WOw, that is the most bass ackwards thing I have heard in quite some time. What is the point in requiring one to be a CNA before being a nurse. That makes absolutely no sense at all. How does being a CNA ensure success or anything for that matter to the student of nursing. SO they know how to get vitals, wipes ass, and make beds...whoopee doo... Especially for all the people that are going the BSN route. They have 4 years of school ahead of them and the scool is going to require them to get a CERTIFICATE that takes anywhere from 6-12 weeks(depending on the area) before enrolling...??? Are they going to require work experience as well to be in the program. That is just dumb. That is like requiring a doc to be a med asst first.

Damn it Dust...Stop thread hogging!! You already have one thread dedicated to you, why must you take over another?? Now I have to move this thread to FAQ about Dust. LOL
-
Well, please rest assurred, if someone was full of it, we would have stopped them long before they got 5000 posts..lol. Anyways, Dust is a valuable resource here. At times he comes off as a know it all, pompous ass, but he can't help who he is..lol. He has a lot of good information to share and if he doesnt know it, he will get you steered in the right direction. There are many guys here that are valuable resources. Ridryder is another good one to listen to. As for me, I just blow a lot of smoke up your ass, I know nothing. ANyways, as far as Dusts work history, I see about 33 years of experience. A few of his jobs were at the same time as most people in EMS can relate. We dont get paid squat so we work multiple jobs. DUst had multiple careers. He has been in EMS since he was 16, not as a medic. Check out his photos and see that goofy young boy with a cheesy grin wearing a white ambulance shirt. Back in those days, the standards were not what they are today so junior members providing care was a reality. Dust will have to tell you anything else you want to know.

This is going to be good. I can not wait to use my mod skills on this one...lol. Another newbie calling out Dust....its like the 4th of July

I have nothing to say about the topic at hand, I just wanted a chance to have my post underneath Dusts...so everyone has a chance to see my new tag line. Only one person has noticed it despite it being up for a little while. Since Dust is old, I will make it very obvious for him to see it.

For the most part yes. The laws/ordinances may vary state by state, city by city and more importantly service by service. I have used side flood lights while moving but it was only to light up the dark side of a highway while looking for an MVC or pt on the side of the road. If you are lighting them up just to be malicious, that is just wrong. It is an abuse of our equipment and only lessens our respectability in the public's eye. I admit, I once had the same attitude and I see it all the time now in newbies and even some of the old farts. For some reason, when we climb behind the wheel of an amulance, we think we are impervious to accidents and we think we own the road. We do not by any means have either of these. I have couseled many partners who lay on the horn excessively, flash llights, tailgate, or just make hand signals, yell at the person, or my all time pet peeve...YELL on the PA....all these behaviors make us look like idiots. Doing any of these never gets us to a call faster, it only diminishes our image and actually make us more susceptible to an accident as our minds are not where they should be. The best way to deter a tailgater is to let off the gas, slow a little and allow them to pass.
-
Now I will explore the other side of the fence, please bare with me as I am a CEVO instructor and have been for many years. Please take all I say into consideration and dont get angry. YOU were at fault as much as the tailgater was. 1. When you have a tailgater, you let off the gas and allow them to pass. You NEVER tap your brakes..period. 2. If they can not pass due to road circumstances, you find a way to pull over and let them pass if they continue to tailgate after letting off the gas. 3. As a driver, you never get on the cell phone. That is what your partner is for.( I reread and saw that you were handing it to yor partner..good job) 4. You had already resigned yourself mentally to the fact that one of the "dummy drivers" was going to hit you that day. If you think like this, it is sure to happen. 5. YOU were obivously following too close as well if you had to make such a sudden stop to avoid hitting a dummy driver in front of you. All of the things I mentioned are covered in any EVOC/CEVO or defensive driving course for emergency vehicle operators. Because this is standard knowledge and practice for anyone driving an emergency vehicle, a good lawyer would have no problem shredding you on the stand and making you liable should the other person decide to sue. Chances are, if they do sue, your service would just settle out of court instead on going through the expensive motions of a trial. Now I realize no one is a perfect driver, but this crash could have been avoided very simply. There are no accidents, as with any crash there was some preventable step to avoid this. A lot of times it is hard for us to do this cause it means we have to concede and give up personal space or time but if that is what it takes to keep us all safe then that is what we must do. Safe driving involves an entirely new mindset, one that is very difficult to implement but it should be done.

What does this mean? We use the term and do not know the history. This is what I have learned. In the 1890's, a boxer by the name Charles "kid" McCoy used to feign illness or spread rumors prior to a fight to psych out his opponnets. He would then show up in perfect form much to his adversary's dismay. This led people and reporters to wonder if they were seeing "the real McCoy" or not. So as legend has it, that is where the real McCoy comes from. On a side note, he was quite tricky. In one of his fights against a deaf/mute, he suddenly dropped his gloves as if the bell had rung. When the deaf/mute fighter saw this, he did the same and turned to his corner. McCoy then walked over and knocked him out.

New ACLS guidelines: the unconscious with FBAO?!
akflightmedic replied to fiznat's topic in Patient Care
I have to disagree Nussy, chest compression instruments have been around for decades, you are too young to know about a thumper, heck I only got to use it a few times before it went to the way side. The newer versions have been out for several years and were heavily tested before being marketed like they are. As for the new guidelines being published, no that is not the case. They were just released to the masses, they have been published for a while already. Instructors or those who actively stay in the loop, knew about all these changes during the middle of last year. Now they are being rolled out to the mass providers. I dont think there is any coorelation between the two however I have been wrong before. -

Scenarios Needed For Paramedic Character
akflightmedic replied to writer806's topic in General EMS Discussion
2000 words, not a lot to do character development, especially for an EMS storyline. If you want a different twist and a story that involves an internal conflict with change I have a few ideas I can share. If you like them and want more detail, PM me and I will share details for what you need. 1. I delivered a full term baby not knowing it was only expected to live a few minutes after birth(mom forgot that piece of info). However, after delivery, she wanted me to baptise the baby( I am very non religous). 2. Another scenario was treating cardiac arrest of an infant with the parents standing there, only to find out at the hospital the child had been physically and sexually abused by the parents. The child was 4 months old! Conflict could be wishing severe harm upon them or wondering if I am in the right business. Feel free to adjust the conflict anyway you see fit. If you want mroe just ask. -
Although the piece is not funny, I moved it to this forum as this is the catch all for most things including poetry.

Need more information.... Where are you located, what is your background, who have you been applying for, how does your resume look, etc. Quite frankly, no I dont have a hard time finding a job. Major shortage of medics nationwide so please give me more info and I will share what I know.

If you will re read the original post, it was YOUR fellow Illinoisers that made the comment stating questions regarding envenomations was unneccessary for you guys. This all came out of YOUR state from YOUR top emergency service officials. Yes your state test was severly compromised, most notably by the CFD. Now that the fire guys are not passing the NREMT test, the head fire officials are camaigning to get the state test reinstated cause the NR test is too hard. These are not our statements so please go back and reread everything. The sarcasm that followed making fun of IL EMTs was hypothetical, referencing the "what ifs" of this watered down state test reemerging. Do you see the point we are making?? Why on earth would we pick and choose what should be taught in an EMT class depending on whether or not the situation is in our area? It is stupid illogical thinking and it is being stirred up because basically the FD guys are unable to pass a standarized test.
