  1. I thought that somewhere down the line they were going to make the PCP a Canadian wide license. Might be wrong. On that list you can add to the PCP the King airway. I have been told that I will get this protocol in the next year or so..... We will see. By the rock when did you leave us.......
  2. Hey Herbie I have a question. In my 15 yrs I have had this twice and I wanted to know if when you ascolated his chest or ab. did you notice a swoshing sound. We medivaced a guy many years ago and he was already diagnosed and I had the opportunity to hear this sound. It is very distinctive just wondering is you noticed it.
  3. This actually sounds like a pt I just had not long ago. My call 71 female called for a fall pt fell dislocated L shoulder HX Stroke, triple bypass, type II diabeties, severe arthritis When the hospital finally was able to pop the shoulder into place they admitted her for observations. With in 2 days she was medivaced out she had just deteriated over time. They discovered she had lung blood clots. They put her on a blood thinner and brought her home. With in 2 days again she deteriated and again was medivaced out. As it turned out the blood thinner was to strong and had started internal bleeding. When they tried to regulate the blood thinners the clots came back. After about 3 days they got it straight and she is again a vibrant community memeber. She has a bit of rehablitation to go but will live to see her grandson recieve his masters degree. Dont know if that is what this case but is sounds about the same.....
  4. A dog lover, whose dog was a bitch 'in heat', agreed to look after and house her neighbors' male dog while they were away on vacation. She had a large house however, and believed that she could keep them apart. But as she was drifting off to sleep she heard awful howling and moaning sounds, rushed downstairs and found the dogs locked together, in obvious pain and unable to disengage as so frequently happens when they mate. Unable to separate them and perplexed as to what to do next, although it was late, she called the vet, who answered in a very grumpy voice. Having explained the problem to him, the vet said, "Hang up the phone and place it down alongside the dogs. I will then call you back and the noise of the ringing will make the male lose his erection and be able to withdraw". "Do you think that will work?" she asked "It just worked for me" he replied.
  5. A young man received a parrot as a gift. The parrot had a bad attitude and an even worse vocabulary. Every word out of the bird's mouth was rude, obnoxious and laced with profanity. The man tried and tried to change the bird's attitude by consistently saying only polite words, playing soft music and anything else he could think of to 'clean up' the bird's vocabulary. Finally, the man had had enough and he yelled at the parrot. The parrot yelled back. The man shook the parrot and the parrot got angrier and even more rude. The man, in desperation, threw up his hand, grabbed the bird and put him in the freezer. For a few minutes the parrot squawked and kicked and screamed. Then suddenly there was total quiet. Not a peep was heard for over a minute. Fearing that he'd hurt the parrot, the man quickly opened the door to the freezer. The parrot calmly stepped out onto the man’s outstretched arms and said, "I believe I may have offended you with my rude language and actions. I'm sincerely remorseful for my inappropriate transgressions and I fully intend to do everything I can to correct my rude and unforgivable behavior." The man was stunned at the change in the bird's attitude. As he was about to ask the parrot what had made such a dramatic change in his behavior, the bird spoke-up, very softly, "May I ask what the turkey did?" HAPPY THANKSGIVING
  6. So really if you look at my EXAMPLES in the wrong perpective. They were examples of my uses with the KED. I didnt go into detail with any of my examples. Dont assume I didnt follow my protocols and not have a hard collar on. Dont assume that she walked a mile to get to the ambulance as a matter of fact it was a few steps and she got in the side door before I could do anything.... Jeez. Happiness, re the patient who you KEDed in the ambulance, I must presume, on your paperwork you followed the mantra: Quote Document, DOCUMENT, DOCUMENT ! I am very good at doumentaion of my calls. I dot the i's and cross the tees.
  7. I will always love this equipment as I have said many times. I use it when it is warrented and I have never used it on anyone that is NOT stable. I have used it for the following. Guy who fell off roof and landed on feet. He crawled to his car and go to the hospital parking lot and couldnt get out. 2month old baby that fell off of change table. Heavy equipment operator that fell off of log sorter, foot got caught in something and dislocated hip. Used to get him out of the heli and onto a board. Head on collison (under 20 clicks)girl walked to the ambulance sat in the captains chair before I could say stop and then said my neck hurts. Other pt was stuck in car with a broken ankle. There are a few more but you have to use commen sense in any piece of equipment and if it is not going to be benifical for the pt then dont use it. I think what happens in our training is that we are told when to use and when not to use in call`s but forget to think outside of the box. I dont use anything else but a pillow and zap straps for broken ankles, was never trained in it but it is the best thing I have found.
