EMTs are now authorized to obtain blood samples on DWI stops
akflightmedic replied to akflightmedic's topic in EMS News
You are obviously confusing the issue and insist on drawing irrelevant comparisons that have no bearing on the crux of the issue. The teenager calling thinks there may be a problem, so you have been called to evaluate a possible patient. The PD on a DUI stop are not calling you to evaluate in a medical capacity, they are calling for a blood draw. What part of this do you not understand? -
Would you trust a babysitter you met this way?

If you are going to compare it to speed dating, then let us examine it from that approach. First, the 3 minute interview is NOT the only interview the people get. It is a chance for you to sit through several potential candidates and decide which ones you wish to talk to more in depth. It isn't like after 3 minutes, they say ok babysit tonight please. The same holds true for speed dating. You basically know within 3-5 minutes of meeting someone if you are interested, if you wish to sleep with them, or if you wish to do a follow up meeting/date and see if there is more to it. Also, you may feel one way and the other party feels differently. By speed dating, you do not waste an entire night suffering miserable company. It also helps you save face because right then and there they can say no thanks and it frees either side up to continue searching. I held multiple sitter interviews in my house during one day marathon. I guess I did my own speed nanny search. There were some that I was already saying no in my head as they approached the door. I looked at clothes, body language and then finally how they spoke. I then conducted the interview, got a little more in depth to make sure my impression was accurate or inaccurate, then informed them one of 2 things. No thanks or I will call you after I have seen the others. Again, I think you are taking this one way out into left field and being a little too harsh on people who may utilize this type of service. What do you suggest as a alternative? What is your alternative solution to a short interview with a partial background check? Do not just bring the problem to light, tell us how to fix it or suggest an alternative. Tell me the great idea, as I think this one is very effective. As for the inability to care for your kids without interviewing....are you even a parent? Are you suggesting parents do not conduct interviews so they can go out and have a life once in a while? -

DO you not understand that you are not being called to evaluate them? You are being called to do phlebotomy, that is it. No patient, no bogus condition, no real condition, just simple phlebotomy. That my friend is NOT our job. Give an inch and they will take a mile. I am arguing against the principle of the matter, others are arguing against the ethics of it. Either way, there is validity to our sides. -

You are missing the point and dodging the meat of the issue. If those characters listed above are PATIENTS, by all means do what you have to. Same for the DUI that is injured or ill. However, calling me out to collect blood on a NON-PATIENT, is not our job. Do not confuse the two very different scenarios. -
I agree with you bro. It is another pretty asinine statement with no validity to it. While I myself do not suffer from ADD/ADHD, my significant other does. Through medication, I have watched her go from a very scatter brain type person to one being able to sit and focus on tasks and actually complete them. The days she forgets to take her medication I get a reminder of what used to be. My youngest daughter is exhibiting similar traits and we are keeping a watchful eye on her. We are not resorting to medications as her type of ADD is more of the easily distracted type, not acted out in behavior like the males who are afflicted. From my reseach, I am aware that there are 6 disctinct classifications of ADD/ADHD and no it is not a crock. My wife was not diagnosed until her mid-late 20s, she was simply overlooked through her school years. Her case was nothing even close to needing a kick in the ass or whatever spew crotch threw forth. I do believe it is a condition that is overdiagnosed sometimes, but it is not a result of parents not tending to their young with corporal punishment.

I do not see a problem. If you do not have family who can watch your kids, then you have to do everything possible to find an acceptable sitter. Some people can not afford daycares, and even those have had their issues of wrongdoing, not to mention they are day cares not night cares. I have used three different sitters and 2 temporary nannies from a website called babysitters.com. I had to pay to join the site, the sitters have background checks, pictures and references that you are allowed to call and check on. After selecting a few sitters, I then chat with them on the phone and meet them in person, as do the kids to make sure it is a fit. From there, I build a roster of 3-5 sitters I trust and can call at different times. I trust the sitter because I trust my kids. They know right from wrong, they know proper behavior and what is expected of themselves and of adults they interact with. I have fired sitters based on feedback from my kids and their comments were harmless in their minds, but I do not pay sitters to lay on my couch for several hours or talk on the phone while the kids play outside. My kids know I am serious with whom I entrust them to and I think they have developed a respect for that and appreciate it on some level. Therefore they are comfortable giving me honest, non malicious feedback. At some point Lone you got to get over the boogeyman fear. Maintaining awareness and respect for the unknown (in this case a babysitter's true personality) is good, but hyper awareness just drags you down. There are good people out there and parents should not be faulted for finding alternative caregivers, especially if they go to the extent of at least trying to obtain a background check. I would suspect that most evil doers would not rgister themselves with a site that is going to do a background check. They tend to pick their victims through alternative methods. It sure beats the heck out of tearing a tab from a flyer on the grocery store bulletein board. -

