Nu uh. Statistics and polls say you are wrong Dust. I just know that. Besides, he is Canadian so he can't lay claim to American majority beliefs, even though it is not the majority according to the last poll I read. The minority just happen to be more vocal thereby coveying the image that the majority feel a certain way.

Quote of the day: "Whatever you give a woman, she will make greater. If you give her sperm, she'll give you a baby. If you give her a house, she'll give you a home. If you give her groceries, she'll give you a meal. If you give her a smile, she'll give you her heart. She multiplies and enlarges what is given to her. So, if you give her any crap, be ready to receive a ton of shit. Author Unknown

Any thread over 3 pages typically draws new posters or posters that have not posted in a while out of hiding. It also causes some people to sign up simply so they can respond. More posters means more ad clicks. More ad clicks means EMT City continues to grow and dominate the WWW. It also ensures that EMT City remains free for all to use, including one of the best EMS chat rooms available -

Not if I did not care... Nice try at recovery but all we know is a screen name...yeh I guess that is important to defend the honor of. My example is accurate, it remains unchanged regardless of whatever facts, opinions or statements you present in a logical or illogical fashion. -

Ban Personal Cell Phones From Ambulance
akflightmedic replied to crotchitymedic1986's topic in General EMS Discussion
Nope sorry. Even though I do not own or carry one and I have great disdain for them, they have come in handy on a truck many times. Restricting use yes, ban them outright, no. -
Riddle Me This Batman. A Scheduling Conundrum.
akflightmedic replied to UMSTUDENT's topic in General EMS Discussion
To do it, you need 4 platoons/shifts, whatever you call them. 24 on 72 off but that gives 16 hours of OT every 2 weeks. Other schedule is a 24 and a 16 once a week. Ten years ago, an old county I worked for tried it for about a month or two before realizing it led to more overtime due to call outs, late calls, etc. -
Ban Personal Cell Phones From Ambulance
akflightmedic replied to crotchitymedic1986's topic in General EMS Discussion
If that is geared my way, I may be a weirdo but when I was on shift we had plenty to do in between calls. TV only came on around 8pm or so and that was for a movie everyone could watch. During the day, we read newspapers in the morning, trained, scenarios during the day, played cards, played board games and competed with the daily crossword puzzle. Whoever got the paper in the morning made 5 copies, one for each of us and we did that. We broke up into groups, we had discussions. We worked out for an hour or two every shift. I dunno, but in general, the cell phones are a pain in the ass and are contributory to extremely rude behavior and a decline in social skills and communication. The sad thing is, none of the younger generation realize how pathetic it all is because it is all they have ever known. -
Not to sound rude, but to make tracking easier for me..... Can we save all the excuses? Maybe only post if this is a possibility and do not post if it is already a no? I went thru this last year with the thread and it is a pain to sort through a hundred replies to find the 20 or so that are coming. This thread has been heavily edited to reflect only people which may come to the conference

Ban Personal Cell Phones From Ambulance
akflightmedic replied to crotchitymedic1986's topic in General EMS Discussion
Crochity, this is one area that you and I agree on almost. I do not think they should be banned, meaning not allowed on your person, but its use certainly needs to be curtailed. It should NEVER be ringing while on duty. You should not be chatting on it incessantly or texting non stop. I have not owned a cell phone since 2000 and I only had it for almost 2 years prior to getting rid of it. It is not essential equipment, life does go on without it. People are forgetting how to interface with other humans, how to have a decent conversation with someone next to you. It is much easier to ignore the stranger beside you as you text away than it is to be brave and start an intelligent adult conversation. I like technology, but it needs its limitations. I have more rant, pizza arrived, will write later. -
Save 1-2 million patients in 2009 ??

