  1. well bottom line ive had 2-3 phones pre-ems and ill have it post-ems. and i dont need to justify them to you even though i have just for kicks and giggles. If you look at sprint's website, under "phone's" you will see a note on the bottom right, that says "nextel" "web exclusive" or nothing meaning its sprint.
  2. Okay, I guess I wasn't clear, I see examples of this multiple times a day. I understand some people just wont tolerate it, but i doubt 95% of there patients are not tolerant.
  3. I dont need a car ... i live in nyc, i get to work by train in 15 min. And, I dont want to get rid of my sprint because its on an employee account, its 10$'s a month for unlimited everything. My nextel is my contact for some people who I can only walkie talkie, and The helio's because I'm an internet addict. And i dont carry these phones to work, i carry them everywhere always, and they aren't always on my belt, usually in my pocket lol
  4. I'm guessing I'm a whacker, I certainly carry a bunch of things on my belt. I have a few(3) personal cell phones (helio [internet fool], sprint [old work phone that still has an employee plan], nextel [old work phone]) I know this makes me foolish to begin with, but i've grown accustom to it. When on the job, I also carry a work nextel, and the work pager, though when possible I ask my partner to carry those. Some of the girls don't want to carry them or whatever so I keep them on my belt. I also carry a bp cuff, steth, pen light in pockets for easy access. Off the job I carry a pair of gloves and my certification in my wallet, but I will admit I've taken loose pieces of equipment here and there and made miniature first aid kits for my mom, dad and grandparents that my mom and dad keep in the car in case anything happens to my little brother, or in case anything happens to my grandparents. after reading my post I think I've figured it out, in order to be a good whacker, you need a car. *shrugs* I'm an emt, I'm poor lol
  5. They've looked through ER security tapes in a few of the cases, and it seems to either be inconclusive as to who did it, or, the person is wearing something over there uniform, and n-95 and goggles etc... So no one has been identified from what I've heard. Well of course some people insist on walking in, I can understand that. What I said was one example of many. I've seen the FDNY come blazing lights and sirens into an ER then a 60 year old woman walks out of the ambulance. Benefit of the doubt, sure, 60 year old woman arguing to walk, I just don't see it happening. Oh, and if she can walk, why were you on lights and sirens. I dunno, I just wanna know what the policy is on walking patients in. I'm sure someone from the FDNY will enlighten me Again no hating on FDNY I love you, just amazed at what I see from some crews.
  6. Whats the deal with FDNY tech's and putting iodine and surgical lube on private companies and hospital based ambulances. Lately there has been numerous discussion among crews that this has happened too. ALSO. What is the FDNY's policy about patient's walking, into the ER ? I'm not so bent on rules the guy with a laceration is getting carried in on a stretcher, but last week I watched a patient with head trauma and significant bleeding get walked into the ER. Normally I would think they were just being lazy, But this happened at Bellevue Hospital. I'm sure you are all aware of the FDNY ems station there. Just curious if they have a lot of guts to walk the patient in without a stretcher, or they weren't required too. Thx No hate intended to the FDNY I love you all
  7. Something not as safe as what is suggested here, if you feel your partner is skipping important steps and offers no explanation, ask a nurse, doctor, or even your supervisor. Never feel embarrassed or out of place for being a advocate for your patient. If your partner is doing an incorrect thing, you will have to pay the price as much as he does, unless you speak up, and ask questions. Never blindly follow anyone! I'm not telling you to be a snitch, always discuss things with your partner first and most likely there will be an explanation.
  8. this might sound a little odd but if you are expecting the pt to puke, try and puke before you get in the ambulance, maybe that will settle you down a bit.