Sorry I have to break this down for you. "I figure" because when he said "we" he meant we as paramedics, prehospitally should not be doing the blood draws as it was not medically necessary, therefore unethical in his point of view. The fact you do not do any of those procedures in the back of the truck is entirely relevant. We do not do these things, so they do not apply to our "paramedic ethics" code of conduct. No but our ethics may vary when it comes to procedures performed, especially those that are not within our scope and have absolutley no relevance to this topic since they will not be performed in the back of a rig under a paramedic's supervision. The law simply allows for someone of your licensure level to perform the draw, it does not mandate that you MUST; your ethics may allow you to opt out by requesting a different unit, supervisor, whatever. This goes for all those other controversial procedures that some health care providers choose to opt out of all the time. -
Naw, dumb comparison. Inter racial babies are accepted today as opposed to yesterday. I guess if we wait long enough we will all be naming our babies Osama, Saddam, Hitler and many other similar names soon enough. It will be the latest rage.

No, when he said "we", I took it we to mean paramedics in the prehospital setting. Show me otherwise and I will shut up. -
We are also a nation of Big Brother and Government meddling in personal affairs. The government likes to protect children, as they should, as we all should. Do you not view this as a case where a child should be "protected"?
-
Because until the child is OLD enough to realize how his name is harming him, and old enough to petition the court on his own, he will have already suffered through many years of torment. Plus, on every job application, credit check, background check, anything to do with his name and SS# which is a lot.....there is always a section that asks for former names, aliases, etc. He will have to list his former name. Do you think once people see that they will be like "oh he is a reformed racist", or will they form an impression of his character and keep it to themselves...will they discriminate? One thing they may not do is ask him why he had that name, affording him the opportunity to explain that his parents lacked serious good judgment when choosing his name. If the parents want a name such as this, then they should change their OWN names. Unusual names are find, but seriously Katie, a name such as Hitler and Aryan Nation...common sense should prevail.

I do not think any of those procedures are within his scope of practice. It seems to me he is opposed to actually doing the invasive procedure he is trained to do when it goes against his ethics. Huge difference and your examples are not relevant, thus should not be compared. -
Looks Like A Spider Bite To Me.................
akflightmedic replied to crotchitymedic1986's topic in General EMS Discussion
Great thread! What do you think Dwayne? Maybe I had MRSA??? As some of you saw in chat, about 2 months ago I had a nasty "spider bite"...LOL. Actually, we were not sure what it was and the docs over here had all kinds of theories. We were unable to culture it, so we will never know. However I have a nice crater and scar on my face now as a result of it. It presented like a spider bite, swelled up, turned black, looked necrotic and the skin started to slough. It took 14 days of IV antibiotics 2 x a day followed by 10 days of oral antibiotics to resolve it. I have pics of the different stages if anyone is interested. People in chat got to see it live!!! LOL. -
At what point did the children have a say in the their name? Just curious. I think Dwayne raised a good point, yes freedom of speech in regards to naming your child, but at what point do we allow that right to impede the child's pursuit of happiness? You know as well as I do if a new employee showed up for work (provided he even got hired), and introduced himself as Adolf Hitler, you would make preconceived notions about him. He might seem to be a nice genuine guy, but you would think otherwise on a lower level. You would know he had no choice in his naming, but you also would presume to know how he was raised and what his beliefs or the beliefs around him were as he grew up. Same goes for the girl... Their lives became extremely difficult because of a name. I do not see the parents running down to the courthouse and filing a petition to change THEIR name. Why not?

I am still coordinating who is going for sure. The the hotel and symposium discounts come. Then the "Meet up". As previous, there is always talk of organizing one of these things. I pulled one off successfully in 2008 and hope to repeat it again. What better way than to have it at a EMS conference and in a city that is cheap and easy to fly or drive into. Any who, I imagine we will have about 8 members show up after all is said and done.

The more I think about this, the more it angers me. I could seriously branch out on a related tangent but for now will hold to this story. I want to know more about the person who did the scrolling through the phone. Ask them what they were looking for...."well I, um, I was looking for..." for what were you looking???? What gave you the notion, the right to think you could take someone's phone and start scrolling through it? How would you feel if you had dropped your phone and a student found it and they decided to scroll through it before turning it in?? Or if the student did turn it in, but the principal or some other employee decided to scroll through it?? What about that? What if you had one of those cutsie toilet shots that we parents all seem to take of our kids at one point or another? Child porn!!!! Regardless, I think this particular individual dug through the phone and found exactly what they were looking for, perverse judgment indeed. I would be willing to wager this person has some files on their personal computer that they would rather no one ever find. Wave the flag on others and distract them from yourself, typical persecution mentality that goes back 1000's of years.
-
What pisses me off is the fact of how the pictures were found. Take away my phone during school, sure I am ok with that. But what gives you the fucking right as a school employee to start scrolling through my personal effects??!!! What high and mighty road this certain person has taken and for what reason were they looking? Usually those that persecute the hardest are guilty themselves.

If you have taken a full refresher and have a current BLS and ACLS card, your remaining hours can be in/under any of the other groups.
