  1. Little damper for those celebrating Samhain... http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20081101/ap_on_...r_treat_killing SUMTER, S.C. – A 12-year-old boy trick-or-treating with his family in central South Carolina was shot from inside a home Friday and killed, and his father and brother were wounded by the gunfire, authorities said. A suspect was in custody and police called the shooting an isolated incident. The family was headed home from a city-sponsored event downtown when they decided to stop at a few homes, Sumter Police Chief Patty Patterson said. The father and his four children approached a home with a porch light on about 8:30 p.m. EDT while their mother waited nearby in a vehicle. As the family was at the door, they thought they heard fireworks. The 12-year-old boy, his father and brother were all hit by the gunfire. The boy died at a hospital, Coroner Verna Moore said. The other two children were not hurt. The boy's father and brother were taken to a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. Patterson has not released the man's name or the identities of the family. She also would not release any more details about the shooting. "The investigation is continuing in to what has been a very tragic evening," Patterson said. "Our sorrow and sympathy goes out to this family." The police said there were other people inside the home at the time of the shooting, but she didn't expect any of them to be charged. A neighbor said he heard a loud noise about the time of the shooting and thought it was simply Halloween mischief. "I thought, trick-or-treat night — pranks go down. Anything goes," said Lenwood Dixon, 49, who works at a hazardous waste and recycling company. "I heard a noise like maybe gunfire, then my daughter saw a bunch of lights flashing and saw some cops." In his six years in the neighborhood, he said he wasn't aware of any violent crimes. He said a few trick-or-treaters had been on his block that night. "I'm surprised. Since I was here, I'd never heard of anything like that happening. It's a quiet neighborhood," he said. "You don't see many children in the neighborhood. It's more elderly."
  2. Sad to hear but totally uneccesary. A hero is a sandwich, that is it. There is a reason we do not perform search and rescues SOLO, nor do we do it without RIT teams in place typically. No mention of gear either, but sounds as if he was there pretty early and made the hero dash inside costing his life. No one even knew he was inside until AFTER the fire was knocked down. At least he is not leaving behind a young wife and small children.
  3. Cough cough<bump> cough
  4. I know what you mean Timmy. I currently work with an overwhelmingly large number of Aussies, Canadians and Brits. It is so frustrating when they do not speak English, which is most of the time. I can not understand a damn thing they are saying and then add their twisted slang on top of it and man it is just a mess. When are these guys going to learn and speak English???

  6. 1. Stop Studying 2. Stop thinking 3. Stop shuffling papers with both hands See how easy that was? Problem solved! I like the wrap it in tape idea. Maybe use only pens from drug reps, specifically Viagra, Cialis, Valtrex, or Herpes Awareness ones. That might make you think about what you are putting in your mouth. Seriously, it is like any other habit. It takes time to break it and you have just got to be on it at all times. I think the tape idea may be best. A different texture and taste will constantly remind you that the pen should not be in your mouth.
  7. And this is where I disagree. How else could he have gone about it a better way? How else could he get a message to the policy makers? Maybe he is not in a position to do so; however he is in a position to give a voice to this cause, in a very calm and professional, well documented manner, and in by doing so, he actually just MAY BE going after the policy makers in a most indirect route. His well publicized website and videos just might be seen by someone who knows someone who IS a policy maker and then some changes may occur. This is what it is all about. First you have to raise awareness (accomplished albeit on small scale at this time), second, do it in a way that is non offensive (think how you would have commented had he been picketing or being verbally loud or abusive), and finally spread the word (again a work in progress). We do not lose our freedom over night, no country does. It always starts with small baby steps, gradually increasing, until one day you wake up and go aww shit, what happened? Here is a story from my life, relevant to the small intrusions on our civil liberties theory, yet in reverse. I believe the point is still relevant. When I was a young child, my parents were in a situation where we knew we were going to be living in a 32 foot RV on a campground for an extended, unknown amount of time. This was my parents, my brother, sister and me all going to live happily in this tin can. Thirty days prior to the move, they moved us into a 13 ft RV, talk about being cramped. We pissed and moaned and whined as such would be expected of kids in that situation. Then the day came when our 32 ft RV arrived. Amazing! We were ecstatic because it was SO HUGE! We had so much room and were able to breathe, so amazing it was. This new perspective carried us through the long haul until our situation improved. We always knew things would get better, but we had the reality of how worse it could be. Losing our freedoms occurs the same way. A little here, a little there, until one day you wake up in a 13ft RV and say WHOA!
