Well, see day one I was nice about it, spoke to my supervisor about it was told it wouldn't happen again. Day 2, same thing, so you are right I wasn't as polite. Secondly, there is no other units, I work out of a satellite base we only do one shift per ambulance, no one to pick up when you leave off. Happiness, FACT is, you didn't have all the facts because you didn't read the post where I explained and apologized for using that as a generalization. All I'm asking is you read all before interjecting. Oh and on a bit more crass note, If paramedics don't understand generalizations you take family member statements to the letter? You don't think the generalize? You as the paramedic don't generalize when you give a 'general' impression? Just some thoughts. Chaser, I think thats a great idea, and I will follow up in writing to the appropriate people. Although I don't think my decision was wrong, perhaps I went about it wrong, but school is more important then work in my values list.

Since not many people can read maybe this font and size will help. The words "STICK IT" never came out of my mouth. It is a generalization I use. [/font:1ccb682d25]

I'm not worried about the job, easily replaced. As we all know EMS is a very small community, burning a bridge here, can burn a bridge elsewhere later. My last paycheck comes via direct deposit tonight, and if by chance they want there ID, uniform etc... they can come and get them, and i will hand them all of there patches the uniform isn't what they care about just the patch. Oh well, appreciate your help, I've decided to make the separation end on my terms, by giving them two weeks notice, since my supervisor wouldn't respond to me. Figure this way next place I'm going I can at least say I left because of my reasons, hopefully.

Pardon my generalization. I don't feel the need to convey the entire details of the conversation, the basics are it didn't matter what dispatch said, I was not taking the call, school was more important. Simply put, I told them where to stick it, and left.

Keeping the job is not the issue, have an unrelated to EMS job interview tomorrow (this will prevent a similar problem from happening.) The issue here is, EMS is a small community, Most of upper management where I work, are my instructors in class. If you burn a bridge you never know when you'll need it. I don't even care about the reference, just worried about the future. Dust, if they were to beg for me back well, I'd again tell them where to stick it. Spenac, I work a 9-1-1 and transport situation, basically you work 9-1-1 with the occasional transport call (Like it was said, its all about income to them.) The call at 4:50pm was a transport call going into NJ. I didn't include this wasn't sure it was relevant but seems it is. Assuming any transport to jersey takes an hour each way, at 4:50pm in rush hour it easily will take 2 or 3 hours just to get there. There was no way I could take the call, and get to class. We all know school comes first.

If they assumed I quit on Thursday why did I work Friday ? Further, If you get restricted(suspended.) They take you out of the phone system immediately I'm still in it. Further, even assuming they thought I quit, why would my supervisor who got numerous messages/voice mails about scheduling from me not return the call?

Well this is as good as any place to ask. Heres the situation, I recently started medic school. When I informed my job they asked if I could do my best to maintain a fulltime schedule, and they would accomodate me anyway they could. So I agreed to work 7a to 3p school being about 30 min away from base, and class not starting till 6pm. This gives me a nice cushion for thoose late jobs. Well first day of class I asked to be off on time, I had to take care of scool related stuff before class began, they kept me on the road till about 5pm.Got to class on time but wasn't able to take care of other necessities. Next day spoke to my supervisor said if this is how it is on day one, it will surely only get worse on day 100, 200, etc.. My supervisor cringed but understood, asked me what I wanted, I said well I dont have class Fri., Sun., I can do 12's or a 16, as well as every other saturday when I dont have class and do a 8, 12, or 16. She said okay. Later that day at about 4:50pm I was still on the road and they wanted me to take another call, at this point I told dispatch where to stick it, cuz I'm not taking any more calls I have to get to class. Assuming the call only took 30 min (which never happens average is about an hour,) but again assuming it was only 30 min, I might, or might not have made it to class on time. Well Dispatch told their supervisor, That supervisor called the office, who called their supervisor, who called the field supervisor, who called my supervisor, who then called me. Well when it came back down to me, I was in the middle of a 'shitstorm.' The 'telephone game' changed everything dispatch and I had said into things 10 times worse, needless to say my supervisor and I didn't finish the day on best of terms. I came into work the next day nothing abnormal, regular day, regular shift. Checked my schedule at the end of the day and I was not on the schedule. Okay maybe my supervisor couldn't meet my scheduling needs on such short notice. I called her to discuss it, no answer. I called, left messages. No answer, It has been nearly a week with no answer, and I;m not on the schedule for the following week either. What is the appropriate course of action from here? I could go around her to the office, or one of her supervisors but I don't really want to 'burn the bridge' or burn any bridges for that matter. Lost in what to do, suggestions?

Yes the city does need competent EMT's and future Medics. The price of the city is certainly not cheaper then LI and the pay isn't outstanding, but you can make a meager living on it.

Most including myself will tell you volunteering is the reason we as health care providers get paid next to nothing. Why pay people a good high wage if significant amounts of people are willing to give away the service for free. I know a lot of long island is volunteering however, if you come down to the city most is paid.

Most of NYC paramedic programs have a minimum of 6 months, or 200 hours (with a patient, not 200 hours of time at work, not 100 driving 100 with the patient 200 documented with patients.) Do not let that discourage you, most paramedic programs start in September, so if you started class now, you should have a good 7-8 months after your class before paramedic class begins. If you take a course that begins sooner thats good too. A few things I thought I would clear up. NY recognizes, First responder, EMT-B, AEMT-I, AEMT-CC, and AEMT-P. The curriculum's for these certifications can be found here; http://www.health.state.ny.us/nysdoh/ems/educ.htm If paramedic school is what you wish to pursue, here is a list of all the paramedic courses for the state of NY, including who to contact and phone numbers. http://www.health.state.ny.us/nysdoh/ems/p...dicsponsors.pdf If you need anymore information about anything feel free to send me a PM, and/or ill check the thread.

Got to love when Dust agrees with you, its a lot easier then when he disagrees. +5 for me

Wendy ... I don't know your situation, or your mothers for that matter, but have we considered a different nursing home? Not that that will be much better, but perhaps there is a chance. When working transport, I can't begin to tell you how many patients and family members were returning to nursing homes after all sorts of abuse or when working 911 and getting called in for all sorts of stupidity. Seems to happen too often. 2 cents deposited.

I would like to point out, redistributing everything from your belt to pockets is not lightening the load. simply making my pockets larger. (target at a few people who keep saying put things in your pockets. Now, also I would like to say. I hate things in my pockets, they annoy me, and when crawling in the back of a car in an mva, or into a cluttered garbaged fill project apartment I don't need things all over my person. If for nothing else it makes me feel heat quicker, and I lose my head when not attached searching for things in my pocket drives me nuts. Not that a belt makes this much better BUT I can remove a belt and toss it aside(although I do not have a belt, I support the idea)

Emergency Vehicles & Red Light Cameras . . .
tskstorm replied to NickD's topic in Equiqment and Apparatus
well 2 things, here, what we do when we are in the ambulance and another emergency vehicle is traveling the same way we light it up to break up the traffic b4 they get there then we kill the lights and siren after we cleared a path(when possible of coursE) PD and other ems always returns the love back, FD is the only one who doesn't but they rarely have the opportunity too. maybe people in ny are more anxious but i could be in the right lane of a 6 lane each direction light and be lights and sirens and cars from every lane will take the light. -
