Education requirements didn't go far enough. The biggest mistake made was not divesting non-emergency medical transport from emergency medical services. These two fields are separate with different patient populations and different needs. Neither is more important or better than the other just as RNs, RTs, and other allied health can't be compared in terms of importance or better. Once you remove non-emergent medical transports from EMS you remove one of the big reasons for keeping the EMT-B level around.

I don't think that axial traction can describe the vast majority of trauma injuries that result in patients being back boarded. Similarly, I doubt that there are very many asymptomatic unstable fractures caused by axial traction.

Question for the original poster, was an unstable spinal fracture found in the patient or not?

Medical schools won't even see your high school transcripts. At most, AACOMAS (DO application system) requests your ACT and/or SAT scores, but even those are self reported and I doubt will have any effect. The AMCAS (MD application system) doesn't ask for it even as an option. Neither system will ask for high school transcripts and no school will want them unless you're applying for a dual BS/[MD or DO] program.

Dr. Bledsoe, I'm curious on what your opinion of shows like House or Grays Anatomy is? The reason I ask is because I feel that a good amount of EMS providers tend to over react to fictional TV shows and the result often puts EMS in a worse light than the show itself. For example, the numerous responses on the NBC message board covering Trauma have been embarrassing at best. Now I will grant that the I have only seen the second episode which might have been much better than the pilot, even if both were chock full of errors. I also remember that a lot of TV shows start off low and slowly build up (as I've mentioned elsewhere, Battlestar Galactica and Stargate both were terrible for their first few episodes). While I can't say that I've become a fan of Trauma, I haven't necessarily written it off yet.

Unless the bag is collapsing, the only difference between 10 L/M and 15 L/M is going to be how fast you drain your oxygen tank.

The drama is, but I'm kinda of a trash TV junkie (I love White Trash TV... err, I meant Cops). That said, Ice Road Truckers belongs more on Discovery than History.

To be fair, there's a good amount of history in Pawn Stars. Much more so, and thus more fitting on the History Channel, than Ice Road Truckers.

I'll chock timing up to artistic license. I thought it worked well were it was placed and that it would have been awkward if they pulled 5 seconds at the end for Nancy (who we really didn't see with the newbie after she rode with the patient) admonishing him for 'moral triage' (on that note, I did enjoy the 'medical triage, not moral' line) to run through that lesson. Personally, I'd rather have them stop dictating their triage into the radio in real time for the simple reason that it doesn't add anything and is blatantly false.

Dust, I think what Trauma is trying to do is just turn a helicopter into another transport device. Basically a flying ambulance that takes calls just like every other ambulance.

You mean especially considering that it seemed like there was absolutely no care administered during transport? On the other hand, I'll give credit to NBC for not going after the obvious incident that I think most people believed was coming with the build up to that call.

You absolutely, without a doubt, can not compare talking (either via radio or cell phone) to texting.

To be fair, she graduated from medical school, but apparently has not completed internship/residency. It's like having someone finish paramedic school and not take the paramedic exam deciding instead to work as a basic. How would you feel if your partner decided to go to school and not use the education? I'll admit that I haven't seen the pilot yet, but I didn't think that this episode was terrible. Not necessarily good, but not Gigli. If it survives, it would be interesting to see how it develops. After all, Battlestar Galactica's first few episodes was nothing short of terrible (seriously, go back and watch 1.01 "33" and 1.02 "Water" and tell me those were good episodes. Alternatively, go back and watch the first few episodes of Heroes.). There were a few things that I felt Trauma 1.02 hit on the head. The 'eating of the young' for new grads in EMS. Marriage troubles. Dangers of the job (and what I'm deeming the world's worst example of stagging for police). ER antics. EMTs hitting on nurses. Of course there were also numerous medical mistakes and stupidity.

I actually looked up the SF EMSA protocol to respond to someone from New Jersey who claimed that there was a "white tag" (no treatment needed). This confirmed my assumption that SF EMSA uses the Simple Triage And Rapid Treatment (START, which, incidentally, was developed in Orange County. CA) system for MCI triage.