  8. zippyRN, on 18 November 2010 - 04:43 AM, said: Entonox can cause altered levels of consciousness, but as both myself and other posters have remarked the nature of demand valve administration and the rapid offset tend to make this self limiting. So first of all Im going to say I have use entonox in the field alot and have never had any problems with it as I follow my protocols in its use. Second I have used entonox when I was having my first child so I do know the effects of it.. I would to state that entonox does cause altered levels of consciousness, the word "can" is not the appropriate word. I do have to say that the change is not in my opinion ever going to be one that makes you worry about masking things. The biggest difference I have seen in a persons mental state is emotional, as in starting to laugh or cry. Dwayne So you have seen Entonox at therapeutic levels that caused no change in mentation? Really? Has this been anyone else's experience? And if you believe that giving them the option to self medicate and then removing it to check mentation every 5-10 mins and then giving it back is the same as monitoring mentation status, then you have no real idea what I'm talking about. I have never seen entonox at a therapeutic level cause no change but in my answer above I have discribed what mental states I have wittnessed. I have had to discontitue use in one pt as his 02 levels started to drop but that was the only time. I think with entonox the fact is that they do self medicate and in my experience it is them that have the pain (in which I cant feel) and they dont over medicate themselves. I'm sure there are cases of it but that is why you do your assessment. Now with all of this being said entonox is a drug protocol that can be taught in a day or two. I feel it is really only benifical in moving a pt in pain or for short trips (I am generaly about 5 min from my hospital in my calls). There are times that I wish I had other drugs in my arsinal of drugs but to be honest I dont think that I would use them all that often and there fore may loose my skill in admistering them. With all of the Nac drugs that are available to those of higher skill levels I hope to hell that when they are being taught it isnt in a weekend course and that the training time is appropriate to the drug. Well have a nice day Happiness

  11. Questionable employees Can you imagine working for a company that has a little more than 300 Employees and has the following statistics? 30 have been accused of spousal abuse. 9 have been arrested for fraud 14 have been accused of writing bad cheques. 95 have directly or indirectly bankrupted at least 2 businesses. 4 have done time for assault. 55 cannot get a credit card due to bad credit. 12 have been arrested on drug related charges. 4 have been arrested for shoplifting. 16 are currently defendants in lawsuits. 62 have been arrested for drunk driving in the last year! Can you guess which organization this is? .. It is the 301 MP's in the Canadian Parliament! The same group that cranks out hundreds of new laws designed to keep the rest of us in line?! Which one did you vote for? TAKEN FROM THE OTTAWA CITIZEN (Pass this on to every Canadian you know)

  14. So as this saga proceeds I would like to give an example of how a protest should be done and that is PEACFULLY and with respect. Just so it is know I have not taken anything personally even the statement Canada can go pound sand comment just made me laugh. And I will let it be known that I am dissapointed in some of the members of this community defending the action of these people in the UK. JP you have consistantly hidden behind freedom of speech and if this happened in the US it would be legal well it did not happen in the US, you have even gone so far as to accuse the Bobby's in London of falsly arresting these people and saying that they should be fired etc. All of this comes down to who can win the argument. This isn't a winnable argument in my eyes and I guess nor should it be, as we are all entittle to our opinion. When it comes down to it JP you and I will admit Squint (even though that was a clever little thing)and even myself may have been disrespectful. The OP of this only wanted to show us something that in her eyes was appauling and didnt expect it to sprial the way it has. So the following comes to mind as we on Haida Gwaii celebrated the 25th year of Lyell Island protest. Lyell Island in Haida is Athlii Gwaii. The Haida took a stand that could have become very violent and made the effort to make it peaceful. It is called RESPECT and though out this whole thread that has been the point that has been forgotten http://www.vancouversun.com/travel/Lyell+Island+years+later/3822087/story.html http://archives.cbc.ca/politics/federal_politics/clips/6854/ Please read the whole artical because it does show that peacfull and respectfull demonstrations are possible in our world.
