laziness is not something that exists in my work ethic and if you knew me you would feel ashamed for ever implying such.
  25. I have two friends that are going to be there, they were invited as they were part of the DMAT Team out of Florida. As far as the questions you are asking, I would think most of that is classified or limited in dissemination. I certainly do not think anyone involved would answer any of those questions on a public forum, especially prior to the event.
