In Medic class I was surprised the first time we had to pick up a walkie talkie and radio a fake medical control in another room, its proved a very useful skill. I never got any orders in class, always jacked it up lol

Take vitals .. listen to lung sounds If you don't know what normal is how can you know what abnormal is!!?!?!?!?!? Do the little things for the nurses and technicians and they will find you when/if something cool is going on! good luck.

That looks interesting and I think it would be good to have, and at about one cup of Starbucks AKA 3$'s a week its well worth it. I need to do a little more digging before I'm convinced you need it. Most employers have you covered to a limited extent I'm sure. Anyone Have any experience with company's/services legal protection?

Silly questions ... Have you tried calling back after the original orders given were unsuccessful ? What was the result of being unable to intubate these lightly sedated patients? Have you tried speaking to one of those Doctors as a Qa/QI process or Call review? Can you sit down with the doctor to discuss it? While on the phone/radio try a line such as "repeat orders back to doctor thank you but just in case that doesn't work as planned I'd like to have XYZ ready/on stand by"

Everything you see in the Hospital will be useful to learn, and important later in your career, enjoy your experience, as far as stories go on your clinical then tell us a story ...

Ive worked with guys, gals, gals turned guy, and guys turned gals, and just like Richard, been hit on, have done hitting on etc... It all comes down to your relationship not your job, you could be in EMS, LE, or many other positions that would have you and a female all alone for hours on end. Its all about how you act with them. My advice, is a mix of what's already been said my only flare to add is if you need therapy I'm always available for a consult!

I'm not well enough versed in the local tactical situation, however the only EMT's or Paramedics going to such scenes as you described, are going to be members of the Emergency Services Unit, which are experienced NYPD Officers who are EMT's or Paramedics. I've done stand by's for barricaded EDP's, Hostage Situations, Mental health and hygiene Warrants, and in all these situations the Emergency Services Unit takes care of the tactical aspect, then rush the patient out to us. I would venture to say this is different from location to location.

So basically, There are a bunch of tactical courses offered, but actually putting that training to use is seldom needed, and I don't think there is any pay differential around here.