  9. ahh the keyword i should have searched under was accelerated, oopsie ... thx
  10. i think its a big joke myself ... what do you all think ? http://medicschoice.com/ p.s. sorry if this is a repeat
  11. Well, not to get into specifics, but i was given a window punch, and it came with zero instructions, and i know these things are supposed to be spring loaded, but i have no idea how to load it, or use it .. did a google search and an EMT city search and came up empty .. it looks like this one ... http://www.widgetsupply.com/page/WS/PROD/center-punch/BCX43 thx
  12. appropriate sleep prior to your shift, diet, will help keep you awake, so will getting a laptop, portable dvd player, music players. frisbee and football are great idea's. I personally like to read, even if its just a newspaper or magazine, an emt/ems book, a good novel. now this might seem a bit foreign to some, but the company i work for we (the crew) arent required to clean the ambulance outside, and most times the inside gets lightly touched/ improperly cleaned, so if you have the time to do a through inside and out cleaning, every nook and cranny time deal. other entertainment devices i see commonly used; playstation portable nintendo DS study guides ( i have been told it is a bad idea to study anything ems related in the ambulance, last thing you want is a worried family seeing an EMT/medic textbook, while you are working on there family member, but to each his own) sudoku/word search/cross words there are many others im not thinking of, i liked dusts idea's good luck
  13. I'm not directly working the parade, but the parade runs from 44th to 86th st on 5th ave, and the medic ambulance usual spot is 5th ave and 90th so being as we are going to be that close I'm assuming we will get calls from there. I don't know for sure, just want to be prepared if need be thanks for your advice ...
  14. Perhaps even other similar holidays. This week, my supervisor called me and asked if i could pick up a shift riding with a medic this upcoming Sunday, without any hesitation I agreed. Later that day I was discussing the extra shift with my partner, and he was surprised I would agree to work during the parade. When he mentioned the parade, is the first time I realized I had agreed to working during the parade. I wasn't planning on attending or doing anything special during the parade, but I was warned by other coworkers that it is a truly hectic day. Not having experienced any holidays or events as an EMT, only as a student/third (cinco de mayo and new years eve, both in red hook brooklyn.) I was wondering what I should expect, what types of calls? How bad is it in reality? Is this another EMS "fish story" (the one where the fish grows in size as the story is told, and in the end is 1000 times larger then it originally was)? Just looking for general opinions on holidays/events. Oh and before I get ripped on this post, 1, yes people not in N.Y.C. could help but I really would like to obtain information from personnel who have worked the parade and to my knowledge the parade is only in N.Y.C.. 2, I did a search but didn't find anything on this event, although I didn't search on other events, I'm going to venture to say it has been discussed, but again I mostly wanted specific advice but all advice welcomed. Thanks!
  15. although not a medic school student yet i start in sept. my schedule/plan is the following, my medic class is exactly 12 months btw, 6am to 2pm working(as an emt-b of course) 2-6 study /travel to school 6-10 school. and thats mon tues wed thurs, friday 6am-2pm work, 3pm-11pm clinical, and my job allows me to change my days working/days off so if i have clinicals i must do in the AM hours on a weekday i switch around. oh and i have class every other saturday from 9-5, weeks without school clinical. just my plan, good luck with it all ..
  16. just like if you call 9-1-1 when you call a private company, they have a triage/dispatcher protocols. so thats how private companies who traditionally do transport get the occasional emergency calls. then that same company will most like also have come of there units attatched to the "911 system," which in ny is FDNY they have FDNY logo's on there doors and are based on the same system. if they see all there 911 units are on calls, and there is a call thats an emergency they will send a "transport" unit i think that covers the basics, more questions ? ask away i'll try and help best i can
  17. well to answer your original post, no there isnt a seperate service for the jews. they simply have there own religion based VOLUNTEER service. we have FDNY, hospital based EMS, who both respond to emergency calls, then we have private companies who do transport and emergency calls (transcare, amr, seniorcare etc...) then we have volunteers. i think that covers the basics, based on what you said you have similar system, the difference i see is our private companies do emergency runs besides just transport. does that answer your question ?
  18. lol enough, i think he gets it lol
  19. okay you win .. theres also a police department for every town outside of NYC, suffok county, nassau county, and all the little towns and stuff ... hardly a monopoly ...
  20. they do, nypd and ny sherif's office. +5 for me cuz im a jerk
  21. sure emt-b, emt-b water rescue, emt-b mountain rescue, emt-b farm equipment rescue(yes there is a farm equipment certification) but thats all included under emt-b in my eyes.
  22. there are 4 levels of ems that im aware of. CFR= Certified First Responder 1 CFR 2 EMT-B 3 EMT-I 4 EMT-P
  23. and just some information, ive been flagged down, on my way to and from work and nothing is worse then not having your ambulance with full equipment when someone is in distress and even with all our equipment, we cannot fully help a patient, as we dont cure problems in the field we stabalize till we can get to a hospital where a dr. can cure the pt. (general statement, not specific to any one call) food for thought, take it for what its worth.