  15. Dwaynes quote I do wonder about folks saying that Nitrous should be allowed for basics based on the fact that is a relatively safe drug and self administered. I've never used it, but I can accept that it's relatively safe, the problem I have is that it may mask sysmptoms, mental/physiological that should be caught throughout an ongoing assessment. Many medics I know can't manage that on unaltered patients, I'm not sure I'm comfortable with that at the basic level. But again, I'm speaking from ignorance as I've not used it in my practice. I am curious to see what others think... The nice thing about Nitrous is that once the drug is discontinued the effects of the drug are gone. If a medic feels they are masking something they stop letting the pt have it. I have used nitrous as its the only real pain control I have in my little bag of tricks, I find it is effective enough to be able to get the pt to the hospital were they can get the other drugs that they are able to offer. It was a part of my PCP program but I dont really think that it would take more that a few hrs to make medics understand the protocol that comes along with it. Have a happy day
  16. OK I have been watching this thread and I was going to leave it alone but I just cant. Annie thanks for putting it back into perspective. JP through out this whole thing you have hidden behind the Freedom of Speech and the legal system. What ever happened to respect of others, and the morals of the societies in this day and age. These people disrespected an honor that our society has bestowed our fallen military personel. When it comes down to it, it was wrong no matter how you look at and buy the way you defend this crap I have to say you have placed yourself at the level. I truely believe that if I am a good person that is kind, and honest I will make a difference in this world. It may not be an earth shaking difference but a differnce I will make. I raise my boys to think the same way, I dont care if your a ditchdigger all your life as long as you are a GOOD person that is all that matter. Really JP look back at what you are defending.........................
  17. Ok I did the vote before I responded and I have to say I'm probably not the norm. I think pain controll is very important in pt care, but I dont nessacaraly think it has to be all the narcotic drugs. The only protocol in pain I have is 02(nitro in cardiac), nitrous oxide and a teddy bear. I think demographics are very important also as most of my calls are no more than 1/2 hr away. I have two stories of pain 17yr old male dirt biking on the beach hits a rock funny and breaks his femur. I get there 10 mins after and start my protocols. I have all my great fireman to help me. We start by stableizing the break with blankets and zap straps (i luv those straps) in position found he had good peddles. He was screaming but once he felt snug like a bug in a rug he lighten up. I gave him entonox as we were doing this and for the bumpy transfer off the beach (again i luv ff), my partner (freaked)was able to drive slow to the hospital which was 3 min away but we took about 10. Now if this had happened out the road at a different beach I would luv the ability to give other drugs. Now the teddy bear you might ask, many years ago I had the pleasure of learning from a pt the advantage of hugging a pillow for abdominal pain. I have no idea why this works but it does and on my shift if the pt has this pain I offer them a teddy bear to hug and to my surprise it works for them. Maybe its just the fact of hugging a bear that makes them feel better or it's some physiological aspect. Anyways thats my cent worth happy

  20. I used the example of the RCMP headress for a reason and it doesnt look like ya got it. How adherent am I to the First Nation customs am I (this is not a kettle of worms that you really want to start). I am very adherent to them and I have a great knowledge of the customs where I live. If you look at one of my posts that show my son's Haida Graduation I have pictures of the ceremony. The blanket that he was presented was made by me. Now this is not the normal custom the white mother making the blanket it is suppose to be the auntie. My son does not have Aunties to this so I asked permission of my husbands chief to make it(this is called respect)(and that was the real point of my post). I have also been given permission to learn how to weave cedar bark hats, (not many have been given this as it is a highley protected skill), I have knowledge of traditional medicines that my husband and I made when his mother had cancer. I have lived here for 25 years and some will say that I know more about the Haida way than my Husband. And so you know, I work the Council of the Haida Nation and have the culture in my life everyday. I can even speak and understand parts of the language. If I ever have a question about the culture I have many chiefs ect that would be happy to answer my questions. Not to sound crasssssss but there is my immigration card. So if your have any interest in this culture please feel free to ask as I will gladly answer your question if I dont know the answer I will find someone who does.
  21. I come from a very long line of military people, as a matter of fact my Mother just recieved an award of Excellence of Commissionars Yesterday at our local Legion. My mother and father both have made sure that I have the understanding of what Rememberance day is for and I have in Turn made sure my children have an understanding of this day. For any person, or group to burn a Poppy on this date is down right deplorable and disgusting. It should not be tolerated at all, ever. I personally think that those that participated in that protest should be shot. Tried to think of a better word but nope SHOT is the only one that comes to mind. I think we have as a society become so compliant and Politically Correct in area's that shouldn't be. For Example When you immigrate to my country I expect you to adhear to my customs. I dont care if you bring your own but dont try to change mine. This is about East Indian RCMP Officers changing the uniform in order to wear a Turbin. I dont care if you wear a turbin and I dont care why you wear one but if you want to be a RCMP officer you will wear our Headress. If I immigrated to a country that required me to keep my face hidden your dam rights I would do it. It is called respecting one's customs. I try to look at bothsides but in this case I dont want to know the other side all I see is a group of people disrespecting a countries custom and in this case it is a Day of Remberance for all the people who have given up their life and greatly disrupted the lives of the families left behind. Yep I think thats enough said from me
