  1. Ok Im I guess I have to back off a bit. Your right, the other difference is that I am from a very small town and this is a city atmoshpere and there is a very big difference that also needs to be regognised. The comment "and they were on break" just chokes me as that is not an excuse to not help someone in need if you have the ability to do so, even if it is just holding someones hand.
  2. Seriously?????? Do you think it was appropriate that he didnt stay and help in any manner possible even if its holding her hand. I do recall this insident when it first happened but when you read news articals you dont get the emotion out of it. Did he leave because the situation made him uncompfortable, or did he leave because he was a dick who knows right. Your comment about not haveing an ambulance, not a field employee, and was on break really to me is very disturbing because as far I am concerned its like being a cop, your a paramedic 24 hrs a day on or off shift. My husband (fire fighter) and I(paramedic) many years ago (both off duty) were the first on scene for a shed fire that a 12yr old boy burned to death in. I didn't have my ambulance and he didnt have his firetruck but we did everything possible to help the burned people that had tried to rescue the boy and to make sure the fire didnt spread to other homes. It's about your morals in the end and I couldn't imagin not staying and helping that is just WRONG.
  3. OK Squint I have to ask, what brought this topic to light. It sounds like you were asked to do some drug testing.
  4. Personally I don't agree with drug testing at all and here is one reason why? As a Bean counter also I am the Administrator of our medical benifit packages. At one time the employee's use to bring in the reciepts for reimburstment and I would send them out with my Signature on the form. All of sudden it becomes the responibility of the employee a few years ago. I called the carrier and asked why the change and it was explained to me "If there is someone that has Knowledge of medications and discovers that someone is take AIDS drugs, there is the posibility that the employee could be targeted for dismissal based on that knowledge" The only time I would agree that someone needs drug testing is if they are dead, or OD'ing and only in a hospital setting. If you suspect that someone is on drug's then it should be mentioned somewhere along the line but that is a moral obligation not a legal one.
  5. We have better beer.................
  6. http://www.wrongdiagnosis.com/symptoms/bulging_eyes/causes.htm here is some contenders. Now my question to this senerio is that if it was ICP causing the bulging eye wouldnt the pressure be enough for fluid to be comming out of the ears.
  7. Well as a Canuck I have to say I have what the US has and more. But I do have to say that the US is a very proud nation and when they need to come together they do, even if they don't always agree on the purpose, and they think we have an accent
  8. For one thing as someone who lives by the ocean actually about 500 from the ocean, is all my boys went to swimming lessons from the time they were babies. Next your communities need to post the rip tide area's. We have a few here posted and not posted, but when im on the beach and see people near the rip places not posted I tell them. Fire is right you cant fix stupid and people will always go where they shouldnt, and maybe they should extend the lifeguard time later than 6 pm to darkness after that really who should be swimming.
  9. So my day job is a bean counter. We use a program called Paydirt. This is a Canadian program that interfaces with my main program Adagio. http://www.qlabsystems.com/ They may have an american version or maybe able to stear you in the right place. Spread Sheet are great but unless you have good knowledge of how they work you may become frustrated. Also on our canadian revenue agencey site there is a little program that you can download my friend who has a small bussiness uses it. Maybe your government has the same sort of thing. good luck
  10. The reason that I answered the OP is the fact that it was an aircraft of some sort. Normally these pts are transported by ground, but I live on an island and there fore have a bit of knowledege on the transportaion of pt that are flying around. In a heli the pt is next to a door. These doors are designed to be able to open very easily because if they have to have an emergency landing it is easy to get out. Now with this being said it would be very easy for a pt to open that door and boom there is an issue. If the pt is suicidal they can jump ect ect ect. Putting restraints on pts is a last resort because it is one more thing to have to deal with is there is an emergency landing. People with mental illness should have all the rights as other pts but when your leaving here and you have been violent or suicidal you dont leave unless you are sedated and that is just the way it is. There isnt even room in a medivac plane for Zap Straps can you imagin having to restrain at pt in there if they freak.
  11. Here we sedate them no questions. I have actually refused a pt and had to explain to the dr why. He was very willing to give the drugs once he realized how easy it could be for a pt to freak in a heli or a plane and make them crash or hurt the medics on board. The most extreme Mentally ill pt was 17 yrs old, was drugged at a party and has had pycosis ever since (very sad really). It took 3 days to get her sedated to the point where she would be accepted by the ALS crew. In our little world all the pt can do with pain stimulas is moan and they are good to go. I truely belive Anne that you should never take another pt like that on a plane as there will be one look or gesture that you or partner do that will set off your very nice pt and then your in the deepest shit possible. You may want to talk to your provider and the hospitals and have a mutual agreement with them as it is nice to walk in have a 1/2 sedated pt they give the rest and off you go, quick and easy.
  12. Yes it was the end of my work day and i found this enjoy http://www.strangenewproducts.com/
  13. Good post for the newbies, but I would like to add to all the old folk here remember you were new once and your response to a newbie can make or break them. After 15 years of being on this job I can honestly say that I learn something new each and everyday and its normally from the old ones, and yes even with all the years on the job I still consider myself a newbie.
  14. God I luv lego men
  15. OK why do all of the mug shots look like the women are trailer trash and really how could the husband think a wriggling paint brush under a pillow is a baby kicking http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/37899934/ns/us_news/
  16. Congradulations. You should do exactly what you both want on your wedding day. Traditionally it was the brides day but i dont think that is the way so much anymore. you could use disposable pee pots for bowls and the french fry trays for plates. you could also since cops are also first responders get crime tape and use that insead of creap paper.
  17. Well I was invited to do an Emergency Maternity course at our local hospital. Our hospital is not desiginated for labour and delivery so everyone either goes down island or they go off island. In this course we learned alot of the nursing stuff as it really wasnt geared to the paramedic side of the issue, but still got alot of useful information and now I have to think How the hell will I ever transport a prolapse cord mother on her hands and knee's and hopefully my partners hand up there holding the baby in..........well if I ever come across it I will let you know how I did it. The biggest thing though is that I learned in Canada Maturnity is not a big part of School practicums like they were 30 years ago. You would think that it would be drilled many times over. As I watched the younger nurses look like deers in head lamps and the thought of full labour comming through those doors was very disturbing. Just days before they actually turned a young girl away and said to go home with out even having a Dr look at her. Now this is to me wrong on many levels but I was not there and probably may not know the whole story. So why in the world would this part of nursing not be important in our schooling as when you think about it nurses deal with life from beginning to end. just some thoughts
  18. Well come to Haida Gwaii and get a piece of beach front property. We have all the fishing, sockeye, king, coho salmon, halibut, rock cod and other good bottom feeders, the deer here are small but the tastiest in the world as they have a completely different diet, we have elk, our beaches are awesome to drive your 4x4 and other toys. the down fall to all of this though is that It would be expensive for you to get here and I think you may have to become a canadian to stay here year round http://www.haidagwaiitourism.ca/ http://www.haidagwaiitourism.ca/haida_gwaii_our_communities.htm