  8. You my friend are incorrect. There is NO such thing as a Miranda right. It is a Miranda warning which is a short summary of YOUR RIGHTS under the Constitution and the Bill of Rights as an American citizen. I will be proud to be an American when I do not have to go through worthless checkpoints to verbally declare my nationality. Sounds eerily similar to past regimes that have failed, including many religious ones. Declare your belief and you may live!
  9. Evidently, he has good reason based on the surprising responses from this civil forum alone. As a faceless man, he also represents the dissenting minority, which is fine by me. I dunno, I think the long hours and endless running the entire shift, requirements to live in border states, border towns and arresting the same illegals over and over, may have something to do with it as well. As stated per a current CBP agent friend of mine. I dunno, I think he made a valid point and raised some awareness of the issue. Standing up for our rights as citizens doesn't seem to be that big of a waste of my time. DWI and homicide suspects eh? Hmm, maybe we should set up check points in EVERY state, along EVERY highway if they are that effective. I mean why only catch the bad guys in the border states, let us get them everywhere with random checks instead of solid evidence collection. We should have 100% road checks effective immediately. It is insane, I know it is. I get first hand accounts from some very close friends. However the stories are just as impressive and no less important than stories out of any urban city in America. Anti American?? Another interesting choice of words. A carefully enacted act of civil disobedience is anti American? If history serves me correct, it is these very kinds of acts which have created and preserved our freedoms and civil liberties since America was founded. Someone has to be a voice, otherwise we will end up far worse than we ever imagined. Giving these issues a voice and enlightening the general populace is essential for us to continue to enjoy the life to which we are accustomed.
  10. Never had this problem. Every service I have worked for has allowed us 1 hour to do with as we please from 1200-1300, provided we are not on a call. After 1700, you can dress down and do whatever you please as long as evening chores are completed as well. If on a 48, and the night before was unkind, you could request eprmission to bed down early if needed.
  11. EXACTLY! So as a US citizen he has that right to not say a thing. Thanks for supporting me.
  12. I was trying to give her, the newbie NON EMT a most correct answer in about 99% of the country.
  13. Does the "Right to remain silent" or the 5th amendment mean anything? Are you telling me by not answering a local officer's question in your area, I am breaking the law? Very interesting, enough to the degree that we already think this is acceptable behavior on the law's part, and interesting that some seem to think it is no big deal.
  14. Some of the most historical injustices that were rectified were done so by "no name reporters", the average Joe's, grass root efforts, etc.
  15. Definitely sounds like a basic crew since they used an AED, they bagged only and compressed only.
  16. I actually agree with the guy. Civil disobedience is one of our last defenses against giving up every freedom we have left. The guy was very professional, he was not rude or an ass. His actions were acceptable and his questions and questioning of the checkpoint were valid. The ignorance is on the government's side, the burden of proof is theirs to provide; which as evidenced by this video, they can not do. I think we are, and we have already given up way too many rights all in the name of Homeland Security. Scare tactics work wonders, people are willing to give up almost everything to feel safe and protected, especially when they feel hopeless or defenseless. This is how it all starts. Years and years of releasing small liberties, tolerating the minor snatch and grabs here and there, until eventually we are no better off than the rest of the world whom we try to promote our sense of democracy within their borders, welcomed or not.
  17. Standing orders are no longer "standing" if you have to reach ONLINE control to do or perform them unless in your guideline book it states to contact med control prior to doing XYZ intervention. In addition, contacting medical control is to gain permission or information on how to do something outside the norm of your standing orders. Standing orders "stand alone" meaning you perform them with no oversight. It is set treatment in set situation. An online doc can elect to take you above a higher level or deviate from, meaning beyond the normal pre-set standing orders, but again this is done with online guidance and as long as it complies with your scope of practice within your state for whatever level you are at.