73% of all made up statistics (historically 65%) have been shown to be accurate after the fact 23% of the time, but this is reported from only a small study that was comprised of .68% of the general population. -
In 2008, we held the First Annual EMT City Meet Up in Orlando, Florida. It was a lot of fun, but I know we can do much better in 2009!! We did the Southeast, now it is time to do the Northeast!! You have plenty of notice to make this happen. The great news is this year's meet up is going to be held at the same time as the EMS Conference in Baltimore, Maryland!! March 24-28 2009 You will be able to network with plenty of other EMS'ers and get all the CME's you need. I will be putting together a special event for EMT City People during this week. Remember, all of this is tax deductible due to it being required education in order to maintain your certs for your job!! http://emstodayconference.com/App/homepage...;appname=100426 I will be releasing more information as it all comes together, most of what I am arranging will be announced AFTER the holidays and most likely around the end of January. Regardless, you know the dates, you know the location and you know the events. Now get off your butts, request time off and arrange your travel!

Well first of all, I do not typically wish/fantasize/imagine them as my wife...that comes after many other wishes-- if at all.

No more clinic for me. Yes, I have carried antibiotics prehospitally with two different services. For the argument sake, I will say it may be a case of semantics, but for the record it is self defeatist to say we can not. Firedoc, did you not see the other parts of my post...the "working field diagnosis" part. So, in essence, we do diagnose.
-
Beg to differ. We do diagnose, otherwise we would never initiate treatment of any kind. What are you treating if you do not diagnose? This is one of the old school mind sets we need to lose within our profession as it is self limiting. I diagnose all the time and prescribe antibiotics from a varied assortment on my shelf. I diagnose lacerations and suture them closed. I diagnose kidney stones and treat accordingly. I diagnose MIs, respiratory infections, and various abdominal complaints. Do I miss some or get some wrong? You betcha...but so do others in all medical professions. My point is...as a PARAMEDIC, we do indeed make diagnoses. Yes, I am aware my examples are from remote medicine, but the diagnoses are made with my current level of licensure. I still stand behind the statement that on the ambulance we diagnose every single time we go on a call, otherwise we would do no interventions and just transport. Does our diagnosis change or become more in depth once we hand off to a physician? Of course it does, but it is still a diagnosis.

Have to disagree, because again you paint this argument with broad strokes from your obviously very limited experience in EMS outside of whatever small system you worked for. 1. I could care less about supervisors being involved. I worked for an all ALS system (double medic) and one of us was a LT or an out of rank LT, so in effect there was a "supervisor" on every call. Both crew members signed the refusal in addition to any present family members or law enforcement if on scene. 2. I could care less about running more or less calls as I was paid to be on duty 24 hours at a time. Sure sleep is nice, but I do not complain about doing what I signed on for. I remind anyone who does complain that they were fully aware of all the job entailed prior to getting hired, so why are you here if you do not like it. In addition, I prefer to transport patients as refusals involved more work than the actual call. I could have them at the ER, truck in service and report finished in faster time than sitting on scene talking them out of it, still obtaining vitals (as all refusals required it), and then writing a complete report in addition to the refusal as that was required as well. If you think a simple phone call to a supervisor is going to change or prevent any of that, I say malarkey! What busy system has the time or ability to have a supervisor constantly receiving phone calls? It would require another FT position simply to answer the phones. Actually it would take 4 positions to cover a 24/48 coverage, but no one is going to stand by the phone for 24 hours a day, so it would have to be 12 hour phone coverages. Wait a minute...EUREKA!!! Who else has 24 hour a day phone and radio communication and works closely with EMS? DISPATCH does...Dispatch also has supervisors. Hmm, what if we called dispatch and put them on the phone to confirm it? Some dispatchers are medically trained..even if they aren't, all they really are doing is witnessing the patient saying "I do not wish to go to the hospital", which is exactly what a supervisor would be doing. By doing it through dispatch it would also be recorded. Even better idea. Why don't we just have a separate TAC channel and when patients want to refuse, we simply key the mic up for them and have them say their name and that they are refusing transport...that way it is all on a recorded line, in the patien's voice and does not tie up unnecessary personnel. Yeh, I really like that idea. Does it all seem crazy and outlandish? I think so. -

Drug wasting has set rules by the FEDERAL GOVERNMENT (DEA) with further guidelines imposed by individual states. Find a different argument that is relevant. -

Which is one of the reasons all of our refusals were typically witnessed by family members.