    My Son

As some of you know I live on Haida Gwaii formally the Queen Charlotte Islands. As in most First Nations communities the High School Graduation is low for Native children. Some communities like ours have a celebration for all of the Graduates from elementry school to university. At each of these mile stones in the kids lives they are presented with dinner and gift. These gifts are grade 7 a vest, grade 12 a blanket, and if you have not recieved one of the above by university you will recieve a blanket, this year one of the university girls requested a cedar woven hat. Also at this ceremony the child is given a Haida Name. My son has had his since he was 7 from his grand mother. His name is Haunts-Ada(not the proper spelling as you would never pronounce it) which means White Shadow, and he is of the Stastus Clan (Eagle)and his chief is Jim Hart (if you google him you will see the beautiful totem poles this man has created) Jim Hart was also an apprentice of the late Bill Reed. As you will see all of the blankets ect have very beautiful haida art sewn on them. Please note all of the different types of art through out the pictures. Traditionally the gifts are made by the childs Auntie, in my case my son has none to provide him with his blanket so it came into my hands. His blanket is made from felt, with the borders and design being Ultra-seud. His design was hand sewn onto the felt (25 hrs later) He has a satin lining inside that has his name and clan inside, this is not traditional but the artist wanted to do something different and thank god it turned out. All of the buttons on his blanket are hand sewn on and as you will see some blankets have upto 2000 buttons on them. His blanket is also in memory of his late Uncle Martin who had green eyes, hence he has an abolone button in the eye of the eagle. You also at these celebrations have to feed you guests, in my case I had to feed 24 people. We had Ham, potatoe salad and lots of snacks. I am very proud of my son and thought it would be nice to share with those that may be interested in one of our celebrations. Now he is going to go off to The Vancouver Art institute to do the Music program for producing and creation of Music. We just found out that he recieved a 2000 scholorship for a song that he created. http://s231.photobucket.com/albums/ee123/princess_happiness/Haida%20Graduation/?action=view&current=IMGP5266.jpg#!oZZ1QQcurrentZZhttp%3A%2F%2Fs231.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fee123%2Fprincess_happiness%2FHaida%2520Graduation%2F%3Faction%3Dview%26current%3DIMGP5266.jpg%26

  24. So when I read this post really I wondered what the hell is a nemo kid. I live in a small town and I'm not thinking we have any, but with cutting things off. In my community we have alot of people who do not have money to replace clothing ect. I will cut off clothing if needed. I have a frequent flyer and not once have I had to cut his cloths in 14 years. Then one day he decided sleeping in a cold place and having snow fall on him was something to exeperience I had to cut off everything to warm him up. I hated doing this but there is a time and a place for it. I'm sure that the OP didnt cut off whatever the nemo kids have on because of discrimination but because of need for medical attention.