  18. You have two types of medical cotrol. 1. Off line 2. Online Off line medical control is also known as/considered to be "Standing Orders". Standing orders are exactly that...they are a doctors orders for you to do this or that depending on whatever the occasion may be without contacting the medical director or the physician on duty for guidance. Online medical control is when you have a doctor on phone, radio, webcam, whatever your system uses because of: 1. Your standing orders do not apply to this situation 2. You need to do something not covered within the standing orders and you want permission or guidance 3. You are just down right unsure of how to proceed Does this clarify it for you?
  19. Unfortunately, this correspondent is indeed "out there" at times; not always, but enough to get odd looks from others. Anyways, this correspondent did indeed have it in writing as a written directive to continue using medications to the 6 month expiration date printed on them from the manufacturer. A copy of the written directive was obtained to ease this correspondent's mind with regards to dispensing the medications and it came straight from the US military. However, when this correspondent left that past employ, he destroyed all relevant documents associated with that company and no longer has any valid proof other than to say it was so.
  20. Update for all the Canadians that have contacted me. I have an address for you to ship to through the Canadian postal system and I believe it should be free of charge. That is what the Canuck posties here tell me anyways.
  21. Hey guys, I am in a position currently where I have a lot of direct contact with injured Afghani children. These tykes are the collateral damage of the war for the most part. I am dealing with ages 2-10 years. Anyways, we transport them to the NATO hospital, give them all the best care and surgery we can, and when they are ready for discharge to a local hospital or home, off they go. However, during their stay, we like putting them in PJs and we have a shortage of them in theater obviously. We also like to send them home with clothes, especially with winter right around the corner. If anyone is interested, please PM me and I will provide an address for you to send clothes to. I will personally be receiving the boxes and distributing the clothes. I do not expect you to go out and buy these items, unless you have the desire and the means, but if you happen to have some laying around, or have kids who have outgrown them, please send them on my way. Bright colors, cartoon characters are enjoyed by kids of every culture, so keep that in mind please. A lot of these kids are now permanently disfigured or missing limbs and this is just one way to bring a little light and joy into their lives. Thank you my friends....AK
  22. I think the original poster figured it out by now, since I noticed Celtic revived a 2 year old thread.
  23. As one who has studied and worked as safety officer, you need to really, I mean really break it down to an insane level of stupidity. You would not believe some of the drivel I have written for such a simple task. I am going to take a few liberties as you did not specify, but let us assume you are using an electrical coffee pot, as I do not know any other way to make coffee....LOL. Task: Prepare a cup of instant coffee Steps: Ensure coffee pot is intact with no chipped glass. Ensure power cord is not frayed, cut, or damaged. Ensure the correct voltage is being supplied to the coffee pot...i.e 110V or 220V Ensure coffee pot is on a fire resistant surface and in the workplace it has to have a matting to collect any spillage form accidental overflow or spills. Ensure proper fire control is present at all times, such as a fire extinguisher within 10 feet. Fill top of coffee pot with water. Add coffee grounds and filter. Turn coffee pot on. Once coffee drips thru and collects into the pot, you must now remove the pot from the machine to pour into your mug. Carefully to avoid touching the hot pot, remove the pot and approach the mug. Ensure the mug is resting on a counter, as you do not want to be holding it with your other hand whilst pouring, as you might suffer a burn. Be sure to have slight space between your body and the counter where you are pouring the coffee in case of any back splash that may burn your skin or get into your eyes. Once coffee is poured, return the pot safely to the machine and put it in its proper resting place. When walking back and forth with this pot full of hot coffee, be sure no one else is around, especially little ones as you may spill it upon them. When you put the pot back in the machine, ensure the power is disconnected or turned off as you do not want the burner to stay hot and continue heating the pot. Now you are ready to add you sugar. Is the sugar in a packet or is this a lump of sugar? If it is a packet, carefully tear the packet and avoid a paper cut on your finger. Pour the sugar into the coffee and stir. Stir gently with proper utensil as you do not want it to splash out and burn your skin. Do not stir with your finger or any other object not designed for insertion into steaming hot liquids. Safe work method would include: Mentally reviewing all these hazards prior to task at hand. Protect skin and eyes when needed. No rushed or sudden movements. etc etc I hope all this gave you an idea of what she probably expects based on your description of her. Good Luck!
